Somebody's been spamming the submissions post with old secrets, apparently (for what actual purpose, I'm not sure). Just give me a heads up and I'll take the repeats down.

THIS SECRET MAKES ME HAPPY. ♥ It's awful, it's so awful. And when people come along and defend it, which they do nearly all the time, it just turns out they haven't seen it for a really long time. Or they only watch the Garak episodes. Or they just mean they like the last season and you're not allowed to judge it on the SIX OTHER TEDIOUS SEASONS, that's apparently unreasonable. Or they're just LIARS WHO LIE TO THEMSELVES WITH LIES. It's a terrible thing. I am sorry you had to sit through it AND pretend to like it, that's nearly unthinkable.

I dunno, I'm rewatching it now, from the start, am getting to season four now. It's not the heights of art, but I am enjoying it.

Tastes differ...?

[personal profile] jekesta 2011-10-31 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah they do, sorry. It's just so usually you don't get to talk to people about the hate and it's so confusing talking to people with the love. I didn't really mean that NO ONE who likes it really does, I was just rambling. I'm under-slept or I would have noticed that I was out in public and put in DISCLAIMERS. And possibly not capitalised my judgementalness:) soz.

[identity profile] tonko-ni.livejournal.com 2011-11-01 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
It's okay anyway, I'm not offended, just piping up that the likers of it aren't all bonkers, really!--And I know what it's like to have people go OMG ITSSSS SSSSSO AWESOME!!1!!!one! about something and you sit there and seethe because they just won't hear that you don't like it AT ALL SO STFU KTHX.

That causes and sustains as much hate as the initial dislike, sometimes. >.>;;

[personal profile] jekesta 2011-11-01 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
No, it's really good you said something, my comment that wasn't meant to be stirring up trouble, but I can see how it might, so a chance to apologise a bit was nice:)

I actually have a flist that are kind of used to me hating EVERYTHING THEY LOVE, so I'm luckier than some people, I can generally just spew out my confusion and hatred and they kind of pass by and ignore me. But yes, in other places there is so often the thing where people just randomly assume they know what you don't like about it and then judge you for not *understanding* some deep intricacy or something as if you are a foooool. SLKhdfkwlefsdf. Yeah. That doesn't really help.

GUINAN ICON. Despite your dislike of DS9, I must conclude you are awesome.

And, it's good that your flist isn't jamming stuff down your throat :D I think the internet makes stuff like that a bit worse 'cause people become used to finding the pockets online where everyone likes what they like and so it's just terribly confounding when they're reminded it's not universal.

THANK YOU OH MY GOD. Both you and the OP. I don't think I've ever found anyone who liked other trek who was willing to admit to disliking this show. And I just--CAN'T.

::clings a little bit::

I love tng and voyager so much, and people just all pretend dsn is better and it's not, it's not even a little bit nearly as good, and people are WRONG WITH THEIR EYES.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-01 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
::clinging right back::

I'm a TOS/TNG fan, and never got to voyager because DS9 was next and I just kind of had to think--okay, so this is where I should stop, then.
jekesta: Houlihan with her hat and mask. (Locutus)

[personal profile] jekesta 2011-11-01 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that does make sense. Voyager's not as good as tng or tos (although I usually think of tos as an entirely different show anyway) but it's better than dsn by about nine million years. It has the whole ongoing story thing, and that gets dull occasionally, and it does take a while to bed down. But it has Janeway, who is constantly beautiful, amazing, hilarious and brilliant. And I do only love about half the crew, and the other half are a bit dreadful, but they're bad in an entertaining way, not in a 'kill me I am so bored' kind of way. So it's still heads and shoulders above deep space nine.

One day I'm even going to attempt Enterprise. I'm almost looking forward to it.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-01 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
I would SO much rather watch an uneven show with characters who are amazing, hilarious and brilliant than I would suffer through a perfectly plotted show with only one character I can get invested in at all. (not even one character. halfway invested in exactly two characters.)

maybe someday I'll return to voyager, then. :)

As someone who likes them all equally...

Why would people pretend that they think something is better? That makes no sense to me at all.
jekesta: Houlihan with her hat and mask. (Geordi)

[personal profile] jekesta 2011-11-01 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, you are right. I used the word 'pretend' there where I more honestly meant 'think'. I was just being flippant.

[identity profile] amarielah.livejournal.com 2011-11-01 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Ah. That makes sense. Thanks.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-01 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
It's hard to argue with people about DS9's quality. Maybe because it comes down to taste so much. Personally, I can't stand the show. But I know that it does plot very, very well, and it has character development, and it does the multi-season arc very very well. All stuff that I approve of and support--but not nearly enough to rescue the show (for me) from all the stuff I think it's doing wrong--the dialogue, the acting, the excruciatingly dull characters, the failed humor. But that stuff's harder to point to, because, as I think this thread is making clear, aesthetics ping people differently. It's easier to point to the stuff DS9 does right, because it's not aesthetic, it's structural. And I really do have to give the show kudos for that. In that sense, *I* have pretended to like the show.

But my actual experience of WATCHING THE SHOW is wanting to tear my hair out with boredom and frustration, and sometimes I don't want to talk about what the show's doing right, calmly and diplomatically. I want to rant about all the reasons I think that despite doing plot/arcs right, I STILL think the show fails overall. Feeling major sympathy for the OP, still--especially after having to calm down enough to write this.

Yes! Reasoned discussions FOR THE LOSE. You can have a million conversations about how it was very daring of star trek to sit around in space and not go anywhere, and how nice cardassian architecture is, but I basically sometimes just want to go 'it's TERRIBLE, I WANT THEM ALL TO DIE, BURN IT DOWN, WHY DOES IT NEVER END??????'

I hope the OP didn't have to watch it actually in the presence of someone loving it, and try to enjoy it. That must have been quite painful.

OP

Hurrah for Geordi love!:):):):):) He's just always awesome. And he'd totally love fanfic, because he always liked imaginary people more than real ones.

[identity profile] lexicale.livejournal.com 2011-11-01 05:33 am (UTC)(link)
I will at least come in to say that it's a show I've watched over and over again since the new movie came out. A bunch of my previously non-Trekkie friends got into Trek for the first time after that and my immediate response was "I MUST DS9 with them!! \o/"

So I've actually watched the series a few times since then, and it definitely still holds up for me as the best Trek :) And my friends loved it too!

(Anonymous) 2011-11-01 05:44 am (UTC)(link)

*points up at the OP* Or so you think?

[identity profile] lexicale.livejournal.com 2011-11-01 06:11 am (UTC)(link)
I kind of figured someone would say this XD But I cut it out of my original comment cause it was going on too long.

And no, my friends and I are all pretty opinionated and vocal about it :) I'm a huge SPN fan, and one of the people I showed DS9 to hates SPN with a fiery passion, and has no compuctions about letting me know, if I start bringing it up. So when she tells me she likes a show, she means it.

The other two folks I showed it to are much the same. One is a little more soft spoken than the rest of us, but she still wouldn't say she liked something when she didn't.

I do totally get that people are just different, and that's really super, and I am glad you didn't have to watch it with people who secretly hated it. But the film is the only thing that I think is actually EVEN WORSE than deep space nine.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-01 09:09 am (UTC)(link)
Wha? Season 7 is one of the worst seasons. People like it over the other ones?
jekesta: Houlihan with her hat and mask. (Default)

[personal profile] jekesta 2011-11-01 12:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know if they TRULY DO, or if they are mostly just confused about my dislike, and clinging to straws. No matter how far I got into rewatching dsn they were all 'oh, it's not really really good until season 4, stop judging it until you have seen season 4', 'okay, you hated that, but seasons 5 and 6 will blow you away', 'oh, but until you've seen season 7 you can't really hate it because it WILL MAGICALLY MAKE EVERYTHING BEAUTIFUL AND YOU CAN BE ONE OF US, JOIN USSSSSSSSSSSS'.

/bro-fist bump

I love my friends who love DS9, but ... I'm tired of hearing how this is the best Trek EVER.
