this. thank you.

people assume that just because you don't like a gay character your homophobic.

[identity profile] dgcatanisiri.livejournal.com 2011-09-18 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Or, if you're gay, that it's internalized homophobia and you really aren't accepting of who you are, no matter what you say.

Exactly. The worst part is that at times, I feel like Murphy is using Kurt to basically slap the audience across the face with 'if you're gay, you're supposed to be like this.' And to me, that is just as offensive a form of bullying as the physical violence that Karofsky is responsible for.

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-09-18 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm, honestly, I don't think he is. I think anyone is free to dislike whoever, but it you look at the very first season, they're all archetypes at best, stereotypes at worst.

-Kurt - effeminate gay kid
-Finn - the dumb jock
-Mercedes - sassy black girl
-Quinn- the pretty popular girl
-Rachel - ugly duckling with talent
etc

I mean, we've seen this before, pretty much everywhere. I think as the show got bigger that expected, and more character development was needed, it started showing it's issues. You see some attempts, but they tend to sometimes make things worse. I don't think he's pushing an agenda, I think the characters were stereotypey to begin with.

Idk, man, I know some gay guys A LOT like Kurt. Maybe not exactly like him, but they act a lot like Kurt. Not all gay guys are like Kurt, yeah, but then you have Blaine and Karofsky.

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-09-18 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
True, as do I, to be fair. I also know a lot of them not like him, though. I can see it from both sides. I understand the frustration of only being represented in one particular way (one subsection of your group), but I also see a lot of irrational hate towards effeminate males, even within the LBGT community.

[identity profile] writerserenyty.livejournal.com 2011-09-18 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Right, and I know other people who are gay and Kurt's opposite(one guy who's even named Kurt). I've just seen a lot of hate towards Kurt because he's "not realistic", which makes me go "weeeeelll...."

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-09-18 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
It's funny how you associate names with people. I also know a Kurt who is pretty much exactly everything that Glee's Kurt isn't.

I think the problem, as usual, is that because there is not so much representation, every character that is gay gets bombarded into an exemplar function. And that's where the complaining about stereotypes comes from, essentially. If every show had three gay characters, then there would be much less riding on the ones in the spotlight.

[identity profile] dgcatanisiri.livejournal.com 2011-09-19 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
That I definitely agree with. I've said it before that if the representation available wasn't so limited, Kurt's character wouldn't bother me as much.

Of course, the few shows I've found that aren't giving stereotyped characters turn these characters into just 'the gay character,' the one who's only pulled out when they want to tell a 'gay person's story' - the various struggles of coming out or finding a relationship. The examples that come to mind are Riley on Degrassi, who had a major storyline about coming out to the school in the first half of season ten and then only appeared in one two-parter in the second half about him trying and failing to come out to his mother, while his friends got several other stories, or Teddy of 90210 getting relegating to subplots throughout his coming out struggles. Both of these are happening in the middle of other 'issue' oriented plots, like parents getting divorced or sexts, lies, and video or friendships and betrayals... No, they're only relegated to 'the gay plot.' Sure, there's drama there, but there's other drama that DOESN'T hinge on their sexuality that is generally ignored.

Sorry for the rant, this is something of my soapbox activism topic.

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-09-19 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, I get it. I personally like Kurt, but I also know how people make assumptions, and how that quickly can grow into "every gay guy likes fashion and makes campy hand movements." And I get how that sucks if you're not like that.

Then again, I also get how people are suspicious if people are hating on Kurt very much. I think that that has to do with the fact feminine, and in extension effeminate behavior is, often by definition considered negative.

I actually have a long-time gay friend who recently said he'd like to put all effeminate guys on an island a bomb it. Now, the boy does have a history of expressing himself with hyperboles, but the sentiment is very real. .And he is not the only one I've seen it in (albeit, more politely phrased). It's a sort of glorification of "manly man" characteristics, that I do sort of find problematic (even when dealing with straight men, for the record).

I'm not saying you do that, specifically - for the record. Though I have seen it on occasion with some Kurt haters. And now I'm ranting, heh!

[identity profile] writerserenyty.livejournal.com 2011-09-19 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
Right, and the representation thing is definitely an issue. The thing that I think is great about Kurt is that he isn't just shoved off in the gay best friend role, and that he's a main character in his own right (Emmy nominations be damned). But yeah, I definitely see where you're coming from, because Kurt is the one in the spotlight as a gay character on television.

I guess I just want to get to the point where it's not so much "is this character a good LGBT character" and to the point where it's "Is this a good character?" However, it's not even at that point for women characters (all those times that people clamor for strong female character) so it's a long road for LGBT representation in media.

As a gay man that works in a queer youth group; your experience is not even remotely universal. Almost every single queer guy I've met thinks Glee does a wonderful job and loves the character and I meet a LOT of gay kids.
