This is a VERY long reach for a fandom secret. Does just writing 'media' make it count as one now? Also, if you really believe your own bullshit, then yeah, maybe you would have been one of the cowardly drones that followed Hitler and made countless people suffer while believing you were doing your country a service. Fuck you.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-25 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
If they believe they're doing their counrty a service then how are they cowardly?

[identity profile] ncc-gqmf.livejournal.com 2011-09-25 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Does that mean we shouldn't judge people like the WBC, who genuinely believe they're doing a service? Or, say, people who support Al Qaeda, who believe they're doing the world a service?

(Anonymous) 2011-09-25 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
... and that connects to being a coward how exactly?

(Anonymous) 2011-09-25 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Hate the sin, not the sinner.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-26 04:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Al Qaeda extremists are a lot of things, but I would never say they lack guts - this is part of the problem.

This is exactly what German historical revisionists want you to believe, that they had no choice and were only following orders. Stop believing the cowardly lies from your grandparents' generation and man up, they knew what they were doing and didn't care.

YES. THANK YOU.
I hate it when people take all of the human agency out of history. Nothing is inevitable, people make choices, those choices have consequences, FUCKING DEAL WITH IT.

Re: +1

(Anonymous) 2011-09-25 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, obviously you were there and know exactly what people were thinking and knew. Come on, Hitler didn't become chancellor by opening a concentration camp. He started off as somewhat normal, perceived as the same brand of crazy as those right-wing anti-immigration politicians in the US.

By the time when the shit hit the fan Germany was a totalitarian state in which a small political joke would get you arrested. Unless you have lived in North Korea until recently you have no idea what that looks like. Did the Germans look the other way in a big way? Sure. Did plenty of them commit plenty of intentional evil? Sure.

But it's not a uniquely German phenomenon, nor is it something that equally applied to Germans. The White Rose people are not comparable in any shape or form to Mengele.

And your attempt to pin evil as something uniquely German is quite awful. In Hungary 100,000s of Jewish people got send to German concentration during a time where merely 200 German soldiers were stationed there.

Meanwhile in China the Japanese killed millions of civilians. Or to quote a Japanese WWII veteran: "Every Japanese soldier in China raped. Anyone who says different is a liar."

The point the OP might go for is one that you can witness on every battlefield, every time you purchase something that was made by child labor, during every genocide and the silence during every genocide. Evil is not the other. Evil is something that in the end is universally human, something that can be committed with intent, by group pressure, by looking the other way, by purposefully ignoring uncomfortable realities.

Everyone can be evil and you, as someone who is currently reading this on a device that was manufactured in a country where they have executed thousands of political dissidents, are not sitting in the ivory tower of righteousness. You can call other people out on their evil but please beware of the splinter in your own eye. Because the number one thing that allows people to ignore their own darkness is the belief that they are in the light.

You win.

Can we all just stop pretending that the others are "the bad guys" and that we are the "good guys"? That "us vs them" mentality is what keeps fucking us all over every time humanity could have made real progress.

No, this is what American psychologists proved 50 years ago. Your opinion < science.

So wait, psychology is not a discipline that changes over time?
All conclusions that psychologists came to fifty years ago are still valid?

Oh, grow up you racist fuck.
Americans stood by and watched as innocent Japanese families were placed in internment camps.
And stood by and watched as people were tortured at Guantanamo Bay.
And then we have the Killing fields in Cambodia.
It goes on and on. Don't act like shit like this only happened in Germany.

You know the whole Hitler's Willing Executioners thesis has been debunked by all credible historians, right?

ALL GERMANS KNEW ABOUT AND DIRECTLY PARTICIPATED IN THE HOLOCAUST is about the same level of insipidly false historical revisionism as THE HOLOCAUST NEVER HAPPENED.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-25 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Anti semitism is ~trendy~ u gaiz.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-26 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
And while you are sitting there people in the Middleeast are getting bombed by terrorist. I don't see you grabbing a gun to protect them. No, you are surfing the net. So, before you accuse every german you should think about how many shit you ignore yourself out of comfort. It's easy to throw stones, isn't it? Even if it's just a neighbour who gets mistreatet, most shit gets ignored because people don't want to get involved. How many people get beaten up or raped in public, in some dark street, while people walk away? This is not just something on a scale of a genocide, it's right beside your home.

If we would do something everytime someone get's mistreated, maybe some people would have been less hateful.

This is the dumbest comment ever. There's a huge fucking difference between something happening in your own backyard and something happening halfway around the world. You CAN do something about fascism in your own damn country.
elialshadowpine: (Default)

It's not like most people are doing anything about shit going on in their own countries, either.

Cute.

Except the Germans' options wasn't "to do something about fascism in their country", it was "doing sth against your government that will kill you and your family if you step out of line, btw your neighbours are already gone so you better don't even ask where THEY went".

Also, look up what happened to those who DID "do something against fascism".
