The new commenting system on LJ sucks, I think we can all agree (and all the other prospective design changes seem to be speeding it down the path of no return). Knowing LJ, it's probably not going to change no matter how much anybody complains, and as this comm is heavily based on user comments, it's probably time to consider moving. Dreamwidth is the closest to LJ's old format and has a large fandom base, and seems the best alternative for now.

So -

Other thoughts?

(As a note, I'm completely willing to either stay or move. Updating the comm is easy enough for me either way.)

ETA - It's not only about subject lines. Others have written up potential problems better than I could:

ETA 4 - http://lj-releases.livejournal.com/71858.html?thread=7952050#t7952050

ETA 2 - For those worried about possibly needing to make DW accounts to comment, if a move happens: you don't need one! OpenID will let you comment as an LJ user (in the same way Facebook users can comment on LJ).

ETA 3 - For those worried about missing updates: I can crosspost to LJ to let you know a post is up, I don't mind that (it's like a minute of extra work, no problem) - if the DW move happens though, the comments would be over there.

ETA 5 - Apparently, this is what we're getting next year.

So ... you bother to click on the LJ cut to see a FS post but you wouldn't bother to click on a fake cut leading to DW? (Also, as has been pointed out a hundred times in this post, you can comment there with your LJ account.)

Seriously. All the people still bitching about having to sign up at DW make me wonder how many people honestly bother to read the whole post before commenting.

I hadn't refreshed before ETA 2 showed up. :U I don't see why everyone is bitching about having to ~leave~ LJ in the first place.

Maybe because the new format is downright unusable for a big chunk of users? That, and the fact that LJ has been consistently implementing "updates" over the last year or so that have had severely negative impacts on their userbase and have shown little care or regard for the people they're "catering" to, including those who have been paying them for years?

Does no one remember the huge security breaches that came with their last 'big' update?

Because I can't see how the format is a pain for many users, I find it hard to understand. A lot of problems people mention aren't there for me so I'm not sure what they're talking about in particular (And I don't know anything about these negative updates? LJ hasn't really changed for me but I'm not on it all the time. Just once in morning and night, so I can easily miss things)
Although I can see the lack of subject header for triggers as a pain, so I'd hope that'd come back.

The security breaches I vaguely recall, but I wasn't a big user back then.

DA

This doesn't affect me personally, but my biggest concern is that now people on phones, screenreaders, and limited bandwidth can't use either parts or all of LJ, and people with vision problems and migraine tendencies are struggling. That's unreasonable to me. I really wish they'd fix that first, because it feels like slamming a door in all those people's faces. :`(

Update: And as I was using this comment form, it told me I entered a username but selected "anonymous". But I never did enter a username - it auto-filled that for me, in a browser with auto-fill turned off.

Ignoring the fact I find DW very, very unappealing and cluttered, No I won't follow a fake cut leading to DW with yet another log in form to fill out. I normally browse FS when on my tablet and fail at the keyboard - so it would be way too much of a bother to do my usual routine than have another site to log in just to look at FS.

Have you tried reading some of the longer threads with this new style? It will take you much longer to do that than the two seconds it will take you to log into DW (which is MUCH more like LJ used to be than LJ is right now, so it's really less of a change to go there than to stay here). Or you can always comment anonymously.

[identity profile] hunter-san.livejournal.com 2011-12-21 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I've had no problem with the longer threads. It's actually expanded ~everything~ for me which the old layout never used to do. It's also easier to hit the expand option on my tablet instead of the parent/link button next to it.

I really like the new LJ setup, so returning to something like the old one is just a headache for me. I really love the "new comment" yellow thing showing up.
If FS goes it goes. But I won't follow (which is not a huge loss to the comm. I comment maybe twice an entry and have only submitted like 3 secrets. Not really a big deal)
