ah yes it's really important not to believe people when they say they're not straight. this is a very progressive move on your part, good for you.

I just wanted to say this comment is fantastic because it both 1) made me laugh, and 2) made an excellent point. ^_^b

+1

and well said, too

(Anonymous) 2011-12-30 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
just like it's super important not to call it out when people are fetishizing queers, too.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-30 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, explain to me how making homosexuality a part of her videos is "fetshizing queers". I don't get what people mean when they say someone is fetishizing something, whether it be handicaps or sexuality. Finding something attractive and wanting it to be part of your life is bad how?

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-12-30 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. I hate how the word is now applied to people. "gay fetish". Or "amputee fetish". No, you have fetishes for leather boots or for nurse outfits. You might have preferences for certain body type, or for certain sexual acts that are not mainstream, but that does not make it a "fetish".

(Anonymous) 2011-12-30 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
Having a preference isn't the same as fetishization, and you continue to say stupid things like, 9 out of every 10 comments you make.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-30 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
uhh, you certainly can fetishize homosexuality. just look at some of the guys who drool over lesbian porn about holler when girls make out in front of them, and then turn around and complain about "fags" and how gay marriage is evil. they don't see lesbians as people, they just see them as entertainment. you can also fetishize disabilities. there's a huge difference between having a kink for amputees, and fetishizing someone by not caring about anything else but their amputation and only seeing them for that aspect of themselves.

*and holler

This

For me, I just don't believe it from gaga, and just her. Otherwise I believe people who say they are bi. But then again, I have trouble believing anything from my-whole-persona-is-a-marketing-gimmick-gaga.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-30 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you. Regardless of the truth, the speculation causes more harm than good.

[identity profile] megalomaniageek.livejournal.com 2011-12-30 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. It seems like some people suspect that she calls herself bisexual in order to escape accusations about how she fetishizes and commoditizes the gay community, but I think it's a problem that people will only believe a person is gay/bi/queer if that person has never been publicly accused of problematic behavior. Straight appropriation of queerness is a real thing, but it seems to me like it's important on principle to believe people when they say that they're queer, because otherwise you'll be denying real and innocent people their identities on the off chance that they may be some straight asshole doing a bad thing. Why can't Gaga can still be called out on her behavior even if she is bisexual? Bi and gay people can still say and do problematic things; I've seen plenty of biphobic comments made by gay people and homophobic comments made by bisexual people.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-01 04:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Err, sorry, I'm bi and for the most part I've had really bad experiences with "bi" girls who turned out to be straight. It's not progressive either if you fake a sexual identity just to grab attention and then laugh and point at actual bi or gay girls who try to get to know you and get a date with you.
So excuse me, I will be cautious when girls openly kiss and dance sexily with other girls in clubs. Too many fakers and I'm sick of getting ridiculed.

It's a serious problem and I can totally understand when people second-guess stars like Lady Gaga. Accusing them of being non-progressive is such an asshole move. How do you know the secret poster isn't bi or gay themselves? Yeah, I have to believe everything people say to me about themselves, because protecting myself of getting hurt probably makes me a bad bisexual.
