The coda to your secret annoys me. Babs is a focal character of feminist debate in DC fandom. And the consensus of many writers - the majority from what I've seen - who've put time and thought into writing about it agree that her original story was lacking. It's largely agreed that it's her development from that past into a more nuanced hero that's the source of her appeal. That's why just about everyone outside of DC editorial thinks putting her back in the cowl is a massive backwards step.

So basically, I guess I agree with you, but with a side order of "fuck you and the high horse on which you rode in".

I love Babs but I love her as Oracle.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-20 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Disliking a female character is not about being a bad feminist, and I've personally never seen anyone who expressed a dislike for Babs being called a bad feminist for it. However, if you're announcing that you dislike a female character because you don't think she measures up to a male character (in this case, Robin) then maybe that's why the subject of feminism has been equated with your dislike.

Personally, I agree that Babs is my least favourite Batgirl. I like her in the animated series, and I enjoy her early adventures, but most of my experience with Batgirl in the comics is with either Cass of Steph. I'm more used to Babs as Oracle, and that's how I prefer her. But I have to admit, I'm a little taken aback by your reasons for disliking her as Batgirl. Cass became Batgirl during No Man's Land, a time of great need, because she wanted to fight the kind of crime she'd been raised to commit. Steph became Batgirl because Tim asked her not to be Spoiler anymore and Cass passed on the costume, and she became Spoiler because she wanted to foil her father's criminal plans. Babs became Batgirl because she wanted to fight crime, but due to her physical stature she was told she would never qualify to be a police officer, and could only hope for a desk job in law enforcement. How is Babs' reason so much worse than Cass and Steph's reasons? She was just as determined to fight crime in any way she could, the only difference is she actually tried to do so legally before turning to vigilantism.

Also, I've never read Babs as Batgirl being explicitly stated as "at Robin's level". They're both incredibly talented in their own ways, there's really no need to compare them. Hell, comparing any Batgirl to a Robin just doesn't work, because they're all so different. When it comes to fighting, there's probably no Robin that can keep up with Cass. Steph is probably the least experienced of the Batgirls and Robins (Damian may be younger, but he's literally been training since he was born). The Robins aren't crap fighters just because Cass is more skilled, and Steph isn't useless just because she has the least experience. Comparing them doesn't work, they all bring their own talents to their roles. And the same went for Barbara. She has gymnastics training, like you said, but I don't think anyone would call her on a level with Dick because nobody is at the same level as Dick. She's incredibly intelligent and has total memory recall. She was also quite a bit older than Dick when she was Batgirl (at least originally, I believe she's been deaged in the reboot) so while Dick may have had more experience crimefighting, she had more life experience. Yes, she was a librarian. She also became a politician at one point. She thinks differently to Dick, who thinks differently to Tim, who thinks differently to Steph, etc, etc.

And why does it matter that she's drop-dead gorgeous? All the Robins and Batgirls are hot.

Babs is the Batgirl I grew up with as a kid so she'll always be special in my mind, but I prefer her predecessors and her role as Oracle.

Your reasons for disliking her could be put in a more mature and thoughtful way, though.

[identity profile] intrigueing.livejournal.com 2011-12-20 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
I agree that Babs as Batgirl is boring and generic. I loved Babs as Oracle, and am really pissed that she was reverted from that fascinating, complex, compelling character to what she was way back in the frickin' Silver Age. In fact, I despise all the Silver Age masturbation that has gone on in the DC offices in the past few years. Hey idiots, "less dark and cynical" =/= the Silver Age.

(I personally adore the Silver Age in the form of a slightly tragic waft of idle nostalgia for the silly, happy, simple universe before the Crisis, not as a situation I would ever want to have canon stories take place in.)

[identity profile] dinerstate.livejournal.com 2011-12-20 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
No no, she's my least favorite Batgirl for the same reasons. That isn't to say that I dislike her completely, because I really love her as Oracle and a member of the Birds a lot more. As Batgirl she just doesn't interest me. To me, she's TOO good, just like you described.

[identity profile] captain-emily.livejournal.com 2011-12-20 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't like Babs as Batgirl either, but love her as Oracle. She is absolutely fabulous, and putting her in the chair actually gives her an interesting back story. Her past before she became a superhero was dull, and I never really understood why she became a superhero in the first place.

Cass is definitely my favorite Batgirl.

[identity profile] gabzillaz.livejournal.com 2011-12-20 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
Babs was my fist Batgirl since I got into Batman because of TaS and the 60s show. I love her as Batgirl mainly because of nostalgia.

But I'm not interested in reading about her as Batgirl. I think she outgrew the role. And I do find both Cass and Steph more interesting than her. But to be fair, she was created in the 60s, a lot of backstories back then were kinda weak.

I think she's a feminist icon more for Oracle than Batgirl

I mean I loved her as Batgirl, but I loved Cass and Steph more. Oracle was the motherfuckin' tits.

1st anon above said what I wanted to say, but...

Wasn't Dick just an acrobat? How is acrobatics more difficult than gymnastics? How?

[identity profile] hako-neko.livejournal.com 2011-12-20 10:48 am (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't mind her so much as Batgirl in the nuDCU if she had a personality. In TAS, she was peppy and fun-- and her snark as Oracle has always been a pleasure to read. Gail Simone, why you go backwards?

[identity profile] oberongeiger.livejournal.com 2011-12-20 03:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with you, secret creator. I do. Everything you said? It's all true.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-20 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not hugely fond of her a Batgirl (other than in Batgirl: Year One, which I love) but I adore her as Oracle. Honestly, it's basically only a matter of time until a writer who agrees with me takes over and she becomes Oracle again (I give it maybe 5 years, give or take?). I think the only question is whether she'll be paralysed again or before she becomes Oracle (personally I'd like to see her become Oracle because she wants to be Oracle, not because she's pushed into it, but injuries in comics often tend to be reccurring).

[identity profile] spiderstars.livejournal.com 2011-12-21 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
I was just coming here to say that Babs as batgirl really kind of leaves me cold in general except Batgirl: Year One, which was just fantastic.
