Isn't that 'typical', uh, 'thuggish' behaviour and language? I presume they were going with asshole-behaviour realism and, although I haven't played and have no intention of playing the game in question, I'd find it pretty jarring if the enemies started being all "Gosh darn it to heck!". Also, bonus, you get to beat the hell out of them.

Not touching the ass and boob shot bit. That kind of pointlessness seems to be par for the course with comics and comic derived material.

Although I'm not condoning the boob shots and what have you, I see it like this. They're bad guys. They're supposed to make you want to bash their face in and beat them to a bloody pulp. I think it would be kind of weird to hear them talking proper and not slandering women, children, and all around kicking puppies in general.

The depiction of the women themselves is another thing, but I haven't played the game, so I dunno how it is.

It really shouldn't bother or even surprise me, but games have been progressing from oversexualizing women, and this just seemed kind of like a step back. Gears of War 3 pulled off ladies way better than Batman did. It really doesn't help that even the reporters or nurses seem to also pointlessly dress scantily.

I hear a lot of comments about how it's not unusual for thugs to be misogynist and say horrible things about women, but from what I've heard this game is pretty brutal and gratuitous about it. I still want to play it but I'm not surprised that this would bother a lot of women (and I don't think anyone SHOULD be surprised that it would either)

Wow. I wasn't expecting so many of the comments to be shrugging this off as 'just how criminals talk' or 'do you want them to be nice or something'.

If Batman is fighting a thug, the thug might threaten to break Batman's legs.

If Catwoman is fighting a thug, the thug might threaten to break Catwoman's legs.

I think that gets the message across that the thug is smack talking and not about to offer to braid someone's hair. He's not being 'nice' and 'out of character' just because he doesn't feel the need to add another comment about how much he wants to rape Catwoman.

At this point, I don't care if the thugs use the word "bitch" like their tongue will fall off if they don't say it every other word. I don't even care if they feel the need to comment on how sexy Catwoman or Harley or Ivy or whoever look. But I do care that they're openly threatening sexual assault and rape, because it's skeevy as fuck. Maybe if we could just back up and not normalise that kind of shit in a game that should be just as enjoyable for women as it is for men, then we'd be making a start.

I know exactly what you mean, OP. The goons are supposed to be disgusting and unlikeable, and there are few things that make me want to break someone in half quite like sex crimes, but it's still not something I really want to be constantly reminded of while I play games in my free time. The way the women in this game are portrayed reminds me a lot of the worst aspects of Frank Miller's writing - rape rape rape and whores whores whores. Everything about them revolves around sexuality.

I don't really like all the rallying around the idea that characters being thugs or villains makes it perfectly natural for them to say lame stuff about the ladies. There used to be a time where games and comics were able to show their villains being awesomely horrible without them going into gratuitous descriptions to wanting to rape every women in the setting...

It seems like kind of lazy writing, and I've noticed it's a problem that comes a lot from new, or just flat out bad, writers have when wanting to make their stories really grim and edgy. Don't know how to make your universe actually have that edge a truly dangerous world would? Just throw in a few rape scenes or rape references! Yeah, it's THAT kind of setting. Ugh.

A lot of these comments are surprising the hell out of me. Bad guys = pure evil incarnate? Why doesn't fandom know that there's a scale? That not every thug is a rapist, or that every criminal beats children or whatever? This is the most I've ever seen fandomsecrets ignore misogyny.

For all of the people who are saying that, well, they're thugs, what do you expect? I have two things to say to that.

1) Sexism is not, in most cases, what's making them bad guys. The sexism is window dressing, and it's unnecessary. I don't think anyone's expecting these guys to be respectful of women. They just find it gratuitous and uncomfortable. What's more, some of us get tired of sexism being appropriated as a quick and easy way to show people are ~bad~ or make a title ~edgy~ It's cheap, and it's frustrating. It rarely actually adds anything to the game, it's not an issue the game's writers are actually going to engage, and pretty much all of these characters would be just as effectively bad without the sexism.

2) This is fun and escapism. For some women--not all, but some--getting smacked in the face by misogyny ruins the escapism. Even if it were realistic for thug types (which is kind of an issue that could stand to be unpacked on its own), that doesn't make it fun for a lot of us. I can think of more than one game I've gone to play for fun, and then oh look, sexual harassment in the game. Because that's really what I'm looking for when I want to destress. On the other hand... I really doubt there are too many people whose experiences are actually being enhanced by some random rape comments.

The Catwoman missions are awesome, and my ship goggles were freaking glued to my face during the Catwoman/Poison Ivy scene with the vines...did you see the vines? 100% legit femslash material right there. If there isn't fic I will be sorely disappointed.

But I was deeply tempted to put the fucking TV on mute every single time I had to fight someone as Catwoman. The stupid thugs were afraid of Batman. "It's the Bat! Run!" "He's here!" Catwoman kicked their asses, hardcore. Why couldn't they have been afraid of her? And Harley, because OMG, Harley is a freaking psychotic murderer for crying out loud. Even a little afraid would have been nice.

I think what I like least about it, though, is people's reactions online. It's really not okay that the writers scripted in 1001 comments about raping about Harley and Catwoman into the game. Not even if it's bad guys saying it. It's gendered, and overwhelmingly so.

game is still awesome, just intensely problematic in regards to misogyny. I'm hoping for DLC that will reduce the amount of misogyny comments to being, like, 1:5, or even 1:20. That would be really nice.

Yes, the rampant douchebaggery among the inmates is, well, rampant. And then I compare/contrasted to every thug, repeat inmate, and assclown muscle-for-hire I've ever met (a distressingly large number) and, yeah, they're, uh, they're not nice people. They are, in fact, douchebags, and Arkham City actually did a pretty good job catching that.

No, it's not necessary for a game about prison inmates to have it, but you know, it makes me just that much more willing to introduce them to a Freeze Grenade.

You know what's bad, though? I work with dudes who, like me, play games and were especially looking forward to Arkham City. (I haven't gotten it yet, nooooo low bank account!) And when they revealed Harley and Selina's costumes and everything, I mentioned the issue of having to constantly have tits shoved in my face, and the response I got? "Well, it's really a guy thing/game, you wouldn't understand."

I know I'm switching Selina's skin as soon as I can, though. I love those two costumes anyway. (I adore the one she wears too, but I prefer it zipped up-- you know, for sneaking around and not being seen??)
