It's the way it was handled that doesn't sit well with me. I actually shipped Harry/Ginny in the fifth book, when I thought Ginny was growing up and becoming awesome by herself. But then it turns out she dated around because she wanted attention from Harry, and then it just turned her character growth into pathetic attempts for the main hero to gain a likable love interest. Also, it's okay for Ron and Hermione to come along, but Ginny has to stay behind and wait for Harry because she's the hero's girlfriend? Yes, she fought in Hogwarts too, but that still makes absolutely no sense to me.

I also don't get why Dumbledore, McGonagall, Snape and all the awesome adult characters just stayed alone forever. I guess with Snape, he's obsessed with Lily, but what about the others? I hated the Dumbledore is gay bomb because great, he's gay, he's also alone forever and now he's dead!

So, unless you met someone as a young adult and managed to snag them as your partner, you're meant to stay alone forever. WTF?

JK herself said that the teachers have private lives but keep them private. We know that Neville ends up with Hannah Abott, but who's to say she lives at the school? For all we know, he takes the floo back home every night. Could be that the other professors did the same thing who had families.

I agree that it would have been nice to have seen more of that, but it was Harry's perspective and I don't think he cared about which professor got married. >_<

Harry and Ginny always felt weird to me. She was his biggest fan, then she was really awesome and I liked her for her, and then, like you said, all her characterization was gone. But that's because JK wrote her to be the love interest. Harry pushing her away and shielding her when that was a lost cause always bothered me. I'd probably have liked it better if she'd been better characterized from the start. But the entire relationship just felt like a weird Oedipal complex/make Harry a Weasley thing.

I wish people would learn what an Oedipal complex is. It's not two people having the same colour of hair.

I do know what it is. I have seen Oedipus Rex and I'm familiar with what's meant by Oedipus Complex. I'm not saying it's an actual complex. Perhaps what I mean is that the whole repeat of James and Lily comes through in Harry and Ginny. More than anything though, it's his way of being a part of the Weasley family which I think is just ridiculous because he's a part of the family regardless of being married to the one and only daughter.

I'm not the anon from above, but I'm really curious about your comment, because I don't understand how what your describing is an Oedipal complex (or like Oedipus in any way). I thought an Oedipal complex was the desire to kill your father to have sex with your mother, and no matter how I try to shape that idea, I can't get it to fit your statement.

I'm genuinely curious. I'm not trying to be a smartass or anything. It just seems like an interesting bit of meta and I'd like to hear more.

I don't think you're being a smart ass. Admittedly, I know it's not actually an Oedipus complex, so what I said isn't really what I meant. Mostly, I just think that Ginny and Harry are honestly a replica of James and Lily. He's never had a bond with his mother so you can't really argue that he even wants to sleep with her (Lily).

Good. :) I tend to be overly cautious in this forum so I don't unintentionally insult someone.

I like HP, but I'm not in the fandom, so when I saw something about Harry having an Oedipus complex, my first thought was, "Woah! I should reread the series!" I mean, if that sort of stuff is happening in the background, I need to know! :D

No worries. I can understand being cautious on a forum like this. Fandom tends to get intense sometimes.

It could just be how I see it coming from the way they both look, but to me it just felt like the one person chasing another endlessly, then they finally get together. The tables are a bit turned and it's certainly not the exact same, but it just seemed like such a repeat to me. I mean, we certainly didn't see much of James and Lily, but these are also very old opinions and I haven't read the books in a long while. So the next time I read them, I may be refreshing my opinions.

I agree with this. I pretty much try to ignore and forget that bit about Ginny dating to get attention.
Although not all the adult characters were alone forever if they didn't hook up in high school. Lupin married Tonks and Bill married Fleur, and none of those people met at Hogwarts. But I know what you mean about none of the older adults finding love.

Yeah, when I write Ginny, I write her has having actual feelings for Michael, Dean et al because the alternative just completely baffles me from a character standpoint. I handwave it in my mind as LOOK PEOPLE LIED TO HARRY TO MAKE HIM FEEL SPECIAL OKAY.

Yep she dated around to grab Harry's attention so much that Harry didn't even realize she was dating Micheal Corner till Hermione told them. Nice job there in getting his attention Ginny.

Sorry but this is one thing I don't agree with it. She stuck with both boys for months and nothing shows that she didn't actually care for them. Hermione using Cormac as a date is what dating for attention is like.

Ginny claiming she would hope Harry would one day come around and notice her if she went out and grew up a little =/= She dated all those boys for Harry's benefit only.

Hermione flat out tells us that she gave Ginny some wake-up call sort of advice. Very much in the, "Girl, he's not into you because you shut down and get weird around him. Do yourself a favor, go out there, find yourself, date some other boys, have some fun, get your feet (and maybe vagina) wet, then maybe try again--because the way you're going about this is useless."

So, she took Hermione advice. And along the way, she seemed to realize that Harry Potter wasn't the only boy in the universe, and as much as she would love for him to come around because she clearly had feelings for him, if he didn't, life went on for her.

Also, I never once got the impression she didn't actually care for Michael or Dean. Hell, as you said, if she was doing this for Harry's attention, then why the fuck did he not even know about Michael until a year after the fact?
