I hate this book, tbh.

But I hate whiny, annoying, angst-centric teen books in general, so. Hell, I even READ this as a teen and hated it with the passion of a thousand suns.

Oh, God. It's not Bella whining over Edward. It's the story of someone suffering PTSD.

I really do judge people who don't get it. You don't have to like it, that's your choice. But you certainly are wrong with 'whiny, annoying, angst-centric teen book.' Sheesh.

No, in fact, Holden's whining and Bella's whining are completely different. But they're still whiny. And it WAS a whiny, annoying, angst-centric teen book. Holden is a teenager who feels angst over the realization that people become less pure when they grow up. And while the whole theme of the books is deep/insightful, he still bitches and moans about it every other page, which, to me, was annoying. Everyone was a phony, etc, etc.

Sorry if you LOVE it, but I don't. Just because I didn't like the book, doesn't mean I didn't GET it.

So much love for your last sentence.

I'm kind of the opposite of you. I thought Holden was an interesting character, but I couldn't stand the book because it had no plot - it was just him wandering around for a few days and I just didn't find that interesting. But my English teacher straight-up said that if you didn't like the book, it was because you didn't understand it. >_> Okay, maybe there were a few things I didn't catch, but there IS a such thing as different people having different interests and that has no bearing on their intelligence...

Anyway, OP, that's a tangent, but that's why I hate that book so much... my douchebag teacher's attitude about it. >.> Sorry if you've ever encountered my ranting and it hurt your feelings.

Just because I didn't like the book, doesn't mean I didn't GET it.

This. THIS. Not specifically in regards to this book, even (I rather liked Catcher in the Rye, personally) but ... this whole attitude about literature is part of the reason I am no longer an English major. Ugh.

YES, thank you.

Sometimes I think people who say "you don't GET it" are conflating "you haven't experienced this particular event or feeling" with "you're too stupid to understand it". Sometimes I end up just saying, "I understand it, but I just can't empathize/sympathize".

Different anon here.

Well, I respect that you didn't like the book, that's fine, but I would say that you didn't get it judging by what you've written above. You're not really supposed to think that Holden is some deep, insightful person. He's really a sad and rather disturbed person, and the constant repetition of him complaining about how fake the world is shows how disconnected he is from others. I like the character a lot and sympathize with him but I don't necessarily think he's right.

People like you are the worst.

Art of all kinds is open to interpretation. That's why literary criticism is such an interesting and diverse subject.

I think you are the one who doesn't get it.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-26 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha. You totally don't get it, do you?

Don't try your high school reasoning on me, dear.
