[Les Miserables]

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-12-24 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
I think he makes a good attempt. It's just that I think the rest of the cast is so much more better, that the difference is quite large and it shows.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-24 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
...Really? I hated their rendition One Day More. Only Javert was good there. I think the entire cast wasn't all that good.

Man, I've been trying to see this version for a while. :| I hope it's good! Thanks for the heads up, OP. ♥

I've only seen parts of the show, but I thought he did a decent job.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-24 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
But he was a Broadway actor. He was even in Les Miserable, though he played Gavorche. Of course, no one gave him shit because this was long before the Jonas Brothers existed.

I wish people would stop the sole reason of not liking someone is because they were in an "it" music band. The teens have moved on and you'll never know who actually still has talent to keep going.

This is exactly my problem with the hate he gets. His voice is very suited to the theater and stage. It's sad he's getting this much flack just because he's, well. A Jonas brother.

Give him a few years, polish his voice, and he can shine.

Also, knew he was on Broadway when he was little. Did not know he was Gavroche.

Most people seem to hate him and his performance just because a Jonas brother DARED try to do something other than the teeny-bopper music that they aren't the target audience for and want him to stay in his proper box and remain an object of mockery. Heaven forbid he try to expand beyond that role and be good at something that these people actually LIKE...

His performance wasn't my cup of tea. His voice was not up to the challenge and it showed, but, if I'm honest, he was not that much worse than the girls that played Eponine and Cosette.

The fact that he is a Jonas brother doesn't bother me. I just don't think he was that good.

He sounded better during his run on the West End than he did during the 25th.

Nick gets a lot more flack than he actually deserves. He didn't do an awful job, but yes, he was definitely outperformed. He did better with people he was comfortable around.

IA OP, with proper voice training Nick could do well in musical theatre.

I found him terrible, and I saw it more than a few times (It's Les Miz and PBS had a week-long special. I somehow only caught the second half every time). I was shocked at how bad he was, and his facial expressions and teeth were horribly distracting. It was a huge dissapointment and more than a bit of an embarassment.

Matt Lucas also disappointed me, and Jean Val Jean could have been far better. Cosette was annoying as always. The only really good singer was Javert. In general, I found it one of the worst adaptations I've ever seen.

Ehh, sorry anon, I thought he just fell flat Jonas Brother or no - when I watched it I actually didn't know it was him (I'm not well acquainted with what he looks like & I'm really really bad at identifying faces) and thought he was pretty bad. Maybe he has potential, but when I check out big shows like Les Mis, I'm looking more for someone who's solid, not someone who might be solid in a few years. In a few years, I might just agree with you - in fact, I hope I do, because it'd be wonderful to see some of the teens in his targeted group get into theatre because of him.

[identity profile] nemo-de-la-meer.livejournal.com 2011-12-24 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
He was awful, anon. He kept adapting a British accent and his voice was flat - no emotion.

You're welcome to your opinion- but if you ask me, his Empty Chairs at Empty Tables was dreadful. And it's not about comparing him to anyone else, it's about his performance itself. He was not up to the task, and that song made it glaringly obvious.

I loved him as Marius, I think he projected exactly the right persona for the role and his singing was much less annoying to me than Michael Ball in the TAC. He has some major potential.

Agh, I hate Michael Ball. Ever since the 10th anniversary version when the final "and rain" during 'A Little Fall of Rain' where he rolls his eyes to the ceiling and has the most ridiculous look on his face. My best friend and I would pause the tape and play that part over and over again just for laughs. Everything I've ever heard him in since (at least a half dozen productions I've heard) has been over the top and lacking depth.

He may not be Michael Ball, but who's to say that's a bad thing?

(Anonymous) 2011-12-24 05:19 am (UTC)(link)
I think he could be good in that venue with some years of serious training. He wasn't bad at all for seventeen, but this was supposed to be a world-class, best-of-the-best performance. He was just out of his league and, TBH, I felt sorry for him, because I got the impression he took it seriously and really was giving it his best.

I honestly didn't expect him to be Michael Ball, but I felt like any one of the barricade boys at that concert would have been better, and that's a problem.

I honestly winced when I heard his version, and that was before I even realised who he was. He was okay at parts, but he really sounded strained to me, a lot of the time. And good god he looked so constipated the whole way through.

Which can be put down to nerves, I guess. He was just so obviously not in his comfort zone and out of his league. I feel sorry for him, actually, 'cause I know I'd be absolutely shitting myself in his position.

I saw this with my parents and we all agreed- the company men with one liners? ALL outsung him. Any one of them would have been better :(

I accept he tried, and he's not a horrible singer...but compared with everyone else on that stage, he was the worst. Everyone else at least looked emotional, whilst with him you could tell he had to concentrate and think about it- you can tell he has picked a spot on the ceiling and is singing at it during his songs.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-24 11:30 am (UTC)(link)
His voice was very weak but the singing didn't bother me as much as his acting. He kept the same slightly confused facial expression for the whole concert.

[identity profile] schizophrenic0.livejournal.com 2011-12-24 02:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I know I'm late to the party, but I have to give my opinion on this:

Nick Jonas has a good voice. I will not dispute that. However, watching him in the 25th Anniversary was bothersome because he was so obviously not on the same level as the people around him. If this had been a community theatre production or a high school one, it would have been one thing, or if it had been a different musical (one more suited to a pop-style voice) it would have been perfect. But it felt so weak in comparison, especially when Michael Ball came out and totally pwned.

I do think he has talent and I give him props for trying, but overall I felt he was the weak link in this and wish they would have gone with someone who has a stronger voice.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-24 04:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry OP, but that was the absolute shittiest performance of that song I've ever heard. I've seen high school productions that blew him out of the water. He has no breath control, he's perpetually flat, no emotion, and he can't act for shit. He may have "potential," but he wasted it being a mass-produced pop idol instead of getting the kind of vocal training required for the music in Les Misérables.

And before the other anon troll starts in with "lol Michael Ball" fan, I don't even like Michael Ball. Give me Guido Balzaretti or Jérôme Pradon any day.

[identity profile] fallingxtragedy.livejournal.com 2011-12-24 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL at no-one actually reading the secret.
It says that OP thinks he needs to improve his voice control and that he is to Michael Ball as an art student is to Van Gogh, fgs.
I mean, I'm a huge Nick fan but I preferred Gareth Gates as Marius when I saw him.
(The other people I've seen as Marius all sucked, so I don't have anything else to compare them too)
He's obviously is not perfect and has a way to go in the time of broadway style but it wasn't awful.
Also I hate it when people say he was too 'whiny' to be Marius. Marius is the epitome of whiny, that's the whole point.
/endrant.

A bit late to the party here, but I just had to comment how happy I was to see Michael Ball mentioned on F!S. While I was listening to him too.
