In my experience, more often than not, people who don't have English as their first language are more careful about writing in it than people who do, so they don't make as many stupid mistakes about spelling and grammar in the first place.

People who really don't have English as their first language are also usually consistent with how they use it differently (capitalizing nouns, unusual sentence structures, strange idioms or phrases or slang, etc.), so I can usually tell by their writing, even if they didn't tell me in advance.

I try only to yell at the people that I think are using incorrect English because they just don't care, instead of people who have English as a second/third language. Then, when they tell me they're ESL, I check their profile, and more often than not they're lying to shame me, because they think I'm a horrible mean person for trying to make them care about their own language.

If they really are ESL, I usually apologize and try to help them out.
