She was booted because she was running the project into the ground. They had a deadline, and she was not meeting those deadlines, and she was blowing money out the wazoo on the project because of it. The project became so personal to her that she lost sight of it from a business point of view. They could not afford to keep doing that, so they booted her. Yes, I'm sure it was sad for her, but she did have a job to do, and she wasn't doing it.

It would be stupid of them to keep a woman on board because she's a woman, even when she's not doing her job. Her removal isn't a blow to the movie's credibility at all, and it's not the first time they've removed a director from a project (and Lasseter has also done the same thing at Disney animation, on Bolt with a male director). The animation industry is male dominated, this is certainly true (well Hollywood period is), but there's absolutely zero evidence for any sexism regarding Brenda Chapman, so lay off. Not you, of course, but the critics.

If it makes the naysayers feel any better, Brave is being produced by a women and both of the writers for the film are women. The director, is in fact, the only major male staff on the film.
