Immigration is the solution.

[identity profile] zarteblume.livejournal.com 2011-11-12 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
That could work in the USA but it would be unreasonable to think every country could balance out low to nonexistent birthrates with immigration.

[identity profile] diorama23.livejournal.com 2011-11-12 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Why is it unreasonable? The only countries which have this problem are first world western countries - how is it unreasonable for first world western countries to increase immigration. It's cheaper for western coutnries to accept immigrants (even unskilled) and train them, then it is to raise children from birth and educate them.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-12 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Train them to do what? There are PLENTY of citizens of first world countries already trained and willing to work. There's just no jobs. Do you even know how many able-bodied and unemployed people are looking for work in the US? Nearly 14 MILLION.

There's no money or resources to train immigrants to work here. We can't even feed our own hungry, poor, sick, old, and unemployed, why would we import more workers when we can't employ the workers we already have to support???

[identity profile] diorama23.livejournal.com 2011-11-12 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
And it's also a quicker solution.

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2011-11-12 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Immigration is the only thing keeping the US from declining in population as it is.

But the US isn't what's causing overpopulation. India and other second world nations are the ones fueling the baby boom.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-12 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Only if they're immigrating to Utopia. The USA is in economic and social meltdown mode right now. Unless those immigrants are rich and bringing thousands of jobs or new factories with them, they aren't going to do anything here but drag the country further down the rabbit hole than it already is. We don't need more workers here, or even more doctors and scientists and physicists. We need an overhaul of how we think, consume, and live for a sustainable future. Immigration won't do a single thing to solve that.

[identity profile] diorama23.livejournal.com 2011-11-12 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
So having babies would solve this? You have an aging population and not enough workers in the younger generation to support them, the demographics are skewered, so either you have more babies (which takes time) to help that situation, or you get more immigrants from countries which have a current overpopulation problem.

The economic meltdown isn't because of the number of people, it's because your government hasn't regulated industry or taxed the rich well enough.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-12 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
You don't think luring people of color away from their country of origin with the promise of a better life (which rarely comes true these days) so they can serve to support an aging first world population sounds a little exploitative? Because it sounds to me like the person who suggested this is viewing third world populations like commodities.

[identity profile] diorama23.livejournal.com 2011-11-12 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
You don't have to lure anyone to go to the USA. Or any country which has a peaceful 'more' tolerant society. It's about accepting people who are desperate to escape persecution, and are willing to risk their lives to do so. There are millions of refugees in the world, who can't go home, and don't want to go home.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-12 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I think what some of this thread says is that you can't just take a bunch of people who've lived all their lives in societies that have broken completely down and just drop them somewhere else without the new host society suffering, and it's not unreasonable for members of that host society not to want to risk that without proper controls and safeguards in place. Unrestricted immigration is not the answer to either problem.

[identity profile] diorama23.livejournal.com 2011-11-12 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
You realise you're repeating the same propaganda that you hear from any right wing anti-immigration political party.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-13 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
you realize you have no grasp on the world, immigration, population, etc.: any of these issues, right?

you just spout the same nonsense that.. nobody really agrees with because societies that are plagued by a lack of jobs can't provide jobs for immigrants either!!!!

herp derp moron, if there's not enough jobs for the native population why do you think letting however many more people rush in from other countries will magically make jobs, or give those people a better life when they can't get work to make money?

(Anonymous) 2011-11-13 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
No, I don't realize that and I'm not against immigration. I live in a town with a very large minority population. The people who have emigrated here have enriched the community, revitalized the local economy, and just all around made my home a much more awesome place. But that foreign influx happened over a period of 40 years. The ONLY reason we all get along with very few incidents is because we (both sides) were assimilated/introduced to the other culture slowly and carefully, over time.

You know, sometimes when societies function well and long on a large scale they do so because they've made choices (good and bad) that serve their citizenry as a whole. That means that some people who are not of the same citizenry are not served and are in jeopardy, but the long-term solution to that will have to happen on their native ground, not a foreign one.

[identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com 2011-11-16 05:50 am (UTC)(link)
I'm as liberal as anyone can get, and yeah, they have a point. (And the Right in this country actually LOVES illegal immigrants - cheap labor who won't start unions for fear of deportation.)
