I've been there, yo. I was trying to explain to one of my irl geek friends that I couldn't see myself dating another geek and she was like OMG YOU'RE LIMITING YOUR OPTIONS, MY BOYFRIEND IS A GEEK AND HE'S THE BESTEST. And then I hung out with them together and I felt so uncomfortable, they were like, repeating their favorite memes out loud in public and screaming about weepingcock and just generally gave the impression that they couldn't wait to get back to the internet instead of actually interacting with me.

which is EXACTLY WHY I can't see myself dating another geek- my internet life and my real life are totally separate. If I'm dating somebody, it should be because when I'm with them I don't want to be doing anything else, not because we have cat macro injokes or whatever.

tl;dr- I swear there are some self-aware nice and interesting geeks, it's just that the loudest ones are the easiest to spot. My favorite kind of people are the kinds with loads of eclectic interests, anyway.

Really? Because I can't see myself dating a non-geek. A lot of my interests (though varied) are either geeky in some way or other, or things that most "typical" guys wouldn't be interested in (baking, sewing, etc.), so I don't know what I'd talk about with a "normal" guy. I want to be able to share my interests and activities with the person I'm dating, not have to hide or feel self-conscious about some of them. Besides, dating a geek is the easiest way to find a guy who's not interested in sports, which is a definite plus.

Besides, you can only talk about politics and religion for so long before it gets depressing.

Yeah- see for me, at least half of the things I consider myself to be a geek about are "mainstream" enough that I could (and have) had conversations about with non geeks. I don't necessarily mean I wouldn't date someone who didn't have any of those interests, just somebody who wasn't, for lack of a better word, fannish about them. I'm probably explaining myself somewhat poorly, haha. Like I talk about theater stuff constantly, but since I know lots of other theater people, we can have theater conversations that are interesting but that are very separate from me going online and being like 'I SHIP EVERYTHING' for example.

Ugh, it gets better. My other half (husband actually now!) is a geek. We both are. And we actually function in society, shock horror. You can have both the cake and eat it too.

Example: On the way back from a pool hall, fairly sloshed, the two of us (and a couple of mates) were pulling into a driveway and saw a double rainbow.

Without batting an eye all five of us in the car screamed "WHAT DOES IT MEAAAAAAAAN??" at the same time :D

And then we went in and ordered pizza and went back to do doing normal things :P
