For all of the people who are saying that, well, they're thugs, what do you expect? I have two things to say to that.

1) Sexism is not, in most cases, what's making them bad guys. The sexism is window dressing, and it's unnecessary. I don't think anyone's expecting these guys to be respectful of women. They just find it gratuitous and uncomfortable. What's more, some of us get tired of sexism being appropriated as a quick and easy way to show people are ~bad~ or make a title ~edgy~ It's cheap, and it's frustrating. It rarely actually adds anything to the game, it's not an issue the game's writers are actually going to engage, and pretty much all of these characters would be just as effectively bad without the sexism.

2) This is fun and escapism. For some women--not all, but some--getting smacked in the face by misogyny ruins the escapism. Even if it were realistic for thug types (which is kind of an issue that could stand to be unpacked on its own), that doesn't make it fun for a lot of us. I can think of more than one game I've gone to play for fun, and then oh look, sexual harassment in the game. Because that's really what I'm looking for when I want to destress. On the other hand... I really doubt there are too many people whose experiences are actually being enhanced by some random rape comments.

+1 Especially number 2. Goddamn Grand Theft Auto. I started with number 2, back when the graphics were still simple and all that, and then a bunch of the later games had prostitution missions and crap like that. Ruined the series for me, thanks game developers.

the main thing i found tedious and monotonous was that the thugs repeat the same lines over and over and over again. would it have killed rocksteady to give the thugs more lines? or at least given them different voice actors so that they don't all sound like the same douche.

and while we're at it, where the hell are all the female criminals in gotham? or do they not exist? (not counting harley, catwoman and ivy of course)

This. I actually had a fight with a friend of mine over this just the other night. He kept saying that because they were prison inmates and that is how inmates talk, it wasn't a problem. I kept telling him that it wasn't that people wanted them to never swear ever, but that the sheer overabundance of the word "bitch" was uncalled for. When it comes to swearing in media, I liken it to using spices in cooking. Treat the words like cumin, not like salt.

Thankfully he was with me on the sexism being wrong. The comments about assaulting Harley and Catwoman are sick and unnecessary.
