Because "a couple of episodes" is enough to judge seven seasons of a TV show?

Whatevs, OP. Just sounds like it weren't your cup of tea. And that's ok.

Depends on the show, but I generally think that if a person has given it a try to the tune of "several episodes" then they've given it a real shot. There are great shows where the first season is really rocky but it gets way better (like The Simpsons), but unless there's a really significant change then it seems like multiple episodes should be enough to judge even a long-running show.

Oh definitely. And sometimes it can just take a couple of episodes to irk someone to the point where they just throw their hands up and go "Argh! Do not want!". It was for me with True Blood.

It just irks me when someone accuses something of being overrated after a mere glimpse when surely it takes reviewing the whole thing, or a majority of it, to be able to really say that about something. Just because something isn't to your taste from the first impression doesn't mean it's not worthy of the praise others have given as they clearly got something special out of it.

I agree. There's a difference between, "Eh, this show didn't do it for me," and "Ugh, this show is overrated!"

Also, Red Dwarf icon! :D

The problem is , the other way around, if you do slog through the whole thing, the question is "why the hell did you do all of that if you didn't like it?"

You gotta be dedicated to your hate, THAT'S WHY!

[identity profile] tigerdreams.livejournal.com 2011-12-20 05:47 am (UTC)(link)
Well, that's the thing. Shrugging and saying "it just wasn't for me" is a lot less work, but it also means you have no basis for telling people who did enjoy it that they're somehow wrong for doing so. If you want to pass meaningful judgment on the show, that requires information. Simply not liking it and walking away is a lot easier.

LOL. Yeah I recently tried to get into Supernatural. First time I watched it, it was okay, for a fun popcorn show but I didn't get that emotionally attached to it like everyone said I would. I kept watching until the fourth season until I finally got bored and gave up. I don't dislike the show, there was enough to keep me watching for that long at least, I just didn't "get" what others were getting. I can't really say it's overrated because, to be honest, I've never even heard the fans call it 'TEH BEST SHOW EVAH' all that much...in fact a lot of them have admitted they watch mostly for the pretty men. Fair enough! ;)

Now the Twilight book? I read all of them until half way through Breaking Dawn where my stomach literally could not take anymore. Because I reeeeeally wanted to know what was so bad with these books before I joined in slamming them. Now that is dedication to hate (even though they do amuse me with how bad they are so silver lining and all).

Agreed. I can't think of a single TV show that changed so radically from the first few episodes that I hadn't already gotten a feel for whether I'd be interested or not by then. Maybe it got better or worse, but the opening is supposed to set the tone. For example, I only watched the first episode and a half of Veronica Mars, and it really, really turned me fiercely off, so I stopped watching. It's possible there would have been something I liked later on, but really unlikely that my visceral I HATE EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS would have turned into a THIS IS A GREAT SHOW.
