Did I miss the episode where she sexually assaulted Spike or... >_>

Gone? or Dead Things, I think...

She didn't sexually assault, but she used him for sex for most of season 6. I don't necessarily agree that a stern rapin' would have set her straight or anything, but she did treat him pretty abominably, manipulating his obsessive love for her into a way to feel alive/get her rocks off. The whole business made me uncomfortable, not only for the huge squick factor, but because Spike's attempted rape seemed a cheap way to sway the fans in Buffy's favor. It doesn't matter that she sucked Spike dry and spat him out [it's firmly established that she knows what she's doing is wrong], because in the end, he tried to rape her. It was just a really fucked up decision on Joss's part. Yeah, Spike was a soulless monster at the core, but Buffy has never treated the men in her life particularly well, in my opinion.

REGARDLESS. Rape =/= the answer.

And there's a definite difference in manipulating/using someone for those purposes and forcing yourself on someone who clearly doesn't want it / is terrified.

Spike also knew that Buffy was using him, and yet continued to let her. I am not saying that she treated him (or other guys) particularly well, but nothing warrants rape...

In fairness, Iirc, there is one point where he does say no and she ignores it - plus he couldn't exactly fight her off if/when she ignored it because of the chip in his head.

I don't recall him saying no..at least not in the same way that she was saying no to him in that scene.

However, I don't agree that he couldn't stop her because of the chip. For one thing, if he really *didn't* want it, he would probably get over the pain...considering self preservation tops headache.

And, if she was trying to rape him, and he forced her away, I don't think the chip would actually have hurt him. He even says himself there has to be intent to harm behind his actions, if he wasn't trying to actually hurt her, but just stop her from hurting him...but that is my speculation and probably wrong *shrugs*

I think these secrets keep popping up because the fandom did rage(and still rages) about how awful Spike was.And yes, he was pretty awful to her in that scene, but he also *stopped himself and was disgusted enough to go and get his soul back*.

While Buffy, who was supposed to be the best of the good guys, pretty much did treat him like crap and didn't really get called on it.

While people were mad about "troll" Whedon for putting in the attempted rape scene, I can totally see why he would. It was a destructive relationship from get-go and I thought the escalation had been a long time coming.

As for Spike being able to stop her: he probably would be able to, physically, but psychologically he might not. The same argument could have been made for him assaulting Buffy. Buffy is fucking *strong* - she could have snapped him in two. Why didn't she? I'd wager because in (mutual) abuse there is also a very strong psychological factor.

In the scene she'd been hit by a car or something recently, so wasn't at full capacity. During the first half of the scene she was hobbling around the bathroom wincing if I recall correctly.

It's been a while, so forgive me. The point I was trying to make is that often abuse is as much a psychological thing as it is a physical one. And I believe that Buffy definitely was psychologically abusive.

That does not make Spike's actions right - but it seems, years down the line, that one scene is all that is remembered, and the mutually exploitative relationship that has gone before it for many episodes seems easily forgotten. And I feel that one scene is very much the cumulation of that relationship.

He tells her to leave because he's mad at her for fondling him (invisibly) while he's talking to Xander. And that she's only willing to be with him when she's not there. She ignores him then tries to give him a blow job.
Scene cut to her walking down the road, saying she can't believe he threw her out.
