I love the books, but I have to admit I agree with you. Are all those characters so important that we need to know EVERYTHING about them? I don't mind if a book is long, really, but I just can't care about fifty characters.

[identity profile] foxhound.livejournal.com 2011-09-18 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel this way sometimes, too. Particularly in Bran's chapters, although they have been considerably more interesting lately.

[identity profile] fauxkaren.livejournal.com 2011-09-18 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
IA. ADWD could have used some major editing. It feels like the whole Meeren storyline has spirals out of control.

And GRRM's prose is really not that great either.

But the books are still addicting.

[identity profile] lls-mutant.livejournal.com 2011-09-18 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Someone told me that if you added up all the descriptions of food alone in the 5 books, it came out to 100 pages. Not to mention bodily functions, histories of buildings, and the eight names each minor character is known as. I really like the story, but I think there's a lot of world-building stuff that could be trimmed out.

[identity profile] frozenish.livejournal.com 2011-09-18 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Ditto this. I love the show but found the books close to unreadable. And then I loled when I found out Martin is one of those authors who thinks his canon is above fanfic. Oh, give me a break.

I think this is along the lines of my major gripe with the series thus far (I'm only partway through the first book, and I've never seen the show, so bear with me in my newness to the series).

I understand why GRRM uses the constantly shifting POVs because it conveys the intrigue stuff rather well in that it tends to keep up the suspense, but at this point there are so many characters (and so few of them interesting) that it's hard for me to care a lot of the time. I'm assuming that as the series moves on, even more characters will be added to this mess, and I'm interested enough in how the twisted knot of intrigue plays out to keep going, but I'll admit that it sometimes feels like a chore to pick up the book when I'm interested in a storyline or character only to have him jump away to someone else at the last minute.

You're probably illiterate. Go read some more Twilight.

Real literature is obviously not your forte, you jumentous fuckface.

That was my feeling too! I'm looking forward to the series thinning down the books a bit, and I think that's one of the things the series does really well.

[identity profile] silver-stars-22.livejournal.com 2011-09-18 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly GRRM's prose leaves a lot to be desired and yes he could have used a better editor. However he is an amazing storyteller and he writes really interesting, well fleshed, multidimensional characters which is mostly why I love the books so much.

And I'm with you on the Iron Islands. I zoned out when it came to that storyline both times I read the books. Dorne is flawless though :P

[identity profile] dangerousdame.livejournal.com 2011-09-18 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I think GRRM would have done well to take the Terry Pratchett route and written several inter-connected series instead of one huge one.

Eh, I think it's more a case of to each his/her own. I tolerate the many pointless wandering of Brienne because she is my favorite character in the series. Tyrion, I am less enchanted with than most readers; his chapters in ADWD draged for me. I am not a fan of the Iron Island folks either, but I learned long ago with Martin that seemingly unimportant stuff always ends up being Holy Cats! later. Plus the boring chapters seem to be the breeding ground for "clues" for fan theories: the Starks = The Seven, is Ramsey's letter legit, etc.

One of many, many reasons he needs a fucking editor.

i'm so glad neddard died

[identity profile] nadinthedreamer.livejournal.com 2011-09-18 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Can't help but agree with you. Currently reading 'A Clash of Kings' and boy is is loooong!

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2011-09-18 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I think this is a pretty common sentiment among people who've finished ADWD - it's also one shared by many of the professionals who reviewed it.

He's starting to pull a Jordan. He could've cut half of the viewpoint characters in that book, easily.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-18 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I loved the books. There are a lot of characters, but I enjoy watching them progress and see how the various intrigues guide their lives.

No one lives in a vacuum they have family, friends, acquaintances. Theon may not seem integral to the story now, but he was part of the Stark family and we follow his story to see not only to see what he does, but what his family does in the power struggles.

Did some character chapters need editing and tightening? Yes. Does he have some prose issues. I agree there as well. Need to trim out some characters? Or cut down description? No. If he'd spent less time describing his world and its varied cultures it wouldn't have felt so rich and real to me. This is high fantasy, that's part of the genre, long epic struggles, complicated character arcs, multiple povs, war and so on.

It's the luxury of fanfiction to be able to skip a lot of wholesale description, because it's instinctive to assume your reader knows the original canon and can fill in those details for you.

[identity profile] sistermagpie.livejournal.com 2011-09-18 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, I think that's part of what makes it what it is. It's one of those books where you're basically submerging yourself in it whenever you read it rather than moving along towards the destination. There's not that many books out there doing what he's doing, so it's part of what makes him different. I find the chapters are short enough that even when I'm in a storyline I don't like as much I don't feel like I'm stuck there forever.

LOL, yeah, that's what my friends say, too. That there are whole story arcs that ultimately amount to nothing -- nothing learned, nothing changed, the character goes off and does things that ultimately make no difference and then die.

I haven't read the books (well, I got most of the way through the first before I realized I'd moved from skimming to skipping whole sections to follow only the three characters that appealed to me, and yeah, that struck me as not a good sign. Then I put it down and didn't pick it up. I do enjoy the HBO version though. It seems more to the point.

I haven't read all of the published books yet. I'm only on the first one, and it's taking me FOREVER because the pacing is so goddamn slow. It's good, and I think the story and characters are really great, but ffs. I really hope the rest aren't this slow, otherwise it's going to take me years to read them all.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-18 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
IA, but I personally think that now that all the setup from the last two books is done he'll get his ass in gear. Maybe that's wishful thinking.

Also, Asha and Theon are the only people from the Iron Islands I will ever give a damn about.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-18 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Winter is coming - since 1996. I am a fan of the books, but i think he needs to start get the story moving, we still barely know nothing about the creatures beyond the wall. Barely anything of interest happened in ADWD, and that was a 1000 page book. He needs an editor that will actually say no to him, do we really need all that Iron Islands stuff? And please for the love of God let the Starks make the most epic of epic comebacks, otherwise GRRM you are just a sadist for all the shit you have put them through.

[identity profile] quorothorn.livejournal.com 2011-09-19 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
The thing is, I kind of like reading all those wanderings (albeit some more than others). It's not for everyone, to be sure, but ASoIaF (and also WoT) appeals to me in large part because I can just spend hundreds and hundreds of pages in that world with those characters. There aren't that many series that provide that sort of extremely involved 'sprawl'.
