Same here. I do like indie comics because they're by necessity short and actually get to the point, but I can't stand testosterone soaps like X-Men, etc that go on and on forever in various AUs and crossovers and reboots. In movie form, the writers are required to actually write a story with a story arc. So those I tend to enjoy.

See also: male gaze. You can cram a lot of objectification into a PG-13 movie, but you're at least limited by actual human biology. In superhero comics, the women are often so grossly, unnaturally objectified that I find the rest of the comic unreadable.

I'm a comic book reader, and you know what, OP? I don't think you're doing it wrong, you get all of the fun and none of the bullshit, it's perfect.

[identity profile] foxhound.livejournal.com 2011-10-25 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Does the internet really explode, though? You guys seem to be the norm.

Nothing wrong with that. Just don't call yourself a "comics fan" or else those heads will really explode just thinking about the literal meaning of it all.

Or do so, if you're really a troll.

I'm enjoying the use of trollface in this secret.

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2011-10-25 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
a Me too. <3

I got into comics through the movies, and tv shows. I'm a fan of the characters, but I don't feel like trawling through years of continuity to start becoming a "real" fan. I like what I like, haters gonna hate. :3

(Anonymous) 2011-10-25 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Nothing wrong with that, OP! My sister is the exact same way.

[identity profile] writerserenyty.livejournal.com 2011-10-25 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
I'm like this too! In particular I really enjoy X-Men through the movies and some of the cartoons, but I've never been able to get through the comics.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-25 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
depends on the comics. For a long time some comics had really, really, really shitty artists working for them *koffMarvelkoff* so anything which actually had a decent visual for the character was preferable to the comic version.

And some had really good artists, but really shitty stories *koffDCkoff*, so anything that could tell a proper story was preferable to the comic.

Of course, sometimes you had a comic with really great artists, and really great writers, but you ended up with a movie that was fucking shite beyond all measure *koff2000ADkoff*. Gruddammit.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-25 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
I really, really think your trollface usage is misapplied here. Maybe once upon a time, fanboy rage would be heard far and wide whenever somebody admitted they'd only seen a movie rather than read the comic. But nowadays movie/tv fans and comic fans seem to mix pretty seamlessly. Especially with the popularity of Nolan's Batman series and the recent explosion of X-Men: First Class and the Avengers movies. If you do see people mentioning comics in posts about the movies, it's usually people asking for recs on where to start reading, not people raging that movie fans aren't 'true fans' or whatever. Sure, there might be a few fans who look down on others for not reading comics, but they're also the sort of people who look down on other comic fans for commiting the crime of not having read or enjoyed their favourite stories, so I don't think anyone takes their rage seriously.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-25 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Same here. I love many of the characters and stories, but I just don't enjoy reading comic books, no matter how good they are. It's just not my thing.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-25 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
I like both, but you know what I don't like?

I feel the same. I have no shame.

[identity profile] sakikotetsu.livejournal.com 2011-10-25 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Same, man. I've really come to love quite a few of the comic book movies out there, and I love the characters n' such, but I have absolutely no interest in reading any of the original comics.

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-10-25 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
That's pretty okay. I do like comic books, but I don't read ALL of them. I never read Thor, for example, but like the movie. Also, cash problem keep me from keeping up with too my series now, but i still love the films.

[identity profile] 365reasonswhy.livejournal.com 2011-10-25 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't think people had a problem with this unless you went around professing to be a big comic book fan or acting as if you know all about the characters or histories when all you've seen is the movies.

I love comic book movies too, because I love action adventure and fantasy, but I've never been interested in the actual comics. It's just not my thing in paper form. I can't even get into the comics for TV shows I've loved. I've never caught any shade for it.

You should try telling them you prefer the movie. The explosion of nerdrage is amusing to watch.

Same here? I don't get why this is a secret.

I just find that action scenes seem to work better for me with actual movement.

Don't worry, OP, you're not alone. I'm writing an entire X-Men AU based solely off the movies and a grand total of three comic books read. :)
