I probably would have too. :-/

[identity profile] sandvich.livejournal.com 2011-10-29 07:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I probably would have too, because A) I'd like the studio and the not-paying rent thing and B) I really hate Over The Moon. Honestly, I love RENT a lot, but I find most of the characters' snobbiness about "selling out" pretty annoying.

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2011-10-29 07:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too.

I found a lot of the other characters really annoying (yes, even Angel- I mean, he kills a dog for cash for fuck's sake! There was no reason for that, not at all.) And the other characters just seemed kind of pretentious, I didn't like them much.

[identity profile] sandvich.livejournal.com 2011-10-29 07:38 pm (UTC)(link)
ugh, yes @ Angel and the dog. When I watched it, I was just like...okay? Am I supposed to like you for this? Fight the power by killing people's pets? idgi. The way that the other characters seemed super amused by it rubbed me the wrong way as well.

[identity profile] marumae.livejournal.com 2011-10-29 07:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. Completely, I've found such universal love for this musical I thought I was the only one who was profoundly unimpressed with both it and the characters.

I liked RENT a lot overall, and even liked Angel as a character quite a bit, but ugh the whole thing with him killing Evita seriously bothered me. Okay, you needed money, that's great, but uh. "bawww my neighbor has a yappy dog" is not a valid reason to hire someone to kill the poor animal, and that's not a job that you should accept, let alone being proud of accepting it. Ugh. What the fuck.

Poor Evita. All she liked to do was be a normal chatty dog and she was just lonely.

This is an Akita Inu. They're like Shiba Inu, only larger. I hope you all enjoy your daily dose of cute.

That really bothered me too. I always felt really sad at the part where Benny talks about how his poor wife was mourning the dog (while the other characters snicker in the background), even though I know it was supposed to be a lighthearted moment

...Please tell me they aren't all this terrible.

I love Rent. I've seen it a ton of times. I can't even begin to express the ways this show has changed my life.

However, I completely agree. If I were them, I would stopped the protest and taken the free rent. And I've always had an issue with the way Mark and Roger look down on Benny for... I don't know, actually wanting to be successful at what he does? He WANTS to help them. Not that Benny doesn't have asshole moments, but that's not one of them.

[identity profile] flipthefrog.livejournal.com 2011-10-29 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the thing about Benny wasn't that he wouldn't let them live rent-free, but that he was being a douche about it. He springs an entire year of rent on Mark and Roger all at once, going back on a deal that they made between friends. I agree that the "selling out" thing is bullshit, though, he's clearly trying to make his (and his friends! didn't he offer them the use of the studio, or am I making that up?) lives better and allow them to make a living doing what they love. I just have a problem with the way he went about it.

Also Maureen can go fuck right off, she is the essential Manic Pixie Dream Girl and acts like a fucking hipster sociopath.

[identity profile] resounding-echo.livejournal.com 2011-10-29 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
He did have a point. His aim was community enrichment. However, it did come at a heavy cost. Lots of people would be displaced, which is to say, it wouldn't help the entire community.

Made worse by the fact that he came from the community he was trying to gentrify.

[identity profile] time-ambassador.livejournal.com 2011-10-29 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Poor Rent. Love most of the songs, hate the plot.

I mean...the opening song is about how they're living in an apartment but they don't want to have to pay rent, or even the rent they owed LAST year that's totally late. It's like...WHAT? You can't live somewhere and not pay the rent and then act like the person trying to make you pay it is a terrible awful dick!

(Anonymous) 2011-10-29 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I actually remember a secret from a while back (like, a year ago at least) that echoed the same sentiment, so at least you weren't the only one to think that while watching it

Other than that I don't really have anything to add except, unf that picture. That man is stupidly, stupidly attractive. Mr. Diggs, you are the only reason I watch Private Practice

[identity profile] marshwiggledyke.livejournal.com 2011-10-29 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd be in that studio faster than you could say 'Moo.'

[identity profile] wldcatsprstr-14.livejournal.com 2011-10-29 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree. Kinda.

I don't think he should have been like "Oh BTW you have to pay a year's rent RIGHT NOW or you're getting the boot." He should have been decent enough to give them more notice, maybe set up resources for people to find employment since he knows how many poor people would be displaced. He kinda brought the protest on himself by doing that.

But (in general) I think that people wanting to live somewhere without paying ANY rent and turning on someone who has been so nice to them is really crappy.

I hate the idea of "selling out". As though making money for what you do is the most horrible thing in the world?

That being said, Benny was being a real asshole about it. If one of my friends had done that to me, I probably would've said 'no' out of sheer spite rather than any moral principles. You suddenly ask me for a year's worth of rent after making a deal that I'd never have to pay rent, and then you want me to do a favor for you? GTFO, asshole!

[identity profile] carey-pontmercy.livejournal.com 2011-10-29 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
My problem with Rent is that, even though the protagonists have legitimate grievances with Benny about springing all the rent on them at once and displacing people from their homes, they talk way more about how he's sold out and how they're so much more authenic than he is. Look at "Over the Moon." Aside from being an incoherent mess that uses nursery rhyme imagery with all the finesse of a generic low-budget horror movie, it barely mentions the people who are going to lose their homes. Instead, it's all, "Benny's a yuppie and blah blah blah Diet Coke blah blah technology blah."

I mean, I go to American Apparel and laugh inwardly at the clothes sometimes, but I don't try to pass it off as a political cause.

[identity profile] mspotamus.livejournal.com 2011-10-30 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
uh, guys? you do all know that jonathan larson wrote Rent to be poking fun at himself and his friends, right? it's all tongue-in-cheek and self-mocking. it's supposed to be pretentious and ridiculous. that's the point.

Psssh, Benny's the most unpretentious character in that play. Aside from the complete homeless people hatred, I found myself relating more to him than any of the others.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-31 11:38 am (UTC)(link)
I find the protagonists of rent so unlikable I'm glad so many of them had aids in a time that meant they died.

The world could do without them.
