Let's lay aside the whole zeitgeist thing for a moment (I've done a good amount of studying this era, so I do know what kind of pressure and subtle brainwashing was going on at that time, not to mention the immediate and hideous consequences of dissidence.) Every human being has the potential to be an agent of tremendous evil. And every human being has the potential to be an agent of tremendous good. And every human being has the potential to look the other way because they don't want to get involved, for reasons of fear, uncertainty, etc. And the simple, irrefutable truth is that it is completely impossible to KNOW for absolutely certain which of these things you, I, or anyone else would do in extreme circumstances. You might have gotten involved with the Hitler Youth and gone into the service of Hitler. Or you might have gotten involved with the White Rose and resisted. Or you might simply have kept your head down and hoped things would just be good for your family. You can't know for certain. Don't beat yourself up over a possibility that will never come to pass anyway.

Sensible comment.

Don't beat yourself up over a possibility that will never come to pass anyway.

When I said something like this to my mother, she got angrier than I had ever seen her before, because you can't see the future. Saying it's okay not to think about "what if" because it won't happen anyway is one of the most dangerous things to do. Because it can and will happen again. Not necessarily as a carbon copy, but as something similar or even only remotely similar, but it WILL happen. Thinking about "what if", observing, staying conscious etc. are very, very important.

That's what "never forget" is all about.

I think I worded that badly. What I meant was that the era of Nazi Germany was over, so OP thinking they would've been a Nazi sympathizer wasn't a constructive thing for them to be obsessing over. You're right that similar things can happen and do happen today. As I said, it's impossible to predict how you personally will react, and although most people, like many of the anon commenters above, like to think that they'd be all heroic and do the right thing, it's not possible to KNOW if you would or not. I agree that it's important to consider what you MIGHT do in such a circumstance. I think about that sometimes, what I might do, realistically, in various hardline circumstances. But I don't believe that obsessing over what I might have done in ONE particular historical era, to the point of being as miserable over it as OP apparently is (I did have some difficulty in figuring out what they were trying to say exactly, but they seem to be quite fixated on the idea of "I would have been a Nazi", not "I would be a sympathizer in a similar situation which might arise where I live in the modern day.") Think about it? Yes. Make it such a massive thing in my head, or make that one era, that one set of circumstances, a definite yes/no-this-is-who-I-am when you can't know for sure all the factors involved, or whether that particular set of circumstances might directly correlate with a situation in which you might find yourself in the future? No.
