I'm just upset because I think Angel and Santiago have much better onscreen chemistry and watching them together doesn't make me wanna cringe. I'm upset because Lance/Gwen has been my one unwavering OTP since the very beginning, before I even shipped Merlin/Arthur.

Seeing that reduced from "My feelings for you will never fade" to "Yea I kinda liked him a little bit once but I'm so over that" was just a slap in the face, especially when it was to further a canon ship that makes me wanna gouge out my eyes.

p.s I've never read the "original" legend so my feelings pertain strictly to the show itself.

I think it has a lot to do with the fact that Gwen only saw Lancelot once a year, whereas she sees Arthur every day. Lancelot never stuck around long enough to be a true rival for Gwen's affections IMO. And I'm not just saying that because I ship A/G; I think it could have been a lot more interesting if he had stuck around.

Yea, and I never understood why he never stayed. Just made no freaking sense. From that second time he left, you could already see all of Gwen's agency slipping away. "It's OK, Gwen. You just stand there while two guys decide what's best for you without asking you. It's cool." UGH.

I WISH he would have stuck around. It would have been so much better. And I wish they hadn't made it some enchantment BS that was the crux of The Betrayal. I wish it could have been real. The fact that it was fake even removes MORE of Gwen's agency (what little scraps she's clinging to anyway) and makes her relationships with Arthur AND Lance seem cheap.

Well, I think they technically couldn't keep him around because of Santiago's availability. But yeah. Totally agree about how it removes Gwen's agency (one of the many ways this show fails in portraying women, lol).

That's true. But then they could have had a confrontation between then in the episode where he dies. Something like "I know you still care for me but I've made my choice. You left me. Even when you knew I cared for you. Because you thought you knew what was best for me. So now I've made a choice and I'm standing by it."

That would have done exactly the same thing in terms of cementing Arthur/Gwen, and in a much more believable way because Lancelot, being the noble heart he was, would never have tried to force her hand. Lance would still be around and Arthur/Gwen would be a proper, developed canon, instead of an awful cringe-fest.

Yeah, that would have been a lot better. I don't agree about A/G being an awful cringefest, obviously, but YMMV (although I admit the past few eps have sort of diminished by A/G love).

Yeah, that's what bothered me. In the earlier seasons, I could really see the Betrayal coming, because Gwen had real chemistry with Lancelot. I actually thought for once there would be a believable, painful love triangle.
I really hated that it was forced on her artificially =/ it took the punch out of it.

I stopped watching sometime during series 2, but omg. I thought Santiago and Angel had fabulous on screen chemistry. Sad to hear that the writers decided to not do anything with it.

At first, I though it was me being indecisive "oh shipping him with Gwen.... wait that look with Merlin... oh standing and looking so good next Arthur... nice with the knights... and even the villain of the week...oh ..."

And then I understood. It was Santiago.

I agree with you. I just don't see the chemistry between Bradley and Angel but Santiago and Angel really bring (brought?) it.

Well I do ship Merlin/Arthur but I do realize it was never going to become canon. But the show really teases the ship in my opinion and that makes a lot of fans upset because they think the plot twist and taking the risk of introducing a plot like that would really be worth it.

I honestly really like the subtext (if you can even call the blatant fanservice that LOL) because they're never gonna go there and they would probably ruin it if they did (just the writers of Xena did with Gabrielle and Xena).

Merlin/Arthur remains the unsinkable ship on that show and it should stay 'non-canon.' I always say the writers write romantic relationships better when they try to just write friendships instead.

Oh wow. Maybe I just haven't been around for seasons 3 and 4 (and most of two because once I heard Rumors of Morgana not being a main, I lost all interest), but I seriously thought I was the only one who thought that Bradley and Angel didn't have chemistry. I felt like the only person who never shipped A/G. Glad to know I'm not alone.

I ship Merlin/Arthur too, but I like that they're non-canon. Just because they won't get married at the end doesn't mean I won't ship them, you know?

Seriously. Cuz you KNOW the minute they get married, Gwen will go back to being a flower arranger again. No screen time for her because her purpose will have been served (unless they need her to get kidnapped or something).
