Watch Torchwood if you identified with her. You'll get over her (she's 'the one with a life' most of the time, and not easy to get on with), but I identified with Tosh for the same reasons, and Ianto to an extent.

Just... stick to the first two series, please.

[identity profile] antiva.livejournal.com 2011-09-25 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
To be fair, just as many (if not more) people prefer season 3 (and maybe season 4, idk?), and like Gwen. I personally don't, but I like her from season 3 onwards.

It just depends on what they like, cheesy, lulzy sci-fi and monsters or political intrigue which is meant to be taken more seriously (I couldn't take it seriously all the way because, barfing tentacle monsters, but ymmv).

[identity profile] fiwen1010.livejournal.com 2011-09-25 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think one would prefer S3 and Gwen if they want a 'sitting in the dark crying over pizza' character. She's only like that in one scene in one episode, and even then... not. You can like Gwen, in which case S3 does rock, but you can't like her for the reasons the OP liked her.

It lost all its social outcast-ness and exchanged it for social outlaw-ness, which is entertaining, but not the same thing at all *sadface*

Or I could be misunderstanding the OP entirely...

[identity profile] antiva.livejournal.com 2011-09-25 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh I guess that's true. I'm always baffled when I see how many people like S1/S2 Gwen since I really loathed her character 8( I WISH I DIDN'T and I like her better in some fanfiction which I just take as my personal headcanon...

Eh, I didn't much care for S3 and I don't even want to touch S4 since it's apparently more of the S3 feel but I figured I might as well tell OP that if she didn't like S1/2 she might have more luck in liking S3 since they're so drastically different from each other.

Honestly I just think OP saw that scene, liked just that scene because it reminded them of themselves, and just didn't care about the rest of the episode. Especially since, if that was the scene where she cries over cheating on her boyfriend, it's not exactly super relatable in the 'oh I'm so lonely' sense.

[identity profile] fiwen1010.livejournal.com 2011-09-25 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with everything you said here.

The other day I decided that what they mean by 'Gwen is the one who reminds them how to be human' is 'Gwen is the one who most represents what RTD thinks of humanity'. It explains CoE, MD and Gwen.

[identity profile] antiva.livejournal.com 2011-09-25 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I really love Gwen's character, I just wish she hadn't been written as the 'perfect' person who had her heart in the right place... and then there were the other characters. It just rubbed me the wrong way from day one. Gwen, when taken apart from RTD's writing, is quite cute and makes mistakes and is a fuckup but so are the rest of the characters. And yes, her telling them all that 'at least she has a life' is like, o Gwen, but if it hadn't been written as true and OH SNAP GWEN SURE TOLD THEM I would've liked her attitude on a 'life' a lot more.

I just hated that we were meant to sympathise with her and her alone. I dunno. I think he got a handle on Gwen's character in S3 (and honestly by that time it was logical that she'd wisened up) but by that time I'd already picked my other favourites :(

Oh God I'm sorry I totally went on a Gwen rant ahahaha. I'm the person Torchwood fandom hates xD

[identity profile] fiwen1010.livejournal.com 2011-09-25 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm the person Torchwood fandom hates xD

Me too! Do you mind if I friend you?

What I dislike most about Gwen is that she was a really, really interesting character and in a really interesting position... and they wasted it by trying to make her right all the time, even when she's just met these people, knows nothing about them, and is telling them that they don't know how to be human or how to do their jobs. I just... such a waste.

[identity profile] antiva.livejournal.com 2011-09-25 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Pffthaha as long as you don't mind I hardly post anything ever, sure \o\

Agreed! I love her potential and even though she's not always right she had an interesting role to fill since everyone else in S1 pretty much just went with whatever Jack said. For a story POV, they needed a Gwen! But like you said, she was right and Torchwood was wrong, and it just came off preachy.

Especially after that whole retcon fiasco. That was the moment where I pretty much gave up on ever liking Gwen again. That, and then the show never addressing it again ever. I guess it was meant to show that she felt regret for it to make her more understandable to the viewer, but it just came across as incredibly selfish and thoughtless. :( Poor Rhys.

[identity profile] fiwen1010.livejournal.com 2011-09-25 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I've not updated in three weeks. Drowning in Big Bang stuff.

The Retcon fiasco was terrible. I think we were meant to feel sorry for her? But I have no idea why anyone would :/

[identity profile] antiva.livejournal.com 2011-09-25 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh! I wish I'd signed up for that but at the same time I really... can't write. White pages scare me. Even Clippit hates me!

I would've felt sorry for her had she admitted to the cheating without the retcon, but I guess having Rhys and Gwen be in a fight would've meant that Gwen didn't have the perfect life outside of Torchwood anymore and that could be complicating the writing...? I don't know why they wrote that and thought it would be anything less than terrible though. Who agreed to that?!

Hahaha yeah that was about as big of a mess as the writing of Owen and the alien pheromone spray in episode 1, which was meant to be like a hilarious Axe-effect commercial knock-off... and then it just became rape-y instead and sobs, Torchwood writing has always been kind of awkward and needs to be taken with a grain of salt.

[identity profile] fiwen1010.livejournal.com 2011-09-25 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I think there were too many cooks and no head chef. RTD was busy, but he still stepped in to mess with the scripts. There was so much potential in that idea, everything from the team to Torchwood itself, and they... failed. I mean, it was fun, and there were some brilliant bits (like Ianto. Everything about him), but it didn't meet its potential *sad*

[identity profile] antiva.livejournal.com 2011-09-25 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I kind of love it because of its potential, to be honest. I mean, if you have brilliant, flawless shows, you can't really... add much more to it, you know? Fanfic seems kind of pointless since canon was the only way it could go, characters are already fleshed out. With Torchwood, you can flesh out the characters, give them 'lives' (tm Gwen xD), add funky Doctor Who aliens to the plots, delve up new Torchwood stuff to mess with, make crossovers with all kinds of stuff...

Yep I'm basically admitting I love it because it's flawed and I like the fandom and fanfics. I'm pretty much a terrible fan, haha. But seriously, some fanfic in this fandom is amazing ;-;.

[identity profile] fiwen1010.livejournal.com 2011-09-25 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I swear, we are mind-twins.

I still wish the show had been better. Mostly I wish that RTD hadn't screwed us over and then laughed about it, but I can cope because of how awesome the fic is.

[identity profile] antiva.livejournal.com 2011-09-25 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I wish we could've gotten a real season 3 with some explanation of Mickey and Martha being married. That was so left up in the air in Doctor Who that it still baffles me to this day. But that's a whole other barrel of fish xD I wish Tosh (and Owen, as well, I suppose, even though he got some real focus at the end there) could've had her time to shine. Tosh was so neglected, like, worse than Ianto. wtf writers ;;

I mostly avoid reading stuff about RTD (and Moffat as well) for that very reason! It's much more fun to be a fan of something when you don't actively resent the writer, sobs.

[identity profile] fiwen1010.livejournal.com 2011-09-25 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
That would have been nice. I was never much a fan of Martha/Mickey because of the established relationship she had with Tom. She was engaged to him when we last saw her, and then she's married to Mickey and... What? I hated everything about 10's farewell apart from the Rose scene.

[identity profile] antiva.livejournal.com 2011-09-25 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Yesss. :( It just felt like, oh right, we had Martha as a companion as well, let's see, what do we do with her? Oh I know, we have Mickey as well, let's just put them together! FLAWLESS.

I mean, I think they have a lot of potential because of their lonely struggles because of the Doctor etc as well as being the one the Doctor pretty much ignored in favor of Rose, but it just felt so random. No buildup, no explanation of Tom. I mean, I've seen it done well and explained in fanfiction which is the only reason I don't actively hate that wave-off.

Yep, 10's final episodes... just... Sigh, let's just say I love 11 a lot more. I want 11 and Jack to meet so badly!

Having a "life" Is so weirrrrrrd.

OP, pizza you cry on = weepza.

[identity profile] fiwen1010.livejournal.com 2011-09-25 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Life, what is this thing? I have a chocolate Santa, why would I want a life?

And up until this conversation, I thought that your icon was from Meat.

[identity profile] 51stcenturyfox.livejournal.com 2011-09-25 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
A meatza weepza? :D

Oooh, chocolate Santa! I would like a Terry's chocolate orange right now. Yum!

[identity profile] fiwen1010.livejournal.com 2011-09-25 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
If the weather gets colder this week I might be able to smell them making them across town :D

Or that might be kit-kats. I can't remember what they make here these days. Defintiely chocolate orange some days, though. And coffee. I hate the smell of coffee hanging over my town. (Sorry Ianto)

[identity profile] 51stcenturyfox.livejournal.com 2011-09-25 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Awww, I love coffee!

I used to live in a town that cut potatoes for McDonald's fries, and GOOD GRIEF it smelled like french fry some days.

[identity profile] fiwen1010.livejournal.com 2011-09-25 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I got cows in the hometown (live ones, at the end of the street) and now I get chocolate and frying things from the take-away across the street.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-25 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
But that's your opinion of Gwen. Maybe OP will still identify with her, maybe OP won't. But don't make that call for OP. I identified with Gwen all the way through, haters gon' hate and all, and even though I think she did some really fucked up things. And I also identified with Tosh, so I don't see the need to predispose OP to your feelings on the show or the characters. As for the first two seasons, while I prefer them by far, I still loved CoE, so please settle down there.

[identity profile] caladria.livejournal.com 2011-09-25 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Anon, are you me?

(Or an alt-version/more shorthand version of me, as I sort of identify with them all at points - except Jack - but think they're all pretty fucked up.)

And dear god, when you've reached the point where you've mired yourself in an affair that's making you feel guilty, feel the need to confess then gone "shit, that was a bad idea" and ended up at a point where you've essentially got no one - and - even worse! - it's all your fault! - you're allowed to have a cry and pizza.

Or, at least, when I completely fuck my life up I tend to have a cry about it and feel awful.

[identity profile] radges.livejournal.com 2011-09-26 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Lol Children of Earth and Miracle Day are probably really the best two seasons unless your into not so srs bsns Torchwood except for like backstory in season two.
