Does he come with his own Scissor Sisters album?

OP

(Anonymous) 2011-11-25 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, unfortunately. I don't particularly like the Scissor Sisters (or Simm's regeneration of the Master), but there they are.

People experience fandom feelings in all different ways and a lot of perfectly healthy people experience brief sensations of thinking like or looking like or being characters, but if you're constantly plagued by the Master's drumming and you wish it would stop, that's outside the realm of normal and sounds to me a little like schizophrenia. Obviously you only know yourself and look at me, I'm an anon, but I think you should seek help.

[identity profile] wldcatsprstr-14.livejournal.com 2011-11-24 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Uh oh. That's trouble, OP. Big trouble.

[identity profile] violence4.livejournal.com 2011-11-24 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
If you're saying what I think you're saying - which is that you constantly hear drumming in your head, the way the Master did and that you want it to stop - I think you should seek medical help. It sounds like that could easily be a symptom of some sort of mental illness e.g. schizophrenia or some other delusional disorder, and especially given that you say it bothers you, I'd maybe see a professional.

OP

(Anonymous) 2011-11-25 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
This is exactly why this is secret. There is mental illness in my biological family, I want no part of that. Since I know the difference between fantasy and reality, I mostly keep my mouth shut and deal.

I think if there is already a history there, it wouldn't be so bad to have yourself evaluated, OP. A lot of people associate mental illnesses with "OMG CRAAAAAAZY GARY OLDMAN" and being completely off your rocker, but there are a lot of types of illnesses and some peoples' chemicals are merely just slightly out of balance. You can have a mental illness and still know the difference between fantasy and reality.

I know you're probably worried about actually being diagnosed (if that's why you don't seek professional help) but getting help is a much better option than worrying about a stigma and slipping into something you can't get out of.

There's a bigger danger in just ignoring what could be serious warning signs.

well you...can't really choose whether you want to be mentally ill or not. Living in denial really isn't a great long term plan for things like this. Regardless, I hope things improve for you in the future

OP, please consider this: Your brain is pretty much the most important part of your body. Caring for your mental health is just as important as caring for your physical health. If any part of your body is too sick for you to function properly, you need to see the appropriate doctor. There's no shame in that.

"Since I know the difference between fantasy and reality,"

Ignore the Internet Differential Diagnoses you're getting, OP. As long as you know the difference, and the former isn't adversely affecting your life (to the point where you can't function in your daily life), eh. You're fine. If it is adversely affecting your life to the point where you can't function, then ignore this, and have a good long think about your options.

(Though I feel you on having that version of the Master in your head. I'd personally prefer the Master from "Deadly Assassin" over "Teh Sooound of TEH DRUMMMMMS," ha ha.)

TL;DR: Most people don't realize that everyone is a bit "strange" inside their own heads, when compared to societal "norms" enforced by TV/media/etc.

I'm calling troll.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-25 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
What would it be trolling for, though? It doesn't affect anyone else.

[identity profile] wynndfae.livejournal.com 2011-11-24 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not going to cry mental disorder on you, OP, and I will tell you why: I,too, hear characters as they should be inside my head, especially when working with them. I have always been hyper-imaginative, which I feel is what enables me to think of them so clearly. I feel it helps my writing or my art by having them more or less up there telling me what's what and why something would or would not work out. I enjoy their company, even if it does make me look "crazy". I've since stopped caring about that what others think in that regard.

Now, in regards to the Master's drumming, I think it's just something that is gonna come with him. I wager he's sitting up there, probably in a corner, doing the drumming motions with his fingers and in turn, it's driving you just as nuts. Unfortunately, he had to die in canon in order to stop the drumming. If you are writing fic of him, kill him. That should do it.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-25 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
That is an interesting thought. I normally don't write character death fic because I find it boring, but if it would get rid of the random cacophony I could try. Not like I'm posting this anyway.

[identity profile] wynndfae.livejournal.com 2011-11-25 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
There you go. If that doesn't work and he's still hanging about, simply tell him to knock it off and have done with it. It's your head, your world. Yes, we get invaders from time to time, but it's still our heads and our rules.

[identity profile] rivulet027.livejournal.com 2011-11-25 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Do not write fic. If you write fic for a muse you don't want they stick around. I've had Schillinger from OZ and Sabertooth from X-men try to be muses. If you don't want to write for a char then don't do it.

[identity profile] countess-k.livejournal.com 2011-11-25 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
Serious note: Did you consider the possibility you might have ADHD? "Characters voices in head" is one of the symptoms.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-27 03:33 pm (UTC)(link)
ROFLcopter is this from the DSM V that has "excess happiness disorder" listed too?

[identity profile] finmagik.livejournal.com 2011-11-25 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
ohhhh.... I have conversans with my characters in my head, but they NEVER like taking on a LIFE of their own. I'd go get that checked out.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-25 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
I'd look into some of the multiplicity/plurality comms and such around LJ and Dreamwidth. People have this sort of thing happen, and have dealt with it. It doesn't make you crazy or mentally ill. It's just a thing that happens to some people -- myself, my roommate, and some of our dearest friends included. So don't jump on the schizophrenia bandwagon too soon. Have a look at your other options for what might be going on.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-25 06:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm a writer, I have frequent experiences with 'muses' (or whatever), and I believe it's a pretty common human thing. My attitude to the whole thing is best summed up with something a friend once said: "having Harry Potter in your head is fine; believing you can spend his Gringotts gold is not". Since you seem to have a grip on this I wouldn't worry about schizophrenia or anything like that.

Have you tried asking him to go? Or ignoring him? I find that if a character is seriously disruptive to my mental equilibrium I can usually get them to STFU. On the other hand, is it possible you're enjoying his presence on some level, the way you would a scary story or intense film? If that's the case...just enjoy the ride. It'll mellow out eventually.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-26 07:15 am (UTC)(link)
This happened to me, sort of. It didn't help that my friends were super entertained every time I let slip a bit of Simm!Master internal monologue in everyday conversation, because I apparently look freakishly like John Simm and was already one of the designated Terrible People Who Make Charmingly Evil Comments in our friend group. Being a little bit evil is incredibly entertaining as long as no actual puppies or Cabinet members get gassed to death in the process, it's just that the Simm!Master who took up residence in my head was so obnoxiously persistent.

He did quiet down eventually. Although it left me with some interesting ways of framing and coping with homicidal-rage levels of stress, as in "Jesus H. tapdancing Christ I have been driving in bumper-to-bumper traffic at 80mph for the past hour and want to kill everyone on this road, I need to blast some techno or I will not be able to hear anything over the sound of the fucking war drums in my head."

[identity profile] kathkin.livejournal.com 2011-11-26 06:14 pm (UTC)(link)
K so - I've been into the mental plurality/multiplicity thing on and off and I have a lot of friends with headmates(/soulbonds/muses/etc.), and I have to say, if you're really having trouble with the drumming, it might be worth getting checked out, especially as you said there is a history of mental illness in your family.

Or alternatively (and this might actually be a better idea since headmating is perfectly healthy but idk if it's wellknown enough that it wouldn't concern a professional), do what a couple of anons upthread said and go find a plurality/multiplicity forum, you might be able to find someone who knows better about what is and is not within the bounds of 'normal' and what could be indicative of a problem. (I used to be accquainted with someone who was both schizophrenic and into mental plurality and apparently there's a world of difference.)
