The new commenting system on LJ sucks, I think we can all agree (and all the other prospective design changes seem to be speeding it down the path of no return). Knowing LJ, it's probably not going to change no matter how much anybody complains, and as this comm is heavily based on user comments, it's probably time to consider moving. Dreamwidth is the closest to LJ's old format and has a large fandom base, and seems the best alternative for now.

So -

Other thoughts?

(As a note, I'm completely willing to either stay or move. Updating the comm is easy enough for me either way.)

ETA - It's not only about subject lines. Others have written up potential problems better than I could:

ETA 4 - http://lj-releases.livejournal.com/71858.html?thread=7952050#t7952050

ETA 2 - For those worried about possibly needing to make DW accounts to comment, if a move happens: you don't need one! OpenID will let you comment as an LJ user (in the same way Facebook users can comment on LJ).

ETA 3 - For those worried about missing updates: I can crosspost to LJ to let you know a post is up, I don't mind that (it's like a minute of extra work, no problem) - if the DW move happens though, the comments would be over there.

ETA 5 - Apparently, this is what we're getting next year.

Reading comments is almost physically painful and gives me a slight headache. Everything is too bright, I can't skim (no subject lines really messed up the collapsed threads), everything is too large, too bright, and I must be lucking out on the server distribution lottery, because everyone at lj_releases and news has experienced severe lagging.

I'm crossing my fingers and hoping that there will be a switch back, or even better, a compromise to mix the old style and the new and take the best aspects of both to combine it in one awesome super functional and fast style. Which, uh, might not happen. ._. /cynicism

So I vote waiting until Saturday to see what happens. I would like to see a move, but waiting a few days will let us know livejournal's stance on the user backlash, and who knows? They might actually realize how many users they've angered and do something? Hopefully?

Reading comments is almost physically painful and gives me a slight headache.

I'm glad it's not just me. I was worrying I was being hypersensitive and/or just plain cranky.

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2011-12-21 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah, it's me as well. -_-;

[identity profile] wldcatsprstr-14.livejournal.com 2011-12-21 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah I'm right here with you.

I have a nagging one and I've only used this new comment thing about 4 times. Imagine how I would feel after a normal stint at F!S.

[identity profile] roguebelle.livejournal.com 2011-12-21 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I've barely been on at all today, but making just a few comments here and ontd_p is literally hurting my eyeballs. Too much white space combined with too-bright blues combined with what the hell was wrong with lines and borders between things? I'm looking at you, too, Google! *sigh*

[identity profile] wldcatsprstr-14.livejournal.com 2011-12-21 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously. This is such a fail. It looks like the new Facebook, which I'm desperately hoping will be an option and not required (although I know it will be required). I'll just end up using FB less than I already do when it changes and will just use DW for my LJ-type stuff.

[identity profile] roguebelle.livejournal.com 2011-12-21 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe I'm just getting old, but I swear this stuff is putting me off of social media almost entirely. I was a FB early adopter -- my school was one of the first to get access, way back when -- and nowadays I hardly use it at all. I update for my company more than for myself. I like Twitter, but only through clients, not the page itself, and it has a chaos to it that misses the community feel. I like Tumblr, though I still can't figure out why I have it -- the dashboard isn't particularly attractive, and I hate that you can't comment but have to reblog everything. I have G+ but don't like it and so don't use it. And, yeah, my LJ use has been declining for ages -- both because of LJ's problems and because so many of my friends have stopped using it. So I'll be looking into finally switching to DW -- I handle-squatted there ages ago, and might actually start using it. I love Wordpress's interface, and I think theirs are the most attractive layouts and dashboard, so I use that for my public book review blog, but... it still doesn't have the things I do like about LJ -- the ability to privatise and f-lock entries, comment threading, and communities.

*whine; sulk* I just want my lovely early 2000s LJ back.

I've noticed this too.

I don't think it's you getting old, I'm barely in my early twenties and this new trend annoys me too like you have no idea.

It's like every trendy website is competing to see who can come up with the most eye-straining, badly organized archive-and-navigation-wise layout.

Definitely with you there.

[identity profile] rtydmartel.livejournal.com 2011-12-21 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Definitely no. The change last night was jarring. I was visiting one community, and suddenly the expand option wasn't working. So I reloaded and bam! New style! Too bright! The pain! The horror!

Okay, the horror is an exaggeration. But it was painful and I had to leave the website after a few minutes.

What might help would be to turn the brightness down on your computer. I know I had to do that, and while it's awful looking at the dimmer screen, it has helped. I'm really sorry about the headache, though. :(

[identity profile] rtydmartel.livejournal.com 2011-12-21 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
It does help a little, thanks. :)

I actually used to have it with very low brightness, but that made it difficult to see some pictures and videos so I switched it back up. And it was all fine, until last night when the new release went live.

I honestly don't think I'll be able to read communities with numerous comments like this one if this style remains, I can only stand reading a handful of comments and then need to take a break.

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2011-12-21 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)

Yeah, it just looks dingy to me. :/

Me neither, I don't think. ^^;

[identity profile] wldcatsprstr-14.livejournal.com 2011-12-21 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL doesn't help me at all. I immediately dimmed when I realized I was getting a headache from the brightness but my headache has just gotten worse from squinting at the screen so much.

WTFFFF I just wanna enjoy LJ like normaaaaaaal

[identity profile] rtydmartel.livejournal.com 2011-12-21 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
It looks like you have a Plus account. If you friend fandomsecrets, there is an option to make all your friends journals look in your style.

These posts have instructions to change your style back to something resembling the old system:

This: http://tama-abi.livejournal.com/81727.html

Or failing the above, this: http://stoppedhiding.livejournal.com/1903.html

I don't know how to make the custom CSS work, since I have a Basic account and I don't know yet if I want to upgrade to Plus.

[identity profile] wldcatsprstr-14.livejournal.com 2011-12-21 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Yea but you can't friend F!S. You can only follow it. So that doesn't work for me :(

[identity profile] rtydmartel.livejournal.com 2011-12-21 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought with communities "watching" them is the same as "friending" them? I'm not sure though.

I'm sorry. :(

[identity profile] rtydmartel.livejournal.com 2011-12-21 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, okay. Even years later I still don't know many things about LJ and am only finding out about them recently. ._.

It's not the best idea, and I'm sorry it didn't work for you. ;_;

[identity profile] wldcatsprstr-14.livejournal.com 2011-12-21 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Yea, I'm just gonna have to take some painkillers and muddle through until LJ decides to get its head out of its ass.

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2011-12-22 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
I hope you feel better soon. ♥

Thanks :)

ugh seriously the old style was bad on my eyes enough but this is just straight up ridiculous

[identity profile] rtydmartel.livejournal.com 2011-12-22 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
Oh hey I just experienced that lag thing and the not being able to comment thing! I feel less left out now.
