Because "a couple of episodes" is enough to judge seven seasons of a TV show?

Whatevs, OP. Just sounds like it weren't your cup of tea. And that's ok.

You're not alone. I think it's dire and I've had the misfortune of seeing more than a couple of episodes.

Nothing wrong with not liking a show. I will say, though, that early season 1...well, most of season 1, was rather...'special'. It get's better. But again, if it's just not your cup of tea, nothing wrong with that either.

[identity profile] antiva.livejournal.com 2011-12-20 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
It has a very distinct voice and atmosphere, if you don't like said atmosphere you're never going to like it, I think.

I have the same issue with Scrubs. I just can't get into it. I wish I could because people love it, but my brain just goes lolno. idk.

Season one is a piece of shit. If I'd only watched a few episodes from season one I would completely agree with you. Luckily I stuck it out and in season two it got pretty amazing. Honestly, skip season one and give the rest a chance because it's like a totally different show.

[identity profile] fauxkaren.livejournal.com 2011-12-20 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Which episodes did you watch? Because I'd seen a few episodes on TV randomly over the years (the puppet one from season 1, the season 4 episode where Spike escapes from the initiative, and "Doublemeat Palace") and I did not understand what the fuss was about.

Then I sat down, powered through season 1 and fell in love with the show in season 2.

Like with any popular show, hype can spoil it for new viewers. You hear so much about how great it is that you're expecting to be blown away instantly, but the truth is that Buffy, like any other show, needs time to grow on you. You need to let the characters grow into people you care about, which takes time. Also, if you've heard a lot about the characters and what they become (for instance, if you're watching it because you're interested in Willow's relationship with Tara) you're just going to find yourself disappointed that the characters start the series a different way to how they end up.

Eh, my mom loved it when it was one TV but it never clicked with me. It wasn't bad, though.

[identity profile] stella-down.livejournal.com 2011-12-20 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
I can't stand Joss Whedon's bizarre, rambling word-salad dialogue, and the acting was pretty unfortunate.

that said, from what I've heard, you just had to be there when it was still airing. coming in later, it just seems cheesy and outdated.

I was sorta forced into a marathon of it recently when our internet and cable accidentally got cut off, and it didn't click with me either. Maybe the early seasons didn't age well, or the premise just bored me throughout the whole thing, but I just couldn't see what what there was to gush over.

Perhaps I would have different thoughts if I watched it when it was still airing. I also think the hype, like anon mentioned, factored into my indifference as well.

[identity profile] havemy-heart.livejournal.com 2011-12-20 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
Most of S1 isn't that great, tbh. And it may not be your thing, but you shouldn't write it off after only a couple of episodes. Especially since not all eps are created equal in any of the seasons.

[identity profile] writerserenyty.livejournal.com 2011-12-20 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
I know people who vastly prefer the first few seasons of Buffy and others who vastly prefer others. It's all about preference.

It's cool to not like it, but you could maybe check out some later episodes to see if you prefer it after the first season? I personally love the first season because I have a strong appreciation/fondness for camp, but I know it's definitely not everyone's taste.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-20 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
I started watching Buffy when I was 10, and at the time she was pretty much the only fictional, female character I could relate to. And she turned out to be a pretty excellent role-model.
Anyways, I only got to watch a select few episodes, because it ran late (in my country) and my folks didn't want me to stay up late. It was only a few years later that I finally got to watch a full season of Buffy because one channel was having a Buffy marathon over the holidays. And you know what? I HATED it. I literally just sat there with my mouth hanging open and rolling my eyes every 5 minutes, then rolling my eyes some more when I learned how much praise the show had gotten.
Again, a few years passed by. The re-runs started, and I thought, why not. I might as well watch it for the lulz - only to find out I loved every moment of it.
I think I only learned to love it, because I didn't take it seriously anymore. I loved how cheesy and camp the whole thing was; and it was after that that I learned to appreciate the bits of originality that really made it different from other shows at the time.

So... I guess what I'm trying to say, is that the series isn't "superior" and "the best writing ever" when it comes to TV. But it's fun when you don't expect anything from it, and by not taking it for granted you can actually enjoy it. But it's totally cool if you don't see the appeal - I've been there, I know the feeling.

It was my best friends favorite show. I tried too but couldn't get into it. Vampires really aren't my thing.

[identity profile] courageousyouth.livejournal.com 2011-12-20 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
Personally I'd advise powering through the first season, because it's pretty weak and I think it gets much, much better after that. Also you should watch just because Rupert Giles is the biggest badass ever.

But honestly, no harm in not liking a show.

Judging ANY TV show by a couple of episodes is utterly ridiculous and in no way makes an "overrated" judgment possible, but btw: Buffy the Vampire Slayer has an absolutely godawful first season IMO. It doesn't really become good and fully embody the unique, compelling, style and themes it's famous for until mid-season 2. So if you started from the beginning...ouch.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-20 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
Not trying to change your mind here, but the beginning of Season 1 is admittedly really rough. They had no budget and were still trying to figure out how to balance tone and theme while fully expecting to be canceled at any moment. Personally, I don't think the show has a truly great episode until the S1 finale, and even there, as much as I like it, it's nowhere near as ambitious as the series gets.

It may just not be your thing, and that's cool, but trust me, fans don't rate it as they do based on the quality of the first few episodes.

[identity profile] skiota.livejournal.com 2011-12-20 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
If it's not your thing that's cool. But just so you know, the first season sucked. You have to watch it for the explanations they give, but it's only 12 episodes. They got into their grove more in season 2. If you're judging it based on the first season, then I implore you to watch more.

[identity profile] eralkfang.livejournal.com 2011-12-20 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's overrated, but I just couldn't get into it—I watched into season three and then just… kinda… forgot to watch the next episode. Don't feel alone, anon, it's not everybody's cuppa.

I think the show is very much a product of its times. If I was still in a 90s mode, where nothing including dramas was serious business, I could probably enjoy it. But I'm not in that mode of '90s drama or '90s comedy, so I don't like it. I find the characters annoying and whiny. I was have liked it before though, I know.

(I know it ran until the 2000s, but I still count it as a 90s show)

Season one is objectively mediocre. It doesn't get good imo, until mid-season two with Surprise/Innocence. If you're up to it and are willing to put in the time, it really does pay off and get excellent.

I feel this way about Firefly and Dr. Who. When people praise those shows, I always get a feeling like, 'Are we watching the same thing??'

[identity profile] santagrover.livejournal.com 2011-12-20 06:27 am (UTC)(link)
nope

(Anonymous) 2011-12-20 07:02 am (UTC)(link)
I honestly believe Buffy (and most Whedon shows) are one of those things the more you hear about the more you make up your mind whether it's something you'll enjoy or not. It gets praised so often that people who haven't seen it think that it must be an awesome show and have these high expectations for it. Then they watch it and realize it's just soapy 90s teen drama with vampires and demons. Keyword being 90s.

Yeah, it's completely overrated compared by today's standards. Personally, half of my love for the series comes from pure nostalgia. I watched the entire series with someone who hadn't seen it before last year and I can admit it's not the best show out there, but I still loved it. The person who I watched it with? They thought it was ok, but nothing really great.
