(Anonymous) 2011-09-18 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)I read from the front page of the newspaper at age 4. I devoured ASOIAF in about... a month or less (I once read 6 300+ books in a week). I have yet to read beyond the prologue of ADWD. It's boring and dull, and if what I've read on the internet is true, than I'm out - I'll just read book summaries online and go back to GOOD literature - Garth Nix, Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman, Tamora Pierce and Eoin Colfer spring to mind.
I got tired of ASOIAF around the third book. I couldn't put up with Bran's eternal mopiness and sullen behaviour, Jon's sudden "holier than thou" idiocy, and the rapid multiplication of POV characters. I only really care about what happens to Arya, Sansa, Littlefinger, Jorah and Rickon, at any rate.
What annoys me is that GRRM INSISTS that all the bad reviews on Amazon come from haters and trolls, and actually asked Amazon to remove them.
As to what I hear of the actual book - Dany is still a Mary Sue. As someone on a fansite put it:
"To me, the ultimate definition of a Mary Sue is when the author doesn't "get" how readers could dislike a character, and I just imagine Martin saying, "How can you not like Dany? She's smoking hot, a descendent of an exotic race with silver hair and purple eyes. She has hawt lesbian sex. She's the rightful queen. She's fiercely determined. She grew up without any family besides her brother. She suffered abuse at the hands of that brother, then was forced to marry a barbarian. She not only endured this, she came to embrace it. She tragically lost her unborn son. She's compassionate toward the downtrodden. She saved the cast-off Dothraki, freed slaves, and conquered Meereen...all at age 15. She's like her brother Rhaegar. She has the totally awesome Barristan the Bold with her. Meanwhile the Seven Kingdoms are being tragically mismanaged and are about to be invaded by the Others, and she's the only hope for saving them. And, oh yeah, she has three badass dragons that she uses to burn people to a crisp at her command. Seriously...how can you not like her!!11"
