I like her a lot and I actually think she's very level-headed considering the feminazis in fandom...

[identity profile] sophiesenoo.livejournal.com 2011-09-25 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
That card is awesome.

[identity profile] mjnuts.livejournal.com 2011-09-26 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, I'm evil. Sorry if I hurt your sensitivity.

[identity profile] closetospring.livejournal.com 2011-09-26 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
lol no one said you were evil, although you're certainly working your way from "person possibly just repeating a term they've heard" to "willfully ignorant knee-jerk reactionist"

[identity profile] mjnuts.livejournal.com 2011-09-26 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, I was. lol I'm just not used to people interpreting my words as offensive, because basically, I'm not much into fandom (I read fics and I follow f!s, but that's all) and in real life this sort of things kind of dissolves easily into conversation.

And for the record, it is true, I had never used the term before. It just felt like it was the right context to use it, because I happen to know the work of the girl in the secret (I don't remember her name) and I like her opinions, I don't find her extreme or obsessed or somehow making a point of ALL MEN ARE EVIL. Therefore, I don't think she's an extreme feminist, like the OP seemed to imply.

[identity profile] oflittlebrain.livejournal.com 2011-09-26 01:53 pm (UTC)(link)
the deal is that those "feminazis" do not rly exist to the point of it being an issue

and also that even if there are some misandrists out there it's still rly rly not comparable to fucking genocide. and also that i don't believe misandry is in keeping with feminism in general (although there are people who would debate that point)

being an "extreme feminist" just means thinking about things critically through a feminist lens, not standing idly by when sexist shit is happening, etc. imo. you're probably an "extreme feminist" actually, it's not a bad thing.

i just think it sucks that when you say you like a feminist's work, we have to qualify that statement by saying OH SHE'S NOT ONE OF THOSE ~~~EXTREME FEMINISTS idk

Can you please not use the term "feminazi"? As a Jewish woman, it's really offensive and trivializing to hear something like wanting equal rights compared to genocide. Even the most extreme feminists, whether you agree with them or not, don't come anywhere within the same continent of what Hitler did.

[identity profile] mjnuts.livejournal.com 2011-09-26 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
Ahah I see you have a fight to fight there.

Chill, I didn't mean to offend. It's just a term I didn't invent and whose concept everybody understands. I'm pretty sure nobody compares exaggerated Internet feminists to Hitler or the Nazi Party.

[identity profile] closetospring.livejournal.com 2011-09-26 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
"I didn't mean to offend"

ohhhhhhhhh that makes it okay then!

[identity profile] mjnuts.livejournal.com 2011-09-26 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
It makes it what it is: a comment. Didn't realise "feminazi" had become out of date since I've read it so many times here and in other comms, never gave it much thought. I'll never use it again. You know, to avoid hurting the feelings of people like you, who can't be Moses and separate waters. *grins*

Sorry, now I'm just trolling. :) My bad, first time I used it, won't do it again.

[identity profile] closetospring.livejournal.com 2011-09-26 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
"feminazi" isn't out of date, it's an offensive strawman created by American social conservatives to discredit any feminism. just fyi. and it doesn't hurt my feelings, personally, it just shows someone probably doesn't understand feminism completely.

[identity profile] mjnuts.livejournal.com 2011-09-26 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
I actually consider myself a feminist, in the sense that I defend women, I defend equality and I've struggled a lot to overcome my core belief that my gender was inferior to the male gender (this because I'm from a very traditional country, with deeply conservative and Catholic roots). I don't exactly go to demonstrations, but I do my fair share considering I work with kids. :)

I wasn't aware of the origin of the term, assumed it was just one of the many fandom!terms that keep flying around and used it freely. Thanks for taking the time to put me in my place.

[identity profile] closetospring.livejournal.com 2011-09-26 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
lol well, I apologize if it was snippy-- but I would have gladly explained why it was offensive from the start if you had asked or something, rather than replying with stuff like "yes, I'm evil" and "haha I see you have a fight to fight," which is usually how anti-feminist/feminist-apathetic people respond, you know?

but working with kids is good! get 'em started on equality while they're young :)

[identity profile] mjnuts.livejournal.com 2011-09-26 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. I wasn't very nice to begin with, but I actually only said that "fight to fight" bit because the person in question had that as an avatar. :P

It was a bit snippy, but it's okay. I guess everyone gets really defensive in f!s because you never know what's coming your way from the other comments. =X

Yep, I try to deal with that with the kids, but it's a little hard in Portugal. We're not third world, of course not, but the mentality is ingrained in both boys and girls and so I've come across a few situations that made me want to rip my hair out (and beat the boys up). It's totally "Society teaches girls 'don't get raped' instead of teaching boys 'don't rape'" here.

Thanks again for the explanation.

Could you stop the gaslighting please?

(Anonymous) 2011-09-26 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
So you don't think extremist feminists who believe we should bring men down to 10% of their numbers is not to be comparable to Hitler. My bad, i thought massmurderer was unacceptable. Guess i was wrong.

[identity profile] cherrycoloured.livejournal.com 2011-09-26 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
A very, very, very, VERY small group of people who wish to do something terrible but don't are in no way comparable to a political party that had mass support from the people and killed six million Jews and five million others. Please don't trivialize such a tragedy as the Holocaust by comparing them to some wannabe serial killers. Hitler actually killed millions of people and had the backing, whether it be enthusiastic or not, of his country, and that's an extremely important distinction.

I don't even think there are more than a handful of feminists like that anyways, if they exist at all, so it's rather pointless to use an argument like yours anyways.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-26 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
Baaawww I'm Jewish, baby me! I'm Slavic and don't get offended by the word. Learn language evolution.

[identity profile] cherrycoloured.livejournal.com 2011-09-26 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
"I'm not offended, so it's not offensive!" "Language evolution." "We're not going to hold your hand." What original ideas! Nice try trolling, bro. :)

[identity profile] hopeandmemory.livejournal.com 2011-09-26 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
lol nice emotional policing, douche.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-26 06:27 am (UTC)(link)
Only fair after word policing.

Also douche is a SJ no-no word, oops.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-26 10:56 am (UTC)(link)
To some groups it's not. A douche is something marketed as safe for women to use, but it's actually more harmful, so it's a good insult for someone who thinks they're trying to do good but is actually hurting someone else.

[identity profile] oflittlebrain.livejournal.com 2011-09-26 01:58 pm (UTC)(link)
"word policing" oh god stop it
