Wait, wait, wait. So...you're saying that you think that the people who love her only love her because she's Jared's wife and the people that hate her only hate her because she's Jared's wife? Am I getting this right? ...Huh. Okay, well, here's my two cents.

I adored the character of Ruby. I thought she was a strong female character and to be quite honest, she is my favourite character of the entire series. Not everybody liked her and that's okay, but I did. But here's the thing: I preferred the Katie!Ruby. I didn't like Gen's version of Ruby at all because I didn't get the sense that it was the same character. The character was changed way too much. I have never and probably will never believe that the season three Ruby and the season four Ruby were the same character. I have spent much too much time thinking about that and coming up with batshit crazy theories. Plus, I hate how things ended up for her character. But that's not really Gen's fault. In the end, the writers and Eric chose the direction the character was going to go in. Gen just said the lines.

So no. I didn't like the character she played on Supernatural.

However, in real life? I think she's awesome. I think she is incredibly sweet and kind and genuine, and those are qualities I really respect in a person. And she doesn't deserve what she gets from some of the more...hardcore...fans. No one does. I like Gen because she is possibly one of the most adorable human beings out there. Sweet, funny, polite. All wonderful characteristics.

In summary: I don't hate her because she is Jared's wife. I merely dislike the character she played. And I don't like her because she's Jared's wife. I love her because of her wonderful personality and her genuine kindness. That is all.

My personal headcanon is that Katie!Ruby actually was being sincere in season three when she tried to help the boys. When Lilith sent Katie!Ruby back to Hell, she was replaced by a different demon - Gen!Ruby - who was loyal to Lilith and pretended to be Ruby, because she knew that Ruby already had a little of Sam's trust, and that's why she was so different in season four. We never found this out on the show because the boys never knew it. Katie!Ruby is either dead or still being tortured in Hell.

I'd kind of thought that being tortured convinced her to switch sides, but I like your idea better. It makes more sense, because they never felt like the same character.

Yeah, that's pretty much like one of my numerous headcanons too. One of my other headcanons is that the demon who took her place in season four was actually her sister and then there was this whole big thing with Crowley...

I managed to get a fic out of that one.

Ruby 2.0 will always be ''Kristy'' to me. (That was the name she used in 4.01 in the motel room scene. It kind of stuck with me, I guess.)

I remember reading an interview with Sera Gamble around this time and she said that Ruby's new 'nicer' attitude was because she decided that being snarky wasn't working, so she decided to be nice to Sam and get him on her side that way. I think Sera was responding to fans remarking that Gen's Ruby seemed like a different character than Katie's Ruby - less snarky and bitchy and more sweet to achieve her goal ;-) That's one of the reasons I always got upset with people saying Gen was so awful because she lost the snark; she was directed that way and that was how the character was supposed to be when she took over. I think she's a very nice woman who was great taste in men, btw ;-)
