I never really understood how anyone could compare Twilight to Harry Potter. It's not because Twilight sucks or anything though (I mean, it does, but that isn't the point in this case), but the series are just so different from each other, it just seems weird to try and compare them

MTE. One is a romance, the other is an adventure/bildungsroman. Why do that, seriously. :/

This.

The entire secret is explained by all popular Young Adult literature being lumped together. Harry Potter is one of the most popular YA series ever, so any new popular YA series is compared by the lazy to Harry Potter because they share common YA features.

Lol, I kind of want to do this on my secrets now. Just for the funsies.

Yeah. How dare they compare Harry Potter to His Dark Materials? I mean, seriously, His Dark Materials is clearly the better-written series.

Re: NS1

[identity profile] shah-of-blah.livejournal.com 2011-10-25 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
It's also been around longer, so why anyone would say it was 'the new HP' is beyond me.

Agreed. I love Harry Potter, but HDM had much more complex writing, not to mention characters.

Re: NS1

(Anonymous) 2011-10-25 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
I love both of them to death and I think they're pretty much equal in terms of writing. I can't even say which I prefer.

So much this. *gratuitous use of Iorek icon*

(Anonymous) 2011-10-25 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
but complaining on the internet is doing something, anonny. Can't you see the difference they're making??

(so, yeah, unfortunately I doubt a lot of them do much to cause the changes they seem to desperately want. But to be honest, with the way some of the act, I don't know if I want them to. Seems like they might end up setting some things back a bit)

Ugh, I've heard the argument that it is "ableist" to wonder about that because people may have social anxiety and therefore wouldn't be able to do anything IRL of that sort.

Even though you know, you could be writing well-thought out blog posts, interact in support groups online and do all that sort of stuff to help out SJ causes without having to leave aggressive messages on tumblr/livejournal and whatnot.

[identity profile] crownedapple.livejournal.com 2011-10-25 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
N!S1 Who's comparing Harry Potter to His Dark Materials? HDT can't be the "new" Harry Potter, it was published earlier. Try harder.
N!S2 Truth.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-25 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
Doesn't matter if it was published first, it was often publicized as "the next Harry Potter". I saw it all over the libraries I frequent... one of them had a damn table for Harry Potter withdrawal, including stuff like HDM, Twilight, Eragon...

[identity profile] lemon-m.livejournal.com 2011-10-25 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
It's a marketing thing; usually it's a news site or ad that starts calling it that to easily create buzz. They never, ever are the next Harry Potter :)

I've seen the Hunger Games movies compared to Twilight because it has hot boyz in it. I don't even like the premise of the Hunger Games books, but that's a low blow.

Do what, exactly? Realistically speaking, what can they do outside of livejournal, if the problem is in livejournal? Go talk to the people irl? Send angry emails?

NF

I'm really glad they're not. I don't think I could put up with their constant bleating in real life. At least I can switch the internet off.

It's a pity that the first His Dark Materials book was published before the first Harry Potter book. The second one came out the same year.

A little confused as to how one thing can be 'the next' thing when it came first.

His Dark Materials

Hey. Hey. HEY.

This series came first-- it is not the "new" Harry Potter.

I hate "the new ______" advertising in general, not just because it's almost always an insulting comparison (Twilight to Harry Potter? MOTHERFUCKER PLEASE) but also because it's lazy and stupid.

However, I am comfortable putting His Dark Materials and Artemis Fowl in the same category as HP. I love it most, but if those serieses were people I think they'd hang out.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-25 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
The only reason people call some things The New Harry Potter is because they want it to become the same sort of phenomenon. They don't actually think it's similar. They're just playing it up so that they can start up another giant worldwide phenomenon with multimillion dollar films, amusement parks, exhibitions, etc and rake in the cash. The thing is, it's not going to happen again, not the way it did with HP... at least not for a long time. You can't slap the title The New Beatles onto a band and expect a resurgence of Beatlemania. They joked about it with Bierber but c'mon.

It's rare, it's unique, and it requires a very lucky combination of things no one could predict. HP probably happened at an opportune moment. It exploded with the internet. It got lots of kids into reading. It was fun for boys and girls, and people of all ages, and its themes and ideas worked across all borders. Everyone could enjoy it. It also had a lot of ridiculous marketing thanks to religious groups trying to ban it. It was all over the place. Twilight couldn't recreate it with the Team Edward vs. Team Jacob crap. His Dark Materials was probably too controversial--it couldn't gain enough of a readership in the United States because of its atheist undertones (fairly blatant, to be honest). I don't know much about the Hunger Games so I can't comment on that.

All this to say that I highly doubt ANYTHING will be The New Harry Potter anytime soon. It won't even be the New Harry Potter... it'll just be its own thing. To be that big, it can't be in the shadow of something else. It has to have its own stage, it has to stand out for its own reasons, not to emulate something that came before. And it has to be lucky and appear at the right time.
