Did I miss the episode where she sexually assaulted Spike or... >_>

Gone? or Dead Things, I think...

She didn't sexually assault, but she used him for sex for most of season 6. I don't necessarily agree that a stern rapin' would have set her straight or anything, but she did treat him pretty abominably, manipulating his obsessive love for her into a way to feel alive/get her rocks off. The whole business made me uncomfortable, not only for the huge squick factor, but because Spike's attempted rape seemed a cheap way to sway the fans in Buffy's favor. It doesn't matter that she sucked Spike dry and spat him out [it's firmly established that she knows what she's doing is wrong], because in the end, he tried to rape her. It was just a really fucked up decision on Joss's part. Yeah, Spike was a soulless monster at the core, but Buffy has never treated the men in her life particularly well, in my opinion.

REGARDLESS. Rape =/= the answer.

And there's a definite difference in manipulating/using someone for those purposes and forcing yourself on someone who clearly doesn't want it / is terrified.

Spike also knew that Buffy was using him, and yet continued to let her. I am not saying that she treated him (or other guys) particularly well, but nothing warrants rape...

In fairness, Iirc, there is one point where he does say no and she ignores it - plus he couldn't exactly fight her off if/when she ignored it because of the chip in his head.

Re: N!S

[identity profile] captain-loki.livejournal.com 2011-09-20 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
I don't recall him saying no..at least not in the same way that she was saying no to him in that scene.

However, I don't agree that he couldn't stop her because of the chip. For one thing, if he really *didn't* want it, he would probably get over the pain...considering self preservation tops headache.

And, if she was trying to rape him, and he forced her away, I don't think the chip would actually have hurt him. He even says himself there has to be intent to harm behind his actions, if he wasn't trying to actually hurt her, but just stop her from hurting him...but that is my speculation and probably wrong *shrugs*

(Anonymous) 2011-09-20 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
I agree something should have happened to teach her that treating people like that is bad I'm...not really sure I agree that rape would have been a good way to go about that. : /

NF

I have someone like that, kind of. Only real difference is, the reason she scares me is because she...ah. Took exception to me before [we used to be friends] and completely ran me out of that fandom. SO.

Ok, Buffy was an absolute bitch to Spike yes, but seriously now. Rape is not an educational tool.

NF

Should this belong under the personal attack header?

Re: NF

(Anonymous) 2011-09-20 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
Idk. I mean they aren't really *attacking* them since they're just saying they're creepyed out...plus there isn't a name and [presumably anyways] more than one person could have that icon.

Re: NF

(Anonymous) 2011-09-20 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
I sort of think so. I can pretty easily guess who this is, just from the icon and length of the blurred out part, and I imagine anyone in one of those fandoms can too.

(I don't agree with the secret btw)

Honestly part of the reason that scene always confused me was because I didn't think Spike was going to rape her. He was initiating the way they always initiated, and I know she said no, but she had said no before, and Spike had said no before and she ignored it (reasons to have a safe word?)

But Buffy did not deserve to be raped, regardless of how shitty she was to him. Rape doesn't teach anyone anything and no one should ever be raped.

[identity profile] oflittlebrain.livejournal.com 2011-09-20 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
seriously? if someone tells you that no one deserves to be raped then that makes them the PC police?

if so i am the PC police and very proud of it :/

yep, all them wimminz just need a good hard dicking against their will in order to show them their place, don'cha know.

...are you for real?

Good lord, not this again.

NS

I just find it hilarious that he tried to murder her, had murdered thousands, but that's all water under the bridge after he gets a chip and spends a couple weeks chained to a bathtub.
I also expected her to brush it off more easily then she did. She had way more serious shit happening to her over the course of the show. What's one more vampire assault? Cheap was what that plot was. And of course the only purpose of it was to make HIM get character development. Bah, I say.

I always saw it quite differently. To me the reason they started "bonding" was before he was the only one who knew she was dragged out of heaven and brought back, initially. And it gives Buffy relief to just confide in someone who is basically neutral. I don't think Buffy ever forgets who and what he is, this is why she feels justified to treat him like crap.

I also expected her to brush is off more easily, but then, I can understand in a way - as she was basically repeating the Angel pattern again.

You are... just special - and I mean in a snowflake way. Because it's just hugely ironic for you to be trying to take the moral high ground with a statement like that.

You know what? For what it's worth, I agree that Buffy treated Spike like shit. Yes, she sexually harassed and assaulted and emotionally and physically abused him for the whole of season 6. What she did was horrific and wrong and not acceptable at all.

But to imply that rape would 'teach her a lesson' is just.... well, ridiculous is the mildest word I can come up with. Because, you know, maybe, just maybe, the best way to tackle sexual assault is NOT more sexual assault!!

The trivialisation of male rape is actually hugely misogynistic and should justifiably be called out, but the point of this whole argument has just sailed over your head - the best way to tackle it is not to say 'women who do it should be raped as comeuppance'.

I'm boggled by your lack of logic and disgusted by your misogyny. Congratulations.
