I wish I wasn’t one of those people you’re talking about but I just can’t help geting really nervous in social situations :(

It isn't shyness that's annoying, it's when nerdy people are TOO outgoing in a really embarrassing way (like shouting memes or talking too loud or glomping people or what have you) that's annoying.

Plenty of people aren't that outgoing or are nervous in social situations and manage to not be annoying or embarrassing to be around at all. I think some shy people are really cute actually

You know, not that I don't get the issue (I've been irritated by loud, annoying fans myself), but I feel like people give way too much of a shit about this. I find loud, annoying frat boys shouting out drunken comments about people's tits just as irritating, but you don't see people going on about how embarrassing it is to be around them. Sometimes I wonder if there's an unconscious status issue going on.

Regardless: If a person is sometimes annoying but otherwise shares your interests and is a decent friend, then what does it hurt giving them a chance in some limited way? (Ex, have them over for nerd night at your place, where no one gives a shit if they are being loud and obnoxious about fandom.) Especially given that they're in college, it's possible they will do a lot of growing and changing.

Yeah, this. I think there's extra scrutiny and criticism toward people who behave in obnoxious ways about unusual or geeky things, when people who behave in the exact same obnoxious ways about more "normal" things get a pass, or at least aren't treated like complete social pariahs.
