The new commenting system on LJ sucks, I think we can all agree (and all the other prospective design changes seem to be speeding it down the path of no return). Knowing LJ, it's probably not going to change no matter how much anybody complains, and as this comm is heavily based on user comments, it's probably time to consider moving. Dreamwidth is the closest to LJ's old format and has a large fandom base, and seems the best alternative for now.

So -

Other thoughts?

(As a note, I'm completely willing to either stay or move. Updating the comm is easy enough for me either way.)

ETA - It's not only about subject lines. Others have written up potential problems better than I could:

ETA 4 - http://lj-releases.livejournal.com/71858.html?thread=7952050#t7952050

ETA 2 - For those worried about possibly needing to make DW accounts to comment, if a move happens: you don't need one! OpenID will let you comment as an LJ user (in the same way Facebook users can comment on LJ).

ETA 3 - For those worried about missing updates: I can crosspost to LJ to let you know a post is up, I don't mind that (it's like a minute of extra work, no problem) - if the DW move happens though, the comments would be over there.

ETA 5 - Apparently, this is what we're getting next year.

There is a workaround for this! I'll put the link below. Be warned that this is a thread in a kink-meme, so not necessarily sfw.

This gives the user back the subject line, etc., so it's possible the comm could be switched to this style/setting without moving.

I hate the thought of leaving lj, and am not doing it personally, but i *do* have a DW account just in case.
*sigh*

But why bother with all this extra work when we can just move to DW and absolutely nothing will be lost?

Hey, putting the suggestion out there, as a lot of people seem to be opposed to moving. I would hate to move, frankly, as a lot of the people/comms i follow don't have a DW account and i'd lose a *lot* of my friends and fandom connections. But LJ just keeps screwing up so...unless there's a work-around that *works*, moving seems to be more and more likely.

*sigh*

I have a DW account, but if half my comms don't, and don't move - and *i* move to DW, then i've lost them. So...i really want there to be a good, useful workaround so i don't have to lose friends and comms over this.

I don't mind the crossposting/comment thing, either - i'm updating my DW account right now and contemplating posting at DW and xposting to LJ from now on. We shall see.

You could allow comments on the LJ post too, it just means the comments wouldn't all be in the same place. Which isn't as fun. But could work as a transition?

[And this is my first comment with the system. Do not like.]

Besides a bunch of people who won't make the move.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-21 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
But they wouldn't have to make any kind of move. New posts would still get linked on LJ and they can comment on DW with LJ accounts. Nothing would have to change.

I tried that, but it only works with Plus, Paid and Permanent accounts, not Basic. (In other words, you have to be making LJ money if you want your subject lines back, huh.)

Ahhhh, bastards.
There's another workaround here - maybe it works with basic/free accounts? I am severely challenged when it comes to monkeying with the 'style' things.

Thank you! Unfortunately, it only changes my journal, but the posts/entries obstinately remain in the "default" style.

Bah! I'd ask around over there, maybe - people are madly working on fixes, so they might have some suggestions.

I'm in S2 style, so i'm 'safe' for now, but they say they'll be changing that soon, too. Arrgh!

For the time being, a lower brightness on my monitor has helped, and I'm currently waiting to see how LJ responds to the complaints.

Also checking out Dreamwidth -- oh my, what a handsome Terms of Service you have! Lemme check out your Privacy Policy, gorgeous~~! ♥
