I don't find the advice to have "nerd" night with these type of friends to be all that helpful. Because chances are that if you find their behavior in public embarassing and annoying, you'll discover that behavior in private is just as embarassing and annoying. It's only funny and entertaining for so long, you know.
I think it's better to find friends that you relate to in different levels and not just your geekery. That one thing doesn't define you and it shouldn't define the type of friends you hang out with.
