You could also just have been a German soldier. A lot of the people fighting for Germany in WWII weren't Nazis. Most of them weren't. If you didn't live near a concentration camp, there's a good chance you had no idea the Holocaust was going on either; you thought the Jews were being put to useful work instead of destroying your economy, and you thought you were fighting for the fatherland.

People seem to forget that German soldiers as highly ranked as Rommel disagreed with Hitler about his treatment of the Jews. He treated captive Jewish soldiers as any other soldiers under the Geneva convention, even after Hitler ordered him to execute them, and later tried to assassinate the man. It's possible you would have sided with him, like many of his soldiers did.

oh wow, i'd never heard that about rommel. then again, i don't know as much about the actual battle stuff during world war II as i do about the holocaust and the japanese treatment of china and korea, etc.

if i'd been able to double major in history like i wanted to, i would have liked to focus on WWII. :/

Rommel was a pretty cool guy. I can't recommend reading up on him enough.

Why would they? Rommel's dissent, and the choice of many of his men to follow his example and not Hilter's has been well-documented.

Or did you mean the whole German citizens didn't know thing. That has been so thoroughly established - that overwhelming majority of German civilians thought they were just work camps - that it wasn't even questioned until a hack historian with an axe to grind thought he'd make a few bucks over the controversy of targeting German civilians. His lies and unscrupulous manipulation of data have been so thoroughly debunked by credible historians in the years since that it hardly even bears mention anymore.

Besides which, many many Holocaust survivors have stated over and over that they too thought they were just work camps. Unless the reality of the matter was transmitted via magical Aryan brainwaves, and Christian-German wives were perfectly willing to send their Jewish-German husbands off to death camps without revealing the true nature of the places (which all of non-Jewish Germans totes knew through magic), then that's proof enough that that was the commonly held belief about the camps. And by contradicting the stories of Holocaust survivors, said hack historian exposes himself as a complete and utter ass.

Can I get some links to this stuff? I'd like to have a weapon in my arsenal next time I encounter some jackass acting like ALL THE GERMANS were and probably still are totes behind the death camps.
