Yes, they seriously have gotten 'butthurt'- I've heard people in other comms say they refuse to see Secret of Kells just after seeing a screencap of Brother Assoua. And all manner of expressions of disgust and watermelon gifs followed.

Although I understand their concerns, their leaping to conclusions without digging further upset me, because Brother Assoua struck me as one of the more sensible scribes who knows why he needs to work on books (and shows concern for Brendan on the scaffolding), and you'd never get that if you refused to see it altogether.

OT: There was this animation festival in early 2009 and this movie sounded like fun so I went to see it. The author was there too, gave a speech and all. Don't know the canon, but Scandinavia isn't a country (then even less than now), and parts of it wasn't Christian until well into the 12th century.

Sorry! I know Scandinavia isn't a country, but cramming in a tiny Sweden/Denmark/Norway/Finland I thought would have rendered the secret unreadable, so I substituted.

Note that I said 'touched', not 'converted': for example, attempts to Christianize China essentially failed, being banned along with Buddhism in the mid-9th century. In the 16th century it got another foothold, only to slip again when the Pope said that praying to your ancestors and making offerings to them was not cool with Jesus. In response to this display of petty Faithbook drama, the Emperor of China then said gtfo banned again because ancestors > Jesus.

The animators actually confirmed that, saying that the monks represented people who fled to Ireland after the fall of the Roman Empire, which is an idea from the book How The Irish Saved Civilization.

sorry to harsh on your squee or whatever, but those character designs ruined the movie for me. they could have had a diverse cast without resorting to racist caricatures, especially for the african priest.

Someone downthread said the character designs were based on art from that time period, which I found interesting food for thought- it's made me curious enough to want to research racial representation in media over a thousand years ago!

I lovelovelove Secret of Kells, and I understand what they were trying to represent with the characters of the monks, but I have to admit, the actual character designs made me go o_O the first time I saw it, especially Brother Assoua and Brother Tang. So... yeah.

That said, Secret of Kells! Yay! :D

I was the same way at first, so I can understand the concern, but having stepped back and thought about it... yeah, I arrived at the conclusion of my secret.

But I've seen enough people raging about the character designs that I think it's better to keep that opinion in a secret.

Yeah, that's the character design for all of them. It might problematic at a first glance, but it follow the path of all the other characters. I thought the movie was pretty great.

From what I remember of articles and interviews and such, those characters' designs were actually based on authentic art from that time period. Even the Ethiopian priest. So, not so much racist as true to the art they were emulating. I'd rather they approach that with integrity than censor themselves.

Okay, I finally gotta check this movie out. I remember hearing about it back when it was nominated for an Oscar, and I had put it on my "to watch" list then. I just never got around to it.

I also think the black dude is kinda hot, just sayin'. Lips are sexy!
