I just have an image of an angle diagram wearing a little crown and proclaiming itself the king of the geometry worksheet.

Supernatural? Getting mythology wrong?

Say it ain't so!

(Okay, I know Gabriel, Michael, Raphael, and Uriel. Who are the other three and what do they do? ...actually, I can't remember what Uriel does half the time. Anyone got good links for angel mythology?)

Those are the only four I know, but different angels are considered to have different ranks/roles in different religions

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seven_Archangels

Apparently the other three are Raguel, Remiel and Saraqael. Looks like they come from the Book of Enoch which is probably why I've never heard of them.

I squinted really hard at the picture in your secret to see if it was meant to be a unit circle or something.

What's the difference between an archangle and a regular angle anyway?

This anon is clearly not a mathematician. Or someone with shame.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-24 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
It's easy as pi to discern the difference, so long as you don't go too deep into circular arguments.

Hehe, MTE

If Supernatural had been about "archangles", I might have kept watching it. Those things sound intriguing.

[identity profile] nabradia.livejournal.com 2011-11-24 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
...Archangle.

[identity profile] vaultedthewall.livejournal.com 2011-11-24 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Typo aside, when they went all shock and awe at Castiel being AN ANGEL when they'd heard his name repeated several times I finally realized (yes it took me that long) that for all that Sam and Dean do a lot of 'hunting things' they... clearly aren't really all that good at it. The research aspect of it anyway.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-24 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Certainly seems that way. I swear, once Bobby became a show regular, it was like they just pawned all their research off on him, and as a result he gave them misleading information so they'd sound like idiots.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-25 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
They hunted demons at that point, not angels, so why would they research them and have knowledge about them since it didn't affect their hunting? Dean didn't even believe in God or angels until Castiel showed up.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-25 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
That's not a typo. It's a typo if it's once. It's spelled that way both times. They actually think it's spelled that way. I find that way more offensive than this Uriel crap. (Especially since their graphic has the word spelled CORRECTLY in it. Yeesh.)

(Anonymous) 2011-11-24 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Only three archangels who are listed consistently as such are Michael, Gabriel and Raphael. All the rest? Vary greatly depending on which source text you look at. Uriel is listed often but not always. I notice your image didn't list Remiel, Raguel, Saraquel, Zarachial, Cassiel or Barachiel ... all of whom are considered archangels by various theological texts.

Nevermind the fact that the writers on SPN pulled a ridiculously obscure angel from one of Cornelius Agrippa's occult texts, but that's another gripe for another time.

I wonder why they picked Castiel, myself. Was it the angel of thursday/airs on thursday sort of 'joke' thing? Or did they just like the name, or...what?

I mean - i've got an awesome book that has so many angels in it it's ridiculous and i've probably only heard the names of six of them in any sort of mythology or whatever. So i gotta wonder how they stumbled across Castiel.

I tell you what. Those archangles are pretty acute.

Please.

[identity profile] xxxendles.livejournal.com 2011-11-24 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Ignoring the typo, who said there are SEVEN archangels?

Orthodox Christian belief is that there are seven archangels BESIDES Michael, who rules them. An early Christian text telling about prophet Hermas in Rome 100BC tells that he saw in a vision SIX archangels surrounding the Christ. The first book of Enoch describes only FOUR, and these four names repeat in Christian prophecies, though in some the fourth name differs. There are only THREE angels, Michael, Gabriel and Raphael, who are always said to be archangels, no matter the source. Coming from here, I find it logical that they used only those three.

Do some research.

I know it's been pointed out many times already, but...'archangle'? It's written on the image you chose! You still couldn't spell it right?

(Anonymous) 2011-11-24 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but that's all apocryphal, anyway. Only Michael and Gabriel are named in canon scripture. So I figure they've got wiggle room.

[identity profile] countess-k.livejournal.com 2011-11-25 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
Which religion says they are seven? If you're talking Christianity then are you talking about Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox,Protestant or Jehovah's Witnesses? Check out this article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archangel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archangel) It's not as agreed upon as you think so they took some liberties.

[identity profile] kyuusei.livejournal.com 2011-11-25 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
I wonder in what year of math do I get to deal with archangles? Because I'm practically done undergrad and all my math courses and they have yet to show up. :( /disappointed math geek

[identity profile] billybobfred0.livejournal.com 2011-11-25 06:10 am (UTC)(link)
Dude, arches don't have angles. Their roundness is kind of their defining feature.

I am still surprised Bobby had no clue what the Leviathans (that shit is right there in the bible) were or the Jersey devil.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-27 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
It's incredibly obtuse when they do that.
