Don't worry, OP. I'm pretty sure most people would.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-04 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
bah, nothing wrong with recognizing and admitting your weakness. most people wouldn't

besides, it's highly unlikely you'll ever be tortured

[identity profile] helenadax.livejournal.com 2011-11-04 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Most of the people would break under torture. And tbh, I don't think it has nothing to do with cowardice, it's something else. Maybe it's more related to stubborness, I don't know. And as far as I know, people who resist torture scream, cry and beg too. It's just they don't give the info the other part wants.

I don't like when movies, books etc underplay torture. It doesn't make me think the character's a tough brave person, it just makes me feel that I'm being cheated.

[identity profile] forthefluff.livejournal.com 2011-11-04 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Fictional characters are...well, fictional. There's a lot of things they can do that the average person couldn't. I know I wouldn't withstand torture, either.

[identity profile] ninety6tears.livejournal.com 2011-11-04 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
It would hopefully maybe depend on what's at stake, but I'm pretty sure I'd break pretty fast :/
Keep in mind that in many cases characters that we see getting tortured may have some training that makes them better able to handle it.

[identity profile] rosehiptea.livejournal.com 2011-11-04 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sure it would break. It's just a good thing that it's very unlikely that I'd ever be tortured.

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2011-11-04 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Read Heinlein's Friday; it made me feel better about this same thing.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-04 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
There's a conversation in one of the Sharpe films that alludes to this, when Nairn (a spymaster) is telling Sharpe (the brave hero) why he can't tell him everything about a mission.

Nairn: Suppose he captured you? Tortured you?
Sharpe: *incredulous* Are you suggesting I'd talk, sir?
Nairn: Don't be a damned fool, Sharpe. Everyone talks on the third day.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-04 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Fictional people withstand torture because they are fictional and their capacity for torment/pain is determined by the creator. Torture is designed to break the mind and body; in reality, most people couldn't take it, which is why it's so horribly effective.

You can't really know that, though, without ever being in that kind of situation.

The threat of torture is actually better for getting information out of people than torture itself a lot of the time because evidently tons of people underestimate their ability to withstand pain.

[identity profile] eyepatchmcgee.livejournal.com 2011-11-04 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
you know I think most people "break" that's why torture works. But I also think randomly people can withstand it. But you wouldn't know until it was happening. I can say I'm a big ol baby and would probably betray any cause despite how noble my intentions work.
Dying for a cause? Maybe. Torture. PROLLY NOT

(Anonymous) 2011-11-04 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Don't worry OP, there is an old saying about torture.

"Everybody talks by the beginning the third day".

In Real Life(tm), it takes months of training and conditioning for even the toughest soldier to last even that long. Your random fictional character, probably within the first half hour if it was even halfway realistic. Except Batman.

[identity profile] countess-k.livejournal.com 2011-11-04 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
Most fictional characters never suffer the consequences of their torture afterwards. Nearly all the ones I read about would bounce back and go about their adventures like nothing ever happened. Real life is different. Experiences like that has far deeper consequences than just the initial pain. It can break you physically and mentally forever. So it's only reasonable that you would want to avoid it to protect your health and sanity.

[identity profile] gabzillaz.livejournal.com 2011-11-04 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
I'd break too. Nothing wrong with it, OP. Not everybody can stand torture.

[identity profile] cherryfission.livejournal.com 2011-11-04 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't talk under torture. I have pain and stress-induced seizures. 8D;;;; My captors would find me to be the most useless source of information ever.

[identity profile] tavalya-ra.livejournal.com 2011-11-04 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
I get this. The games I've played recently (well, combination of playing and watching the SO play because I get too freaked out) are "Portal 2" and "Bioshock". They're less fun when I allow myself to think, "If I were really in Aperture/Rapture, I'd be huddled in a corner crying while waiting for death."

Granted, I'm talking about being trapped in a world of murderous crazy, not torture, but it's the same idea.

I think most people would break instantly under torture, so don't feel bad, OP!

[identity profile] amethyst-rei.livejournal.com 2011-11-04 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
I'd do the same, don't worry. Seriously. I'd spill everything before they even STARTED torturing me and beg for mercy, too. I'm a coward, I know, but it is what it is.

I'm actually quite terrified of being tortured. When asked, most people say things like being afraid to drown, fall to death, burn to death, etc. Me? The first thing that ALWAYS comes to mind is torture. It's probably because of all those horror movies I used to watch when I was younger, but it's actually something I consider a possibility happening (even a slight one), and so I'm deathly afraid of it. It's right up there with the Apocalypse and a Zombie takeover. =/

(Anonymous) 2011-11-04 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
The first ever scene of torture I ever read about was when I was eleven. It was Animorphs, The Illusion, where Tobias is tortured.

And you know what? He cracks. He starts spouting off everything he can think of to get the torture to stop.

So while I've had the same feelings of guilt you seem to when I've thought about the same, I've always been able to comfort myself with the fact that one of my favorite characters also broke, and no one seemed to hold it against him.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-04 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
Lmao I don't think I would even last until the actual torturing part. As soon as I see someone carrying a whip or knives or whatever I'm sure I would immediately start shrieking "OH SWEET CHRIST I WILL TELL YOU EVERYTHING. I WILL GIVE YOU COORDINATES. I WILL DRAW YOU SOME FUCKING BLUEPRINTS, I DON'T EVEN CARE. PLEASEDONTHURTME"

Hopefully I will never be entrusted with any information worth getting tortured for

No shame in that, OP. It's by no means cowardly to be afraid and want to avoid that kind of pain. It's pretty rational and normal.

/finally gets to use torture icon and have it be relevant

[identity profile] june-miller.livejournal.com 2011-11-04 11:57 am (UTC)(link)
OP, most people break even before torture begins. Fiction is that, only fiction.

[identity profile] endis-ni.livejournal.com 2011-11-04 12:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure it's the SAS that simply say "everyone breaks in the end."

[identity profile] firecracker-sj.livejournal.com 2011-11-04 01:45 pm (UTC)(link)
ngl, I am pretty sure that if I ever get interrogated I'll be like the hacker dude from the first Transformers movies. The moment an agent walks into the room I am spilling all my secrets.
