You know, I never really got a pro-life message from this movie when I watched it. I had to have someone point it out later and it was like "What are you talking ab-OH." I'm pretty thick I suppose.

But when I was watching it it didn't feel like I was being beaten over the head with it. I just thought that it wasn't about keeping the baby because MURDER, but because that's what Juno wanted to do. She chose it as the best and most comfortable path for her. Ex) I wouldn't give a crap if my fetus had fingernails but it bothered her, so it's her right to keep and then give the baby away. I don't know. I never got that pro-life impression but I can see where others would.

But the movie is pretty hipstery and that can get a little annoying, yeah. I still thought it was pretty funny though, and I thought it was rather sweet to boot.

I didn't really feel that Juno was "pro-life propaganda"... I mean, I'm firmly pro-choice, and I thought that the movie made it pretty clear that Juno chose to carry the baby, and I didn't really feel like the movie was trying to judge anyone who chooses to have an abortion, especially when the stepmother brought it up as an option.

You feel how you feel OP and you like/hate what you like/hate, but this made me LOL:

STUPID cheeky character that ruined Ellen Page for me

Like she plays any other kind of character? And I say this as a fan, but...yeah.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-31 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
er, Juno didn't have a pro life message at all (granted many pro-life groups seem to think it does. But they also think Horton Hears a Who was pro life, when it was actually about American occupation in post world war II japan so lol)

Even both Ellen Page and Diablo Cody said they thought it was a little weird (I believe Page said "absurd") to call it pro-life. The point was that the choice was there, and she chose to continue the pregnancy (also, that abortion protester was portrayed as being totally ridiculous, so it's not like they were trying to show pro-lifers in a great light)

Wow, you weren't kidding about how much you hate it, OP. I can't really identity with not being to hate on it in public because your friend hates it, though. All my Twilight-loving friends know I hate the franchise and they're not pissed at me for it, anymore than I'm pissed at them for liking it - hell, my hatred for it is a running joke amongst us. If you think your friend would take it personally if they knew, then wouldn't it be easy just to never bring it up in conversation, or to change the subject if it does come up? I mean, does it even come up in conversation that often? It's not a particularly new movie and there's no sequel planned.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-31 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I understand and agree with most of these complaints, but I enjoyed it anyway. Despite the hipster dialogue that was way over the top, I thought it was entertaining to watch. Juno's ~*~quirkiness~*~ was overdone and I can see how it would bother people.

But it also came out while I was pregnant at 17 with the baby I gave up for adoption, and it was nice to have something tell me that it was okay, instead of the 'wow you're a slut and also don't love your baby!' that I was getting used to. So I get that my enjoyment of it is totally projecting/situational, but I liked it.

I never noticed it being particularly pro-life.

[identity profile] whisperwords.livejournal.com 2011-10-31 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
My trouble with the movie is that it's a one-watch movie. The jokes and "clever" dialogue are only interesting the first time around and then after that it's just Ellen Page acting circles around everyone else in the movie. I enjoyed the movie the first time I watched it and then in any attempts to try to rewatch it, I have only found myself bored.

I agree with OP mostly but... not with regard to the supposed pro-life message. It was Juno's choice not to get the abortion, and I thought that her concerns and fears in the clinic scene were very well-done. And considering the portrayal of the pro-life protester outside of the clinic I think that Diablo Cody's views on the matter are pretty clear.

i did like this movie because of the way juno's choice to keep the baby was presented. it didn't feel like an oppressively pro-life stance to me, but maybe that's just me

mostly i didn't like juno because of all the ridiculous similarities to a korean movie i'd seen earlier called jenny, juno. some people get really worked up about the ~plagiarism~ and stuff, but diablo cody's reaction just rubbed me the wrong way

LOLOL this is so relevant to my life right now because my film class filmed a scene in class today and it was my turn to act so I was Juno. True story. Today I had to talk about how I wasn't sure that the pregnancy test was seasoned yet.

I never really get a pro-life message; to be honest it felt a lot like how a teenager would really deal with pregnancy. Go to planned parenthood, "oh shit there's fingernails on it already?" and not go through with it. Plus, a film like this kind of HAS to have that moment... otherwise the film would be "abortion: the movie." Which would probably be REALLY interesting, but. She considered an abortion, but decided that the best option was for her to keep the baby and give it up for adoption. I wouldn't say that's pro-life.

Watch Ellen Page in other things? I actually kind of prefer her character Bliss in the VERY VERY underrated movie Whip It, she was amazing in Hard Candy, and I'm an Ariadne (Inception) fangirl. I haven't seen Super but I've heard good things. Hell, even her narration for The Vanishing of the Bees was kick ass.

[identity profile] ninety6tears.livejournal.com 2011-11-01 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
I was pretty disappointed in this movie until it got to the part where they cry together and then I sorta cried and I thought it was alright. It's definitely not pro-life propaganda, though, jeez.

god this movie is such a piece of shit.

i don't hate it nearly as much as i hate napoleon dynamite, though.

You can hate on the movie all you like, but I don't get why people can't understand: if Juno had had an abortion there would been no movie. It's not a pro-life message, it's a plot device.

[identity profile] ravenya03.livejournal.com 2011-11-01 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with most of what you say here, but I didn't really get the "pro-life" argument. She kept the baby because if she hadn't, there wouldn't have been any story.

I didn't have a problem with the pro-life message as it did show Juno choose to keep the baby. My problem was that it never showed the downside of teen pregnancy and the importance of safe sex and using protection. In the end even though she gave the baby away it only brought her and the young guy closer together so it actually looked like a good thing that she got pregnant.

[identity profile] urplesquirrel.livejournal.com 2011-11-01 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think you CAN have a movie about teen pregnancy (set in the modern day) that doesn't feel at least somewhat skewed towards pro-life. That being said, I really thought Juno did a much better job of being fair than most do.

However, I totally agree about how annoying it gets to have characters that are supposed to be "unique" not because they actually are, but because they're just a standard "quirky" character.

[identity profile] luindilwen.livejournal.com 2011-11-01 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Just because Juno doesn't have an abortion doesn't mean that the movie is full of Pro-Life Propaganda. She chooses to carry the baby, and chooses to give it up for adoption. That's a whole lot of Choice right there, if you ask me.

[identity profile] checkerblob.livejournal.com 2011-11-01 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Yesss I thought I was the only one who didn't like that movie. I only saw it recently, and I guess it's cause I didn't know much about it and I thought it would be a drama about teen pregnancy; when I saw the chick from Inception snarking with Dwight Schrute over the results of a pregnancy test I was quite confused.
The dialogue was very Still The Eighties, and I just... didn't get it. I didn't get why we were supposed to care about her tic-tac loving boyfriend, or why a high schooler, or anyone over the age of 10, would react to the word "girlfriend" being used by a married woman to mean she was a lesbian, or why anyone would buy a burger shaped phone, or any of it. It just left me scratching my head and feeling like I had missed something. I didn't even think about the pro-life aspect of it (although I agree with other commenters that that was more of a plot device than anything) I just thought it wasn't a very good movie. Meh, maybe it just went over my head.

[identity profile] hako-neko.livejournal.com 2011-11-01 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Pro-choice doesn't mean you have to go through with having an abortion. Hence the choice part. It's an option she explored but felt wasn't for her.

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2011-11-01 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. One of the worst things I've ever had the displeasure of watching. Only Scott Pilgrim even comes close in terms of shitty hipster garbage.

[identity profile] heartsyhawk.livejournal.com 2011-11-01 07:21 am (UTC)(link)
Ok, the hipstery "edginess" and "clever" dialogue? I will back you on forever. The music makes my ears threaten to leave the country and nobody talks like that even when trying to sound as pretentious as possible.

But I am afraid we are not even watching the same movie if you came away from it with a pro-life message. The only actual pro-life character in the movie was portrayed as ignorant and more than a little stupid. I think you are mistaking "pro-choice" to mean that abortion is the only choice. Juno's choice was to carry the baby and find a good home. The movie was relatively clear on that. Abortion was not treated as a shameful and awful thing, it was her first choice, but then she reconsidered. It was brought up by multiple characters and the movie could just as easily been about a hipster who got an abortion (though it would have been torn apart before it ever aired). Frankly the movie showed the option Hollywood ignores. Most shows and movies slut-shame those who do the abortion route or portray keeping the baby and living in a fantasy happily ever after. No, this movie is not realistically portrayed. But its better than if she kept the baby despite all.

And please stop posting repeat secrets. At least go for good ones not ragebait if you have nothing new.
