(Anonymous) 2011-09-26 12:28 am (UTC)(link)That's not even remotely true. One of the hardest parts of shopping around a novel, for example, is writing the synopsis. When you're that close to a story it can sometimes be very hard to pick out the most enticing parts.
And on the other side, I have seen many enticing, pithy summaries that were followed up by shit. Writing a summary is barely even the same skill set as writing a long narrative story. I mean there's a reason why they don't have authors write the blurbs on the backs of novels.

Actually, it's pretty true in regards to fanfiction. Most people who cop out in their summary fail to deliver in the actual work, as well. I have honestly yet to see anyone write something along the lines of "I suck at this, oops!" and yet pull off a good story within. At least show me some effort in the small blurb needed to get me interested in your story to begin with.

In my case, I'll admit never having made it through a fic that began that way, although I've attempted a few. I don't think the writers of them should GTFO or anything; I'm glad they're writing, and I hope they keep it up. Doesn't mean they'll be on my to-read list right now, though.
