It's because one of the signs of badfic is poor spelling and grammar. And with the best will in the world, I'm not going to be able to read a fic with repeated, glaring mistakes in it. It throws me straight out of the story.

(but this has never been a problem with the ESL authors I know - they're either twice as careful with their writing as the firstlanguagers, or they have betas go over it to fix their mistakes, or both. With the result that I now automatically assume that a poorly written fic is a sign of someone who just couldn't be bothered)

A beta-reader is not that hard to find.

Personally, I'd rather not give the benefit of the doubt to the terminally lazy.

I don't think the OP is talking about writing fic. it sounds like s/he is just frustrated about posting on F!S or elsewhere on livejournal and having people attack her grammar and spelling, which is pretty understandably annoying.

I'm not sure about this. The subject part just mentions that the OP is frustrated with fandom, and the only mention of f!s is in a comment about its apparently high standards. This could be taken to be that the OP is referring to secrets, but it could just as easily be taken to mean the OP thinks we're anal-retentive.

Well, we are anal-retentive. You can be pretty sure that any minor mistake will be seen by somebody in the collective group of fandom. :)

Came here to say this, and this also generally applies to comments on forums and such, as well. The only reason I know who is an ESL is because they do as the secret-poster is complaining about and announce/apologize in advance for any errors, which are pretty much always nonexistent or nearly so.
