1. I believe you. :\ God, I can't even imagine. I'm sorry.

5. Yeah. No kidding. My own original writing has sooo fallen by the wayside in my love of fandom. Fanfiction... actually gets read. :\

8. I like Heero/Quatre and Trowa/Quatre, personally, and I am far from anti-slash. Far from it. But _I hate 1x2._ I like 1xR, even if it's not my favorite pairing for either of them. It seems to me like 1x2 steamrolled over that whole fandom -- when in fact, Heero and Duo spend far more time with other pilots than with each other, and don't have much chemistry in my opinion. But it's not like it matters anymore... It's become such a megalith that no one in that fandom has actually seen the show anyway.

21. *hug*

30. It only got bad when they started making up crack that didn't even fit its own canon. WTF are you ripping that tiny philosophical vampire girl off of Anne Rice -- when everything she says proves a total lie everything the series stands for? What?

And I prefer it most of the time, but the manga is just on crack, man. The Nazis vs the KKK vs Alucard. (Guess who wins?!)

when in fact, Heero and Duo spend far more time with other pilots than with each other

That's always what I thought about it. I think Heero and Duo had maybe three scenes together, and they were short. So I really just fail to see it. D: ♥ for you

Heero spends way more time with Trowa, more time with Quatre, and at least more meaningful interaction with Wufei -- I can't remember if he spent more time with him. I remember Duo most clearly being on his own and spending time with Hilde and Quatre.

I don't know -- there's a lot of art where they're draping all over each other for some reason, it's true. I'm sure they become friends. But the pairing just comes out of nowhere for me. It's just the penultimate of self-fulfilling prophecy. Everyone writes it, so new fans read it and like it and they write it, and no one actually watches the original and thinks about it anew. :\

Re: 8

[identity profile] some-kat.livejournal.com 2007-06-28 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
There is, the artwork I mean. I think part of that might be because Heero was the first pilot Duo met other than himself. But it's still not enough to build a relationship on. They've still got to spend time together and all that jazz, which just doesn't happen in the series.

That always does squick me, people taking fanfiction for canon without even bothering with the original series. Or, people who read fanfiction first, then watch the original series. But I'll shut up now before I go on about that.

Re: 8

There's nothing about it in a series -- and I'm normally all for weird pairings, I mean, I like as a pairing some characters who've never met. But there's got to be some... moderation, if you ask me. A pairing can be popular or it can be random, but if it's both, it's kind of like, "What are all of you doing shipping this so devotedly?"

I was just talking about it with a friend. My personal resistance (besides the huge surge of popularity over such an unfounded pairing) is that I feel like they don't jive -- Heero is the kind of emotional stunted where he needs patience and care to coax him into any sort of real reaction, and Duo in my head gets kind of frustrated by his lack of reaction before he could approach that point. He needs a reason to put that much effort into something and "maybe we'd be friends" isn't quite enough.

Why does so much of fandom make me cry? I can't stand it, gah. You'd think GW didn't have way, way too much plot from the way these clueless fic-fangirls write.

30 - WORD. I never feel bad about writing AU Hellsing because it's so obvious Hirano is on crack himself.

He really is! I'm sure you can pick and mix your canons and only fans would notice, I'm sure he'd like it. Me, I like taking the part of the anime where Alucard stalks the girl who looks like Integra and then sucks her blood while Integra is right there and staring, until she finally stalks off in inexplicable agitation. Mmm.

Aha, I know what you mean. Though mind you, while she's definitely stalking off in explicable agitation, she does it with cool dignity. But I think one of my favorite parts is when Alucard freaks out when Incognito tells him he doesn't have a master anymore.

Why's everybody hate either 1xR or 1x2? That baffles me. Then again, I seem to have the ability to morph pairings easily.

I'll admit to starting off in the Relena-hater camp, but I never actively did anything about it, other than two absolute _crap_ fanfics which killed every character's personality equally, and my opinion has definitely changed. (Also, I began life as a 2x5 supporter, not 1x2)

(I'm in the fandom and have seen the show. Honest. Own the DVDs, even.)

Re: 8

[personal profile] sincere 2007-06-28 05:48 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't hate 1x2. In fact, I actively liked it. But as I spent more and more time in the fandom, I discovered that it eclipsed all other pairings, and that hardly anyone wrote anything else. It was impossible to find anyone who wrote other pairings as religiously as everyone wrote 1x2.

And I don't even see it as plausible. As I explained above, I find it OOC for both of them (you have to admit, like 99 out of every 100 1x2 fics are "fandom" personalities and not even remotely related to canon) and both of them spend far more time with most others in the series than with each other.

The sheer magnitude of pairings for it, the way its proponents tend to either bash other pairings or ignore everyone else, and the total lack of canon backing just made me sink into distaste. It's only now, years after I've been involved with the fandom at all, that I have real dislike for the pairing -- because it's still all I hear about. :\ Consider it the bitterness of someone who would really have liked to see that kind of massive fandom effort put to better use than writing the same "outgoing Duo and stoic Heero somehow express their feelings for each other" fic over and over.

Fair enough reasoning, and I thank you for taking the time to explain it to me.

I think I'm going to have to rewatch and actively keep track of how long they spend with each other now. I don't... remember Heero and Quatre spending that much time together, although Heero and Trowa, yes. Then again, last time I watched it, I was only focusing on Wufei.

Re: 8

Thank you for listening! ^_^ I really appreciate that you didn't just dismiss it as pairing-bashing.

Heero and Quatre had (one assumes) several weeks together while they were attending Relena's school, after Quatre's bout of crazy. ...I admit to shipping them a little at this point, because of Heero's relentless hammering home of what Quatre did, and how they were still able to turn to each other afterwards. (And Quatre wasn't the only one who found it awesome that the girls at the school thought Heero was his bodyguard.)

Wufei is such love, but I'm really picky about who I pair him with. XD I like him with Duo, but my favorite pairing for him is Trowa's sister Cathrine? *dies*

Re: 8

[identity profile] daluci.livejournal.com 2007-06-28 06:02 am (UTC)(link)
::snorts:: If I dismissed it as pairing bashing, I wouldn't have been able to stomach anything anyone ever posted in the GW fandom. Besides, people have opinions. (:

Hmm. Quatre is not my favorite pilot -- not for active dislike, just no active like -- so I can admit to being a little surprised that they shared school time. Although now that I think about it, it echoes somewhere in the distance. Definitely need to rewatch.

Catherine? Truly? That's an interesting suggestion. XD!! I tend to drift toward Relena or Duo~~ Although my favorite example of Wufei/Relena is... not the best 'fic ever.

Re: 8

[personal profile] sincere 2007-06-28 06:06 am (UTC)(link)
Wufei/Relena is also a surprise favorite of mine, now that you mention it! I think they're really well-suited for each other. XD;; I'd forgotten because I came to like it by tangent with Fei/Elly from Xenogears haven't thought about it on its own merits for a while.

But the Cathrine thing. XD So random. She made him soup when he and Trowa were at her camp, and he thanked her for it in Chinese (so adorable). And later in one of the additional manga, it's been so long I forgot which one, Wufei was sent to the circus to collect Trowa for a mission, and Trowa went off to change into real clothes, leaving just the two of them. They had an awkward silence, and then Wufei said, "I wanted to thank you again -- for the terrible soup you made that one time." And Cathrine jabs a finger at him and said, "And if you don't bring my little brother home in one piece, I'll force you to eat some more of it." You go girl. XD

They fit in ways I hadn't expected before I started pairing everyone with everyone, just to see what situations would come up. Obviously I need to check out Xenogears, I keep hearing so much about it.

Ah, her soup~~ That is... an interesting dynamic that I had never actually considered. (: Thanks for opening my eyes to it!

Y’know, I chalk up fan phenomena – such as the 1xR and 1x2 debate – as fan susceptibility and immaturity.

When people first try something they’re newbs and more easily impressed upon by peers. Yaoi/shounen ai seemed to be such a growing craze (or maybe it already was a big hit by that time and I was just placed among friends who were starting to become obsessed with it) and most people I got involved with jumped on the bandwagon. Me too… don’t get me wrong, I genuinely like shounen ai, however in my initiation into it I was quite immature.

When I first watched GW, I absolutely loved the couple 1xR and was pissed at the end when they didn’t kiss – I also loved 3x4 at the time (even if just friends… they are my OTP of the series) so the gender of the people involved just didn’t matter to me as long as it was love. But then I got introduced to the wonderful world of the internet… and the fandom of 1x2. I fell in love with it right away. Not sure why, just did. But I pulled a 180 and completely started hating Relena and bashing her right and left. I did many other… er… humiliating things in my immaturity (i.e. gah-gah over whimpy-uke-“little one”-Quatre), but I was young, impressionable n00b… I hadn’t enough time to really think things over, break away, and form my own opinion.

With experience – and a chance to be by myself (I ended up moving away from my friends, and while I still stayed in close touch with them I had so much more freedom to enjoy and love my own things without being infected by other people’s opinions) – I began to develop my own beliefs, interpretations, and preferences. My opinions began branching away from my friends.

I’m still impressionable – that’s my personality – and I probably still have immature whims. I wouldn’t be surprised if later on down the line I become just as embarrassed or shamed of something/someone I like now as I am now of back then. But in the end, it’s just me growing up and changing. I’ve been an anime fan of 11 years, and it shows. And it’s whimsical even while being embarrassing.

So, honestly, newbies and fandom immaturity don’t really bother me. I’m of the belief that everyone takes things at his/her own pace and will grow and change with time. I can put up with it. And if it does begin to bother me, I just ignore it or leave (before I go and say or do something I shouldn’t). What would piss me off though is if someone never changes. If he or she is so stagnant in his/her quagmire of stubbornness… constantly closeminded and unwilling to try new things. I haven’t personally met someone like that yet… doesn’t mean people like that don’t exist, I just haven’t met one.

I guess if there’s anything that bothers me about 1x2, it’s that it has such a HUMONGINORMOUS fanbase, and it completely overshadows my 3x4. Finding good 3x4 fanfics/merchandise is like trying to play golf in the desert (not that I’ve ever done that… but I can only imagine the frustration playing in big sandtrap)… I went to an anime con, and even though the booth probably had over 100 GW yaoi dj, I couldn’t find a single one of 3x4. 1x2 really frustrated me at that point.

I’m much more open about pairings now. I can read and enjoy almost any pairing in GW, though they generally tend to revolve around Duo and Quatre. It’s easier to read a story that includes either/both of my favorite charas.

[identity profile] daluci.livejournal.com 2007-06-28 04:02 pm (UTC)(link)
You just expressed quite a few of my opinions in words much better than I would have ever found. ♥

I quite agree on the lack of findable 3x4 -- and I've discussed this with other members of the GW fandom in the past, actually.

And yes, being stuck in one place as far as views go is terrible. Stagnation is perhaps the worst thing a person can do when it comes to fandom, in my opinion.
