I don't understand how anyone can be happy with what happened to River's characterization this past series as a whole. We started with an adventurous and independent woman, now we have a love sick obsessed woman who will let the universe die for one man and who has no identity outside the Doctor.

The wedding definitely made me roll my eyes, but it was just one of many problems of what happened to poor River. Even Alex Kingston could not save it.

She was raised to kill the Doctor. And she got called out on her "nobody will suffer more than me" thing. Thirdly, she'll basically commit suicide when the Doctor doesn't recognize her. A badass, majorly flawed person in love doesn't have to be a man.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-15 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
There is a difference between a flawed female character and a problematic female character. You may not agree but some of us are seeing River as problematic.

Moffat has issues with his views on women, if you examine his female characters closely enough, it's not really hard to see.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-15 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
But this is what I'm saying: being raised to kill the Doctor, their back to front interactions, refusing to kill him and destroying time, being a psychopath - none of these are portrayed as okay things.

This. She was awesome, but became mediocre.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-15 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
well she is getting younger, younger people are less capable due to lack of life-experiences. Don't worry, she'll grow into awesome River, but that is in our past now.

This comment is how I feel.

Also, I'm not sure what happened, because I enjoyed the first half of the season, and almost nothing of the second half. I literally forgot I'd watched the finale.

Stormaggedon was cute though :D

(Anonymous) 2011-10-15 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
This.

I used to really like her in the beginning. I was all, "Oh my god this chick is AWESOME I can't wait to see more!!"

And then...I saw more. 8|

(Anonymous) 2011-10-15 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
of course she was awesome and amazing, and all of that other stuff at the start. Or rather, at the finish. Since what we saw first was the end product of someone living through all this stuff. That's life, when you are a mature adult you are a much better person than the drippy wet pillock you were as a kid, or a teenager, or in your twenties, all of that is a learning experience enabling growth. We saw the mature adult at the end of that growth first, and have worked backwards ever since. It is character regression, intentionally so, as we go back along her timeline as she gets younger, less capable, less experienced, more starry eyed, more like a daft teenager. With a concept like River's of course she is going to be less amazing each time we see her, and that makes her more fallible and real.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-15 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
The problem with that is it now affects how we see her as a fully matured adult though, we didn't know at the beginning that her life revolved around the Doctor, we know she cared for him deeply yes, but for all we knew she had her own identity outside of the Doctor.

Now she doesn't, that's not just regressing her younger self, that's regressing her older self as well in the process.

Not necessarily. Just because she was initially obsessed with the Doctor and her identity revolved around him doesn't mean she didn't then develop other interests/relationships.

[identity profile] elica.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 07:43 am (UTC)(link)
She grows up to be the kind of woman we saw in the last season, who coldn't decide between her mission to kill the doctor and her love for him. Than she became the independant and badass heroin we saw last year.
You know how ? Because the first River we saw was older than the last one.
I find this quite comforting.

[identity profile] vivalana.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't like River's behavior either, but she is actually relatively "young" during the finale compared to her other appearances in the show. So I can buy that she grew up to be much more awesome.

Thank you. ♥

I wonder if that's part of the problem with trying to tell her story backwards, though. I hope we see older, competent River again in s7 (apparently this is up to Alex Kingston) because I don't want to be left with 6x13 as my lasting impression of River and their relationship.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-15 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
You can tell a story backwards and make characters likable, I just have a feeling this is a case of doing-it-wrong.

Like even trying to forgive a younger version of River I still do not understand her actions nor do I like them.

And I'm not even sure what made her turn or mature. Her characterization just seems really weak as a whole.

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this. I agree that there are parts that could be seen as problematic, but when people forget that this is "young" River and not "old" River, that bugs me. :/

(Anonymous) 2011-10-15 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's both romantic and terrible at the same time. Because I don't think the Doctor loves Rives like she loves him, but I think he does love her in some way, and he does by far the kindest thing he can. This doctor is one of the most inhuman ones, and I admit that it's really to my tastes!

Something else that I really like is that her actions aren't framed as just and/or justified by the text. What she does created a really large problem that the Doctor just barely managed to solve. He told her what would happen if she tried to change his death, and when she did it anyway it ended in disaster. This is how not to write a Mary Sue; repercussions.

And I found her willingness to sacrifice everything for love really moving, actually. Because she thought there was a chance. It wasn't just a selfish love either; you really get the feeling that the universe itself would be worse off without him.

It's the thing with Moffat, I think; it's all in the details, but the details makes the epic...ness, heh. Also, I love trickery and sneakiness in plotting, which he has a lot of.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-15 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
that is their relationship in a nutshell, they are constantly manipulating each other. Every time they meet one of them knows something the other doesn't and twists it to their advantage. Both of them do it.

And rail against it as being icky, and nasty, and whatever, but it works for them. Both as characters and as people.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-15 03:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Wasn't that obvious from the beginning?
The Doctor is over a millennium older than pretty much any other character on the show. I never had the feeling he was doing more than humoring the crush a teenager has on an older father figure.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-15 04:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I wish this fucked up space opera would finally die and give me back my Doctor Who Science Fiction Adventure series. And i hope the writers piss off, since they completely twisted an good series and turned it into some romance drama bullshit.

...er, when did Captcha take up with the JWs?? O.O

[identity profile] sevenjetc.livejournal.com 2011-10-16 12:37 pm (UTC)(link)
He didn't tell her his name. So it wasn't the actual wedding. I still think she is going to marry Twelve, whomever he will be, and he will be the one who gives her the screwdriver before going to the library...

(Anonymous) 2011-10-17 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
...but Twelve is the Valeyard!
