I'm sure most of us, in the same situation and with the same upbringing, would have done the same thing. Though of course we all hope we'd be the exception... but we can see this trend all through history. Normal people doing terrible things. It's stupid to fool yourself that -you- wouldn't.

I once took an online "Would you have been a Nazi" test and got the answer that I would have been one of the people who just didn't get involved. I'm not saying tests that are the absolute truth but it made me think.

(Also the test didn't ask if I'm Jewish, which I am, so I wouldn't have had the option of just not getting involved. But still.)

I agree with this. Pretty much everyone does things that later generations will
think us evil for participating in. They will wonder where we were for the environment and for animals when we still had time to stop imminent catastrophic ecological collapse.

I had a whole treatise on how the following genocides (...ugh) didn't have the same kind of mindfuckery, but actually the Khmer Rouge used "intellectuals" as their scapegoat and included a terrible dictator...then again I don't think there was the idea of young people joining the effort, while the Hitler Youth were brought up brainwashed.

After taking a course on 3rd Reich propaganda and actually watching the films and shit they made...yeah, I can perfectly understand how and why people got caught up in the Nazi zeitgeist and were genuinely for it. The entire class agreed that Triumph of the Will was pretty damn impressive and yeah, most of us in there would've ended up in the Nazi party if we didn't know how it ended up. There's a shit ton of social and psychological factors that were at work, and Goebbels and friends were evil geniuses at manipulating the populace.

Also, if you really believe your own bullshit, then yeah, maybe you would have been one of the cowardly drones that followed Hitler and made countless people suffer while believing you were doing your country a service. There is nothing wrong with admitting and recognizing your weaknesses. If you just blind yourself to how easy it would be to fall for propaganda and insist that, of course you are an individual, not a sheep! Only idiots and monsters would fall for that!, then it gets hard to recognize when you are being shown propaganda in the present.

I'm glad that you recognized this in yourself, OP. Truth is, a lot of us could have fallen for the pretty promises the Nazi's started with. That's what makes such movements scary; that the evil lurking behind makes itself known when it's too late, and that the guys moving the gears behind anything know how to make it all sound so reasonable and logical. They weren't saying that we should kill all those who are different, no, they started with reasonable proposals, like raise Germany back into a prosperous nation; then they suggested segregation -but those people would be fine, they would be moved to another land and they would taken care of; and by the time the war was over and the veils fell apart the population was horrified to find out what had been going on, and what was worse, what they had contributed to.

Let's lay aside the whole zeitgeist thing for a moment (I've done a good amount of studying this era, so I do know what kind of pressure and subtle brainwashing was going on at that time, not to mention the immediate and hideous consequences of dissidence.) Every human being has the potential to be an agent of tremendous evil. And every human being has the potential to be an agent of tremendous good. And every human being has the potential to look the other way because they don't want to get involved, for reasons of fear, uncertainty, etc. And the simple, irrefutable truth is that it is completely impossible to KNOW for absolutely certain which of these things you, I, or anyone else would do in extreme circumstances. You might have gotten involved with the Hitler Youth and gone into the service of Hitler. Or you might have gotten involved with the White Rose and resisted. Or you might simply have kept your head down and hoped things would just be good for your family. You can't know for certain. Don't beat yourself up over a possibility that will never come to pass anyway.

You could also just have been a German soldier. A lot of the people fighting for Germany in WWII weren't Nazis. Most of them weren't. If you didn't live near a concentration camp, there's a good chance you had no idea the Holocaust was going on either; you thought the Jews were being put to useful work instead of destroying your economy, and you thought you were fighting for the fatherland.

People seem to forget that German soldiers as highly ranked as Rommel disagreed with Hitler about his treatment of the Jews. He treated captive Jewish soldiers as any other soldiers under the Geneva convention, even after Hitler ordered him to execute them, and later tried to assassinate the man. It's possible you would have sided with him, like many of his soldiers did.
