Not in the fandom, but I don't see where it's as bad to like someone as to hate them, even if you don't have a good reason for either one. (Besides, maybe "she has good taste in men" is a good enough reason?)

This; I think being positive (liking) is much better than being negative (hating).

Or "she makes someone I like happy."

I think there's a tendency on both sides to assume of the other 'YOU ONLY LIKE/HATE HER BECAUSE SHE'S MARRIED TO HIM', which is frustrating for everyone.

I like Cortese, personally, for reasons entirely unrelated to her marriage! I took a while to warm up to her Ruby, but I came to love her just as much as I did Cassidy's, and she (er, Cortese, not Ruby, obviously) was very sweet when I got her autograph.

Despite my personal tastes, I can entirely understand people disliking her performance. The sheer vitriol I've seen in some places - not even about her as an actor but about her as a person - frightens me a bit, though. Wild, irrational adoration can be irritating, I agree, but I'd hesitate to say it's as bad as wild, irrational hatred.

If we're not allowed to hate her and we're not allowed to like her, then what do you suggest we do?

I can see why that would be annoying, though I will admit that I love it when people are appreciated rather than hated. ^^;

i like her because she's adorable and awesome and from what i hear, very sweet and polite, so

Wait, wait, wait. So...you're saying that you think that the people who love her only love her because she's Jared's wife and the people that hate her only hate her because she's Jared's wife? Am I getting this right? ...Huh. Okay, well, here's my two cents.

I adored the character of Ruby. I thought she was a strong female character and to be quite honest, she is my favourite character of the entire series. Not everybody liked her and that's okay, but I did. But here's the thing: I preferred the Katie!Ruby. I didn't like Gen's version of Ruby at all because I didn't get the sense that it was the same character. The character was changed way too much. I have never and probably will never believe that the season three Ruby and the season four Ruby were the same character. I have spent much too much time thinking about that and coming up with batshit crazy theories. Plus, I hate how things ended up for her character. But that's not really Gen's fault. In the end, the writers and Eric chose the direction the character was going to go in. Gen just said the lines.

So no. I didn't like the character she played on Supernatural.

However, in real life? I think she's awesome. I think she is incredibly sweet and kind and genuine, and those are qualities I really respect in a person. And she doesn't deserve what she gets from some of the more...hardcore...fans. No one does. I like Gen because she is possibly one of the most adorable human beings out there. Sweet, funny, polite. All wonderful characteristics.

In summary: I don't hate her because she is Jared's wife. I merely dislike the character she played. And I don't like her because she's Jared's wife. I love her because of her wonderful personality and her genuine kindness. That is all.

(...Did any part of that make sense? Because I get the feeling that what I was trying to say might not have come across properly.)

I hate the mentality that some fans get where they like or hate a celebrity's SO for the sole reason of being with x celebrity, so I think I get where you're coming from, OP, though I think it's pretty neat when someone becomes a fan of the SO's work after finding out about them through x celebrity's work. Bleh, not sure if my words are coming together coherently right now. Probably not.

That said, I hated this version of Ruby. I know nothing about the actress except that she's married to Jared Padalecki (I learned this after stepping away from Supernatural) and I haven't seen any of her other work so I can't pass a fair judgement call on her, but damn did she come across as wooden for this part when I was still watching the series.

I agree. Well, I do think it's better to admire someone for a stupid reason than to hate someone for an (equally stupid) reason, but...a lot of these people that are all "I LOVE Gen!" really seem like they're only doing it because she's married to Jared, and to counteract all the hate.

I mean...if you are actually a fan of hers, that's great. But doing it JUST because you like her husband is dumb. As dumb as hating her for the same reason, though like I said, it's better to like someone than to hate them.

That being said, I don't like her as an actress. And I didn't like her when I saw her on Flash Forward, way before I ever watched SPN or knew who she was or who she was married to. I have nothing against her personally but I really don't think she can act.

I like her. I think she is pretty and she and Jared are adorable together. I just don't like her portrayal of Ruby, but I got spoiled from Katie Cassidy. He had that oomph and edge.

It can never be "as bad" as the haters, but it can be annoying. It happens in lots of fandoms, not just this one. It makes even less sense when the significant other of the celebrity isn't in the public eye her/himself. Either way, massive hate or love is irrational but at least the love isn't destructive.

Genevieve is a shitty actress. I hated her when she first appeared on SPN. But as the season went on she really started to grow on me and now she's my favorite Ruby despite the bad acting. I came to this conclusion before I even found out they were dating and the information didn't alter that opinion in any way.

I'm not in SPN fandom, but something similar goes on in one of mine, and yeah, I can sort of see what you mean. I still think the haters are worse, but the people who are shipping this guy and his girlfriend can be really creepy too, as they are always trying to know really personal information about them, and have this "OMG they are SOULMATES and will be together FORVEVER attitude," which bothers me in most RPF ships, but especially in this one. However, simply liking her or becoming more interested in her, whether it be Genevieve Cortese or who I'm talking about, is far from a bad thing, and is actually pretty healthy.

Meh. I don't know GC as a person, so I have no opinion of GC as a person. I don't care for GC the actress because I did not think she did a good job with what she was given. I don't know how much of that was the writing's fault, but some of her scenes are just painful to watch.

From the little I've seen, Gen seems like a sweet and fun person. I think she did a terrible job as Ruby though. She, IMO, just couldn't pull it off. Maybe she's better in different roles, but I haven't seen her in anything else.

i feel like this about people in the muse fandom who ~looooove~ kate hudson just because she had a kid with matt bellamy.

I hate her because the bitch CAN'T ACT and she ruined a large chunk of season four for me. I could give a rat's ass about who she's married to.

I hated her because she was a shit Ruby and I missed Katie Cassidy heaps (still do). Marrying Jared had nothing to do with it but I do find I hate worse now because of it.

IDK, I'm not an SPN fan at all, but I tend to assume that the spouses and SOs of people I admire must be pretty cool, too.

I'm so tired of ppl, who'd canonized Sandy, when she'd been Jared's gf and acted like she's the next best thing after sliced bread (I personally thought she's just stupid and annoying), and after they broke up they completely forgot her and then they started acting that way about Cortese.
Don't they see, that first of all it's disrespectful to her, that they see her not as a person, but just as their favorite guy's gf.
