How is this a secret? I can pinpoint who you are.

Anyway, you can draw fan art, review other people's fic, fansub, fandub, scanlate, translate, mod communities, forums and groups... there is so much to do out there (besides posting secrets).

(Anonymous) 2011-09-25 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I can too. It's in the weblink above.

"I want to be a part of fandom but I just want to use my own original stories and characters."

Um.... that's kind of the opposite of what fandom is. .___.;;;;

(Anonymous) 2011-09-25 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
There are tons of different ways to participate in fandom, many of which a commenter above listed already. If you feel fandom isn't for you, okay! You don't have to participate if you don't want to. You can enjoy it by yourself if that's how you roll. But don't give up on fandom just because your first approaches failed. Fandom is about sharing your love for a media. Maybe what you like is the workings of that universe, rather than the plot and characters. There are discussions and enthusiastic people for that too. Maybe not as much as the ones for the characters, but they exist.

That picture is very pretty. Could you share the source url with us?

idk I write fanfic and nobody reads or comments, I've not had The Amazing Fandom Experience because of it

I think it's more if you do not RP these days you can't fandom, sry2say

News to me. I've never RPed, and always felt very welcomed in fandom.

Same here.

LoL! I need to put this over my computer!

(Anonymous) 2011-09-25 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Well... sorta. I mean, he did descend into the depths of alcoholism and his writing disintegrated into self-parody, but sure, if you consider that "things turning out all right" than Hemingway's life was a-okay.

I don't think the problem here is so much you not wanting to write fanfic, but rather you "want to use your own characters/worlds" which is pretty much the opposite of what fandom is about.

However, if you still want to give it a shot, you can write fanart, do translations, start up fanwork events, and post topics for discussions. Especially in the fandom you have in your picture, the theories and discussions floating around are great!

(Anonymous) 2011-09-25 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
This is most likely the reason. The biggest squees in fandom are given over the characters. If op isn't writing about the characters, there won't be many people interested in reading their works.

[identity profile] alliterations.livejournal.com 2011-09-25 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, that's what fandom is. It's the characters and the plot and the relationships between the characters. Original work is a great, awesome thing, but fandom, and by extension fanart, fanfic, and the like, is entirely centered upon discussing characters and plot devices that are the creation of someone else.

So it's not so much what gets the most buzz here, it's the fact that OP doesn't seem interested in things that aren't their own creation. Which is cool, but then fandom might not be the best place for all that :|a

(Anonymous) 2011-09-25 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
um...I don't do the smut thing either, and I'm still involved in fandom?

(Anonymous) 2011-09-25 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
You don't have to RP smut. I mean, there are people who join sex games that don't RP smut, ffs.

[identity profile] flutingfrenzy.livejournal.com 2011-09-26 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
(For the record, I'm reading "I prefer to write my own characters and worlds" as "if I'm going to write, I'd rather write original fic than fanfic" instead of "I want to write fanfic that doesn't use any elements of the source material.")

I don't write fanfic either, but I participate in fandom just fine. Mostly I talk about canon, make dumb manips, comment on other people's fanworks and lj posts, and participate in fandomsecrets. I'm not "somebody," but I'm not really trying to be. As for RPing, I don't think any of my friends who RP do sex. I know for a fact that some of them don't.

[identity profile] bickazer.livejournal.com 2011-09-26 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, you're just like me, OP. That's why I'm not more involved in fandom either. Playing in my own sandbox is more fun than messing around in someone else's, I've found.

You could just do as I do and watch fandom, I guess...? IDK, it's amusing to lurk and follow and watch the wank as it unfolds without being involved in it at all. Maybe that's just me.

[identity profile] lashiec.livejournal.com 2011-09-26 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
This is eeeexactly how I work as well.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-26 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
You don't have to do anything, you can just talk about stuff with people. Why are you so concerned with being 'somebody' in fandom anyway?

[identity profile] theprincesslime.livejournal.com 2011-09-26 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
omg Pandora Hearts. omg Alice fanart. <3 aaaah. *uses Alice icon*

Well, original characters kind of defeats the purpose of fandom (unless we're talking vast universes like Pokemon, harry Potter etc). I totally love RPing squishy stuff though, with in-series characters.

But the fandom is small and thereby cliquey I guess, at least on here. So i get you.

[identity profile] castorochiaro.livejournal.com 2011-09-26 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
See, I keep finding these "I don't write fanfic in fandom, therefore I am irrelevant" type secrets and they continue to confuse me. I've not consistently written fanfics in YEARS. Maybe every now and again if I'm in the mood, but for the most part I just don't enjoy fics quite as much anymore. I'm not quite sure where the idea that they were a necessary part of fandom contribution even came from.

I hope you find other ways to contribute, that make you happy. At the end of the day, as much srs bsns as fandom is treated as, that's what should matter: just enjoying yourself and having a good time, hopefully with some friends or friendly people that share that interest with you.

Also I was not aware smut was a verb. Huh.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-26 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
You know, you don't *have* to smut. I haven't smutted in....god...over a year - if not longer - and I still rp pretty regularly. It's more just a matter of finding partners that are okay with you not wanting to smut, and won't try to pressure you into it...which, if you're up front about it when talking with them [I'm just going by 1x1 stuff] most people usually seem pretty accepting about it.

I thought there was an 'orginal fic' 'fandom', tho? I know there's NaNoWriMo and orginal fic big bang.

[identity profile] rayiroth.livejournal.com 2011-09-26 01:01 pm (UTC)(link)
NaNoWriMo is only a month away! :D
