I don't get this at all.

I mean, I know that the Web is supposed to be less serious than RL and all that, but why is English supposed to be a subject where being wrong about something is forgiven just because someone isn't familiar with the subject matter? This doesn't hold true for math or politics or history or anything else. Why languages?

maybe it's because we're on an informal message board on the internet chatting about shit, not in a lecture hall. English isn't the subject in question. it's a method used to discuss other subjects.

Politics can be forgiven if they are not familiar with the subject matter.

Besides, nitpicking grammar gets a bad rap because it can derail what is being discussed (especially in F!s).

No, they really can't be. Haven't you seen any of the discussion threads on F!s about how people need to "educate themselves?" When the answer is a quick google away (and it usually is) people get a huge backlash for being uninformed.

Politics are really in a huge area of grey, though. And they vary from person to person so there is no definite answer to a question.

"Politics can be forgiven if they are not familiar with the subject matter."

Really? What internet are you from?

Oh, that is sad that people you've come across are not forgiving people.

So. Much. This.

Because purveyors of language are not respected. Period. Many people who can string together two sentences have zero respect for people who make their living writing or editing, because they figure they could do the exact same thing better.

One of the first examples of this was a college roommate who was an accounting major, while I was an English major. She used to get angry with me during finals because I didn't cram - well, I paid attention in class during the semester, unlike her, who slept in several mornings and drag-assed to class late or not at all. She said my lesser cramming was because my major was so much easier than hers (as opposed to because she was a lazy bitch), and said she could do what I do any day, but I couldn't do what she did. I've run into this many times during my writing/editing career, since (usually from people who didn't like what I reported).

This is only vaguely related to the subject matter, but as long as we're sharing. :) I'm a senior in engineering, and I have two best friends, one who is majoring in political science and the other who is majoring in English. Their tests would kill me, because essay tests are way, way harder than calculation ones to me, and I think most people would agree. Being good at language is a mastery of an art.

And seriously, I respect the hell out of journalists and editors. So there you go.

I like math, but I wouldn't be an engineer even if I could do it - it seems dry and difficult and like my brain would explode from trying to figure out the simplest part of the job, LOL.
