Me too.

I found a lot of the other characters really annoying (yes, even Angel- I mean, he kills a dog for cash for fuck's sake! There was no reason for that, not at all.) And the other characters just seemed kind of pretentious, I didn't like them much.

ugh, yes @ Angel and the dog. When I watched it, I was just like...okay? Am I supposed to like you for this? Fight the power by killing people's pets? idgi. The way that the other characters seemed super amused by it rubbed me the wrong way as well.

Agreed. Completely, I've found such universal love for this musical I thought I was the only one who was profoundly unimpressed with both it and the characters.

Nope, you definitely aren't alone. I mean, I like the music well enough- some of it. "Seasons of Love" if absolutely gorgeous IMHO, and La Boheme is just kind of fun in a weird twisted way, but... I don't like the plot, and I don't like the characters. >:I

I liked RENT a lot overall, and even liked Angel as a character quite a bit, but ugh the whole thing with him killing Evita seriously bothered me. Okay, you needed money, that's great, but uh. "bawww my neighbor has a yappy dog" is not a valid reason to hire someone to kill the poor animal, and that's not a job that you should accept, let alone being proud of accepting it. Ugh. What the fuck.

I remember when I had heard it the first time, I kept thinking "please say the dog lives" and such things - denial or something, I guess (or big hope?). I really enjoy RENT & Angel, but that one thing there is a big no for me.

He was a great character overall, but just. Ugh. The poor dog was a living creature. Having it killed over lack of sleep was really disgusting. Though imo the asshat who hired him to do it is even more to blame. There were so many options. Move out. Harass the owner until she moves out. Complain to the management and get the owner evicted. But hiring a hitman? What? I think I more blame Angel for being proud of himself for it rather than just doing it. He needed money, yeah. I could see why he'd choose to take the job. But being so proud about it afterward? Ew.

...Also I just realized after typing all that; it's been forever since I've seen RENT, so I forget; was Angel supposed to be referred as "she"? If so, then I apologize for all of the incorrect pronouns.

I remember being kind of confused about that too, because half of the time the other characters call Angel "he" and the other half they call Angel "she". I usually go with female pronouns though, since that's I've seen many other people use

I agree. In my head, I had imagined that the dog managed to survive and someone took them in and the dog lived happily somewhere else.

And so much to the one that did the hiring. I mean, there are complaints and things that you could do -- but so much agreed. But yeah, the fact that Angel was proud of that...

Well, when I had first seen it, I was all, "Ok so Angel CLAIMED to have done that, just to get the money and whatever, but really Angel just saved the dog so that it could live happily somewhere else..."

I kept waiting for that to be the case, because I'm a pathetically, unrealistic hopeful person like that.

In fact, far as I'm concerned, that's what really happened and that's why Angel is proud >.>

That's an excellent question, because I'm nearly 100% positive that, at least in the movie, that Angel is referred to as both "he" and "she" throughout the movie and is never corrected or stated which is accurate

I know, right? I mean, I get that maybe having a lonely dog in NYC isn't the best idea. (And not just in NYC, but in any city, especially when people are working all the time, and they get lonely), but...

That part always makes me so sad... I used to have an akita, but she wasn't a yappy thing... probably because my stepmother had multiple sclerosis and was always home, so she was never lonely.

That really bothered me too. I always felt really sad at the part where Benny talks about how his poor wife was mourning the dog (while the other characters snicker in the background), even though I know it was supposed to be a lighthearted moment

I mean, I'm not even remembering any hints that their marriage had issues, or that she hated him or vice versa. (Unless the rumor I've heard is true that Benny was the one who hired Angel... Of course, maybe that's not a rumor, and more what actually happened, and I just don't remember...)
