The new commenting system on LJ sucks, I think we can all agree (and all the other prospective design changes seem to be speeding it down the path of no return). Knowing LJ, it's probably not going to change no matter how much anybody complains, and as this comm is heavily based on user comments, it's probably time to consider moving. Dreamwidth is the closest to LJ's old format and has a large fandom base, and seems the best alternative for now.

So -

Other thoughts?

(As a note, I'm completely willing to either stay or move. Updating the comm is easy enough for me either way.)

ETA - It's not only about subject lines. Others have written up potential problems better than I could:

ETA 4 - http://lj-releases.livejournal.com/71858.html?thread=7952050#t7952050

ETA 2 - For those worried about possibly needing to make DW accounts to comment, if a move happens: you don't need one! OpenID will let you comment as an LJ user (in the same way Facebook users can comment on LJ).

ETA 3 - For those worried about missing updates: I can crosspost to LJ to let you know a post is up, I don't mind that (it's like a minute of extra work, no problem) - if the DW move happens though, the comments would be over there.

ETA 5 - Apparently, this is what we're getting next year.

I'm gunna come off as a horrendous bitch for saying this... but everyone always freaks out when something changes, especially on a site that's as outdated as LJ. Other than the case sensitive search (which is as dumb as fuck), none of the rest bothers me. Subject lines can be faked and posts collapsed - if people are doing trigger warnings, they can easily make a bolded first line and enter a few lines of blank space to move the bulk of the text down.

That's why the damn search couldn't find one of my icons last night! Case sensitive, really, LJ?

Eeeyup. And now I'm going to go rename my one icon that I have capitals in. I dunno why it does - I always tag things in lowercase, even on sites that allow uppercase tags. Apparently it just paid off!

Accept you're missing the point. Subject lines were always there at the top so that way, if some one was ctrl+"f"ing to find something, they'd get there easier to either avoid it or go right to it. Having the first line of a comment bolded doesn't allow for that, especially when most of the comments aren't expanded. And the comments expanding? They don't always do that.

It's lot more inconvenient than you realize. Subject lines such are heavily used in anon memes, anon fic/kink memes. Without this feature, it's easy to get lost and lose what you were looking for.

I think most people with triggers though would like to see the warnings before they open up a comment though. It's not really the same.

Aesthetically it doesn't bother me, but the lack of subject lines and this new way of looking through icons does. I'm having enough issues as it is with my laptop, loading every one of my icons is not helping.

I was against the subject line being taken away but it's probably the one of the least things I hated about the changes. I'm more irritated by the fact that they took away comment previews, parent threads and the fact that it takes at least twice as slow to load pages now, not to mention loading icons being way more bandwidth heavy now in comparison to the drop down menu. It feels like you have to jump through a fuck ton of hoops just to get the functions we've had before, when it really ought to be the opposite for people who opted for the default comment pages and didn't want to deal with all that buggy crap that comes with custom comment layouts. I feel like it's actually restricted the usability of the site for those who used the comment functions to their best advantage, especially with the specialized users/communities like RP-ers and such.
