I'm kinda sick of people whining about the "boring camping parts" in DH. Lets recap: we had the seven potters, the Ministry chase, the locket + silver doe, Godric's Hollow, the Lovegood residence, Malfoy Manor, Gringotts, and then Hogwarts. How is that just simply camping? How is that boring?

The Ministry bit was the most amazing thing of the lot, followed shortly by the Lovegood residence (because of the inherent creepiness of Luna's empty room and the desperation of her father).

I'm not so hot on the Snatcher/Malfoy bit or Godric's Hollow, which I found kind of boring, and I just found Gringotts to be really unpleasant and not very memorable besides burning hot multiplying gold. The Hogwarts battle only made me think, Oh, Rowling, you are NOT very good at writing battle sequences.... :\

There was a lot of cabin fever for a painfully long time, a lot of stupid decisions on a lot of characters' parts, and a lot of fights over nothing because of the One Ring- oh wait I mean the evil Locket of Hufflepuff. The boringness of camping the most lasting thing I remember. I'm glad you enjoyed it, but that doesn't mean everyone is going to.

I think what bothered people is not the lack of plot points during the camping scenes but the way they were executed. Harry and Co. sat around moping and reading newspapers for days on end, then would either be hit with a convenient flash of inspiration ('Let's go visit Godric's Hollow even though I've never shown much interest before!'), do something stupid (getting captured through carelessness) or the plot points would come to them (silver doe). It was boring because they weren't using their initiative, they were just reacting to things which appeared to come out of nowhere.

This.

But didn't they kinda go through that same sort of stupidity at Hogwarts?

[identity profile] rattyrayvn.livejournal.com 2011-09-19 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
To some extent, yes - they're kids, sometimes things have to fall into their laps for the plot to happen. But in the earlier books, they tended to find things out while sneaking around Hogwarts at night, or following up on a red herring, both of which make for more interesting reading than lamenting their lack of decent food.

Yes, but in the later books, they fell into the same reckless, convenient pattern. In HBP, for example, Harry just roamed around until he found plot points. I didn't think his actions then made any more sense than they did when he was camping.

This. All stated could have been written very well but instead they were executed poorly. If the reader comes to the part where Neville recaps what happened and would have rather heard that story, then you executed your main story badly.

It's even worse on film. Nobody wants to watch a camping trip where people bricker and read newspapers. You know, they could have down what they did in Two Towers. Splice the boring golden trio camping bits with the building up of the final battle. It would have added more to the story and to the secondary characters.

THIS IS A GOOD PLOT FIX AND SHOULD HAVE HAPPENED.
